Berlin for free – part I

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It is a fact: Berlin is still one of the top budget destinations in Europe. The German capital has a lot to offer with its touching history, diverse neighborhoods, affordable food and accommodation options. Not to mention the infinite nightlife choices. Although prices have consistently risen in the last years (especially for the locals), Berlin has a plethora of activities and attractions that are totally free of charge! So it was only natural that we dedicated some time to give you tips for enjoying Berlin for free!  In fact, there are so many free-of-charge activities that we decided to publish this article in two parts! Make sure to read them both before deciding where to spend your time! Find “Berlin for free – part II” here! Most of the places are more enjoyable in the warmer seasons, when people spend their spare time in the parks and lakes all over the city and take advantage of the late sunsets. However, in the colder months, Berlin offers plenty of nice indoor activities as well. The first and most basic thing you will need is to maintain high levels of nutrients in your body (also known as getting food). And in Berlin you [...]

Beyond pho on Oakland’s Vietnamese restaurant row

Beyond pho on Oakland’s Vietnamese restaurant row

San Francisco Chronicle

Beyond pho on Oakland’s Vietnamese restaurant row Ten years ago, pho was the throughline that linked the Vietnamese restaurants on Oakland’s International Boulevard. From 2nd Avenue to 15th Avenue, laminated menu after laminated menu listed the same variations on Vietnam’s most famous soup. Much of what you’d order was the sweeter, more aromatic Southern-style beef noodle soup, with the occasional appearance of chicken pho. Over the past decade, most of the smoky cafes and soup parlors with sticky tabletops and fluorescent lights have faded out or, in the case of the marvelous Pho Ao Sen (1139 E. 12th St.), beautified. The broth has a faint and fetching anise note, almost like a Vietnamese bouillabaisse, and the noodles are covered in meats — braised chicken, prawns, roast pork — as well as herbs, ground peanuts and stiff twists of polka-dotted rice crackers. When you sit down at this 2½- month-old place — a burgundy-walled cafe with a koi pond in the front and a card room in the back — owner Kim Thuy will bring over a basket of fresh herbs and direct you to grab a drink from the refrigerators. The bun nuoc leo ($9), a specialty of their hometown, softens the ferocity of fermented fish with lemongrass and crispy roast pork, and Mien Tay’s anise-tinged chicken curry ($8) is as sweet and delicate as a tapioca pudding. Floating over the tangle of rice noodles are crab and shrimp meatballs, broth-drunk fried tofu, and fresh red and green cabbage. At this 5-year-old cafe, bun mam ($8.50-$9.25) made in the style of Soc Trang, a province southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, is so good that competitors up and down the stretch have begun advertising it on awnings and photocopied wall signs. First-timers may freeze at the first smell of mam ca, the fermented fish paste that flavors the cola-colored broth, but its sharp odor seems to disappear by the third spoonful. [...] the banana blossoms and herbs you’ve dumped into the bowl have melted into the soup, and your attention is captured by the bun mam’s depth and delicate sweetness, not to mention all the crispy-skin roast pork, prawns and poached fish your chopsticks bring to the surface.

Berlin’s Best Christmas Markets – 2017

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

BERLIN BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS GUIDE 2017 is out! From the last weekend in November until right after Christmas the city is “inundated” with some of the most magical and enchanting Christmas markets. In fact, there are more than 60 of those throughout the city. Locals gather together to celebrate and get cozy while drinking mulled wine, beer and eating some of the most yummy German street food. Another favorite activity at Christmas Markets is, of course, shopping for hand made Christmas decorations and trinkets. Several vocal and musical groups provide for a fun entertainment program. Not all Christmas markets are alike, so it is totally worth exploring a few during the season. Some of them are more exclusive and posh. Others are very popular and feel almost like Carnival fairs. Some are located in stunning landmarks like Charlottenburg Palace, Gendarmentmarkt Square or in little old neighborhood/village centers. Others take place on city’s open spaces, old factories and squares. The past couple of years has seen a surge of “specialty” Christmas markets and they range from Greek, Japanese, Vegan, you name it. These, even if fun,  tend to feel less “Christmassy” as the traditional ones, so we decided this year to focus on the ones [...]

Pöriző brings stew in pancakes to Budapest

Hungarians just love their saucy stews, be it chicken or beef-based, as long as it is generously sprinkled with paprika. Pörkölt is a traditional dish often devoured at family dinners, but now two talented chefs came up with an extraordinary idea: pörkölt as street food, filled into savory pancakes. It may sound strange at first, but with pörkölt a mainstay of Hungary’s culinary culture, why not try it on the go?

Brewpub meets bistro at new Budapest craft-beer palace Neked Csak Dezső

The sturdy corner building where Rákóczi meets Gyulai Pál Street, in the shadow of the Baroque Chapel of Saint Roch, has long been a graveyard for new bar ventures. The wrong side of Rákóczi from the District VII bar vortex, away from the student buzz of the Palace Quarter, this location has jinxed many an ambitious pub landlord. This time, however, might be different, as the bar in question is the once cultish Neked Csak Dezső, which garnered a following from its long-term stint on nearby Dohány Street. With 32 craft beers, new-wave coffee and quality bistro food, what’s not to like?

AWESOME BERLIN

For the longest time Kanntrasse in Charlottenburg has been known as Berlin’s little “China town”. At least when it comes to food options. We have personally had great mealsin this area since we moved to Berlin and have enjoyed watching its food scene florish. We are happy to report that MADAME NGO VIETNAMESE CUISINE is a new and delicious addition to the mix. MADAME NGO VIETNAMESE CUISINE is a breath of fresh air in the traditional Vietnamese Berlin food scene. Walk along Kannstrasse just off Savigny Platz and stop when you see the giant “PHO” sign and 3 giant Pho pots through the glass window. Very inviting! The place has a casual and cool design with industrial, natural and South East Asian elements. We are particularly drawn to the somewhat sexy photographs stuck to the glass entrance doors. The menu travels between France (appetizers) and Vietnam (Mains, Small plates, Pho, Specials and Bahn Mi). It all looks very appetizing but we have to confess we always go for the Pho options. The Phở bò tái and the Phở bò Madame Ngo are our favorites. The rich and fragant broth itself is worth the trip here. Do not be shy. If you’d like more [...]

My favorite Restaurants in Berlin right now

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

First, a disclaimer: This is a list of my favorite restaurants in Berlin right now. I am sure there are a million other great restaurants that are worth a visit. My goal with this article is to give you a shortlist of where I like to eat these days. These restaurants have proven to deliver delicious food and satisfying experience, CONSISTENTLY. Yes, chefs and staff may have bad days, but I guarantee that these places have way more amazing days than otherwise. You may be disappointed, as I am not going to tell you about the *newest* restaurants in Berlin. Most of the places I am recommending have been around for a while. I catch myself going back and that, I think, is a good sign. I want to personally give you solid options that I truly love and are here to stay (I certainly hope so).  Take it as a recommendation between friends. I have also mostly selected restaurants that are not going to break your bank. They range from my trusted Turkish joint, where you can eat for 10 bucks to my favorite mid-range restaurants, where you can get an amazing dinner for around 60-70 Euros. If you [...]
