Pizzeria Roberti can be found tucked in a small corner on the east side of Orlando, off of Curry Ford and Chicksaw Trail. Here you will find one of the best pizzas in Orlando – from the crispy, tasty house-fermented crust to the house-made mozzarella cheese, Pizzeria Roberti is the real deal. Joseph Roberti, owner and chef of Pizzeria Roberti, takes a lot of pride in his work and it shows through the quality of the food here. Roberti tells us, “Our pizza on the surface is a New York Style Pizza, but underneath it is much more complex than that. In reality it is a combination of Artisan style pizza, Neapolitan style pizza, and traditional New York style pizza.” “Our dough is made from cultivated yeast produced in house similar to the production of artisan sourdough breads (Artisan characteristic). Our sauce is made from San Marzano tomatoes imported from Italy and less than a handful of all fresh ingredients (Neapolitan characteristic). We bake our pies in a traditional bakers pride pizza oven (New York characteristic), but we cook them at a high heat between 550 and 575 degrees Fahrenheit (similar to a Neapolitan characteristic). Our cheese is a combination whole milk and part-skim Grande Mozzarella (New York characteristic).” “Every ingredient of our specialty pies is produced in house. Our specialty slice pies are often garnished to order not unlike a dish coming out of a high end restaurant. And that is just the pizzas. We also have beer, wine, salads (all dressings made in house), subs, appetizers (such as our homemade fresh mozzarella), pastas (all sauces made in house), and vast catering menu. We are off to a great start in developing our concept and look forward to continually evolve as we grow. “As a kid my father used to take me to a local pizza shop a few days a week and the cooks used to teach me little things here and there. By the age of 8 or 9 I made my first slice pie. Fast forward a bit to 14, I was now living in Orlando, Fl, and about to start high school. I was looking to get started in my cooking career and I got my shot at a neighborhood pizzeria & bar. I started as a prep cook, then learned the hot line, then pizza station, and even serving from time to time.” “I liked my job but had ambitions for more, I wanted to pursue a career as a professional chef. As soon as I got my license I took a job on I-drive as a dishwasher in a much bigger and more known restaurant. It was a step backward, but it was also a foot in the door with a successful brand. Fast forward again about 3 years, I worked at few spots around Orlando, most notably the Citrus Club under chef Scott Haegele, and went to culinary school.” “Upon graduating culinary school I decided to go back to New York to learn how to transition from a cook to a chef. I got my shot, this time with accomplished chef Hung Huynh who took me under his wing, trained me, and gave me the exposure and opportunity to work with many great culinarians.” “Fast Forward another 4 years, I’m living in Miami, at this point a chef myself running various kitchens. In 2015 I created a company “Motion Hospitality Group” as a hospitality consulting business, with the intention of one day opening a place of my own. One of my first memories with food was when I was around 5 or 6, my parents weren’t home and my brother was watching me. He must have fallen asleep or something, and I made an apple omelet. The first thing I have ever cooked by my memory. What are some of your favorite dishes at Pizzeria Roberti? My favorite dishes at the pizzeria are the pesto & margherita pizzas, chicken marsala with farfalle pasta, and the pizza dough zeppoles. What do you like to cook for “comfort food” at home with your family? My Favorite thing to eat at home is Mom’s Lasagna. The Sauce “Our pizza sauce consists of a combination of San Marzano tomatoes imported from Italy and all fresh ingredients including fresh herbs and garlic. San Marzano tomatoes are known for their natural sweetness and low acidity.” The Dough “Our dough is made in house with our specially cultivated yeast, which is fermented on premise. Happy 2018, Food Friends! Can we all agree that glitter and unicorn desserts are so 2017? Well maybe not, but a girl can dream. I caught up with some of Orlando’s coolest chefs to find out what they see coming to a table near you in 2018, and here’s what they had to say. The Verdict: Crazy desserts are out; smaller, savory sweets are in Asian eats are here to stay RIP to unnecessary gluten-free dishes Say hello to veg cuisine, it’s here and it’s not playing HAWKERS Asian Street Fare – Kaleb Harrell  “Ethnic desserts – We are revamping our entire dessert line because we feel customers are ready. Desserts that have a savory edge, are fruit-based, or just have ingredients outside of mainstream will gain popularity as the size of desserts decreases. Today’s customer would rather have a few bites of something amazing to end their meal than a bowl of corn syrup. Savory cocktails – This one has been on the fringe for a while, but I think 2018 is the year for savory cocktails to take hold.  Think meat stocks, dry rub ingredients, and vegetable instead of fruit juices.  Fast and fresh – This is the mecca for market share in lunch business.  A few companies are doing well and expanding quickly, but it’s a race to see who keeps consistency. Virtually every diner is looking for a fast, and ultra fresh lunch option. How many days can you eat a Chick-fil-A salad for lunch? Vinegars and sours – Fermented flavors are gaining more popularity and will continue in the next year. Look for pickling, fermenting, gourmet mustards, and generally bold flavors in small quantities to continue.  Cheese and charcuterie are amazing, but the accoutrements are starting to take center stage.” Black Rooster Taqueria – John Calloway “I think we will see a lot of cauliflower. Gluten-free has reached its peak, so we will see more artisan and/or rustic breads and people milling their own flours. Mexican will still be everywhere, but I believe Indian food is the next big cuisine. Food as medicine will also be a big focus. From all of the juice bars to doctors and nutritionists prescribing specific foods and diets, we’ll be getting back to our roots with the earth healing our bodies.” K Restaurant – Michelle Hulbert “I think there will continue to be interest smaller desserts – that are portion-control friendly. Over-the-top, gigantic desserts will be a thing of the past. The healthier sides of sweets will include more seasonal fruits.  I think in general we will see a larger focus on vegetables as the star and less starch-heavy dishes.” K Restaurant –  Ryan McLaughlin “I think in 2018 we will see a continued movement toward more vegetable-forward dishes, a dedicated focus on limiting food waste, and an even stronger movement within the chef community to support small, sustainable farms that are focused on the ethical treatment of animals.” Tapa Toro – Wendy Lopez  “I see familiar foods becoming more prominent on menus at restaurants. Think pork rinds and hot dogs. They will be reimagined with new ingredients and presentations. I think we’ll start to see lesser-known cuts of meat appear on menus around town – like Vegas strip and Oyster steak. We’ll start to see more family-style dining options at restaurants. At Tapa Toro, we see groups of people passing plates around the table. Why commit to one entree when you could try a little bit of everything?” Pizza Bruno – Bruno Zacchini “I’ll start with pizza! For me, I see Neapolitan pizza still going strong but new styles and types will become the next thing from Detroit squares to Roman thin crusts and artisan slice pies with farm-to-table ingredients. Pizza has so many styles most people have never seen so it’s really wide open. Overall fast casual is going to keep happening and moving forward with counter service places and places focusing on singular dishes done extremely well.  Flavors for me are Middle Eastern, more regional Asian (think Bangrak), and Italian, of course! I also think that in 2018 we’ll continue to see veg-centric cuisine making its way onto more menus.” Valhalla Bakery + Valkyrie Doughnuts – Celine Duvoisin  “I see a bubble bursting of the stuff on stuff on stuff on stuff. (Not that I’m not going to do excessive shit until it dies.) I think that more Asian popularity will happen, I foresee a rise in proper ramen coming to town and possibly Asian desserts. We’ve hit this wall of sugar hell, with no one hitting the less sweet almost savory desserts. Hopefully an end to the gluten-free obsession. My fingers are crossed for more Mediterranean-type places that focus on macro-based foods as fuel instead of insanely over designed places that don’t have the food to seal the deal.” Is this roundup missing something, or are you seeing a trend worth sharing? Subscribe: [Ho Chi Minh City] A store which piqued my interest while I was researching for Vietnamese street food was The Lunch Lady, which came up as one of the common search results. Many bestowed her with the title of “legendary” street food vendor in Ho Chi Minh. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Lunch Lady (known as Nguyen Thi Thanh) propelled to fame after being featured on No Reservations. It is a food and travel programme hosted by American chef and TV personality, Anthony Bourdian. The store has since then been patronized by many other food influencers from various countries and garnered them a wide following of international visitor ship. (I looked around and noticed a few more tables with foreigners. Her specialty is noodle soup and interestingly, she has a daily rotating menu which serves only one type of noodle soup every day. Seven days in a week, she can whip up seven kinds of noodle soup such as Bun Thai, Bun Mam and Banh Canh Cua. Totally unheard of to me, and the most common Pho is not even on her menu. I wondered would the idea work in SG if I sell Bak Chor Mee Soup on Mondays, Wanton Mee Soup on Tuesdays, Hae Mee Soup on Wednesdays and etc. The amount of logistics and ingredients to buy! I visited the store on a Friday, and the noodle soup of the day was Bun Bo Hue, which translates to Spicy Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup (VND 40k, SGD$2.40). The bowl of noodle soup felt visually intimidating at first with its bright orange hue, which resembled chilli oil from Mala pot. However, I took my first mouthful but it was nothing like that. A London-based writer has illustrated how easy it is to manipulate review sites like TripAdvisor, by pushing an entirely nonexistent restaurant to the top spot in all of London. Vice writer Oobah Butler – who also recently impersonated a designer for Paris Fashion Week – already had a bit of experience with gaming review sites, having previously been paid to write fake reviews by a shady PR service.

Sneak Peek of K Restaurant’s Brunch Menu Items Debuting This Sunday

Our delightful feast was prepared by Chef de Cuisine, Ryan McLaughlin We were invited to K Restaurant in College Park to preview a few dishes from their new Brunch menu which will launch this Sunday, January 21 from 10AM-2PM and includes carafes of Mimosas & Bloody Marys. We also got to try dishes from their dining menu which changes daily according to the availability of fresh ingredients from locally sourced Central Florida farms and artisans, so be sure to check out their website beforehand for their updated menu. We enjoyed meeting the owner Chad Phelps (pictured above) and his wonderful team. The restaurant is quaint and dreamy, making it the perfect spot for a date or a casual meet-up with good friends trying out great fresh and local food. You must check out K Restaurant in College Park soon if you have not already! It is incredible. [Taipei] Ah Zong Mian Xian, otherwise known as Ay Chung Rice Noodles 阿宗麵線 used to be my favourite Mee Sua from Taipei. When I say “used to”, it could be as far a decade back when it was crowded, but not flooded with tourists like now. Unfortunately, the standard and consistency was not like in the past as the store gets more commercialised. I was recommended to Chen Ji Mee Sua 陳記專業蚵仔麵線, or Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop. Many call it the “Best Mee Sua in Taipei”, with “original local taste without over promoting”. Mee Sua is a Taiwanese dish that is basically a vermicelli soup included with large pork intestine or oysters. The noodles served with the soup should never fall apart or stick together. At least, this is what the general rule is. Chen Ji Mee Sua looked like an average Taiwanese food stand. No fanciful interior, just a counter where you can order food, and a couple of tables outside the shop. A large bowl大碗is priced at NT$65 (SGD$2.90), smaller bowl大碗at NT$50 (SGD$2.25), with clear vermicelli soup清麵線at NT$35 (SGD$1.60). If you like your pig’s intestines, then you would love the Mee Sua here. I found the pieces extremely soft, tender, and flavourful, and as a friend @eileen_eats_alot described, ”clean unlike some that have strong porky flavour”. I bought both large and small bowls to compare, and found the large bowl to be a lot more generous in ingredients. For the amount of oysters given, this bowl is reasonably priced. The consistency was smooth and thick without being sticky. Tip: Have it plain before adding some chilli and vinegar for more layered taste. Chef Trina Gregory-Propst is amazing.  She was the one who recommended my family’s restaurant, Saigon Noodle and Grill – Bumby to the Food Network producers when they asked her if she knew of any good Vietnamese restaurants in Orlando to be featured on an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”.  My family had no idea that Triple D was coming to our city (for the first time ever) so we did not expect to be contacted by them, however, when they reached out to us we knew that it was truly a blessing sent from God.  We accepted the offer to film an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” and it has changed our lives for the better.  We are now recognized worldwide and we have met so many loyal Triple D fans from all across the world.  Chef Trina’s restaurant SE7EN BITES was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Drives” and both of our restaurants are located in the Milk District, so we are actually neighbors.  What an honor it is to put our city and district on the Triple D map with Chef Trina.  My family cannot thank her enough for what she has done for our small restaraunt business.  We are so grateful for her and her awesome wife’s friendship! First Look: Sticky Rice Lao Street Food

Had a truly delicious lunch today at Sticky Rice Lao Street Food! Located on the first floor of Bikkuri in Mills 50, the owners of Sticky Rice has transformed the small restaurant into something resembling an outdoor Laotian night market stall with dark ceilings and low, wooden tables. The menu is very affordable with most dishes ranging from $4 to $5, perfect sizes for sharing over Laotian beers with friends if one chooses. You’d be tempted to order the whole menu. It reminded me of places my uncles would go to enjoy grilled meats and beers (they serve BeerLao here!) late into the night growing up. Alot of the food had flavors that reminded me of my childhood, though Vietnam is a neighbor of Laos there are some similarities as well as differences in the cuisine. I loved the char on the grilled chicken wings seasoned in fish sauce and sugar, and the crispy pork rice lettuce wrap which had little crunchy bits and pieces of roast pork. It’s important to note that the sticky rice order is meant to be eaten with other dishes such as the pork sausages or beef jerky rather than alone – making a perfect combo of carbs and meat. They also had a delicious noodle soup that reminded me of Vietnamese banh canh or udon noodle soup called khao piek sen. khao piek sen noodle soup Another favorite was the pork tapioca dumplings, sticky chewy white balls of tapioca stuffed with crispy pork and garlic! pork tapioca dumplings Save room for dessert like the sweet pandan jelly in coconut milk, mango sticky rice, and coconut gelato on purple sticky rice served inside bamboo. We dunked our sticky rice in the sweet coconut milk for that extra sweetness. Overall very impressed by the food and the authenticity of flavors at Sticky Rice – definitely will bring my family back here to try. Feast of the Seven Fishes Dinner at Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar

One of the world’s tastiest holiday traditions will receive a “Florida-style” twist with the debate of a limited time only “Feast of the Seven Fishes” menu at Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen + Bar. This menu is offered from December 24, 2017 to January 6, 2018, including a seven-course seafood and wine Christmas Eve extravaganza to kickoff the celebration. The December 24 dinner will begin at 6:30pm and is limited to the first 25 guests. We were invited to taste the menu as a sneak peak to provide everyone insight of what is to come! The Bahamian Conch Fritters are served with a mango sauce. The mango glaze adds a nice sweetness to the conch fritters. Conch fritters are crispy, yet smooth in textures. The flavors are mild without the mango sauce. The Red Grouper Ceviche is fresh and cooked nicely with a lemony zest. The Smoked Rainbow Trout Fish Dip is a tad salty, but balanced when eaten with some saltine crackers. The trout has a texture similar to tuna. Be careful as it may have bones. The reception snacks above are paired well with Col De Salici Extra Dry Prosecco, which is a vintage Prosecco. The Mayport Shrimp on Grit Cake with Seafood Gumbo Sauce was cooked really well. The grit cake is crispy on the outside, while smooth and creamy on the inside. The shrimp was caught off of Jacksonville, FL. The Nueske’s Applewood Smoke Bacon-Wrapped Scallop with Butter Beans has an abundance of textures and flavors that blend well when eaten all together. When taken apart, the bacon may be salty so make sure you’re eating it with the scallop and butter beans. The scallop is very delightful and cooked well. The butter beans were very smooth and a type of bean I would like for someone who is not fond of beans. The savory and salty plates are paired with the Stags Leap Wine Cellars Aveta Sauvignon Blanc. It is very smooth with so many notes of fruit. The fruit notes are prominent in smell before it hits your palate. The Whole Fried Hog Snapper and Black Sea Bass with Smothered Tomatoes & Okra is paired with Spatz & Hall Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast. The Fried Hog Snapper is very fresh with a corn flour seasoning. The meat has a slight sweetness to it. The Black Sea Bass is slightly dry in certain sections, but very tender and moist in other regions because the moistness depends on what area you pull the meat from. Nonetheless, the fish is very fresh! The outside is very crisp and flavorful. The Lobster Ravioli is very fresh and house made. It is served with a Seafood Bolognese Sauce that brings it all together. The lobster ravioli even tastes great alone without the sauce if you are sensitive to red sauce. It is paired with Stags Leap Wine Cellars Hands of Time Red that is full in flavor. The oyster of the Gulf Oyster Shooters (featuring Tito’s Vodka) is very fresh. There is a rim of Old Bay around the glass that goes well with the shot. It is absolutely earthy as it is suggested by the menu. The Famous Carrot Cake is famous for a reason as it is moist and has a chewy texture to it, which is delightful in my opinion. The Red Velvet Layer Cake is very moist and thick as it coats the palate. The cakes are paired with the Prunotto Moscato D’ Asti. The Prunotto Moscato D’ Asti is very smooth and delightful for a dessert wine as I am not usually fond os sweet wines. This dessert wines is not as sweet as the usual dessert wines that are paired. Wakanui Grill Dining – Steakhouse Using Meats From New Zealand And Cooking Techniques Of Japan, At Marina One

On the 4th level of the rather futuristic looking (like off a Hollywood set) of Marina One lies two glass capsules. One of them contains Wakanui Grill Dining, an 86-seater restaurant which features steak and lamb from New Zealand. Wakanui, a New Zealand term meaning “to canoe over the land of plenty”’ is a grill restaurant concept that showcases the best available meats from the country. Its first outlet opened in Tokyo in 2011, and its success soon meant the opening of its second outlet there, focusing on lamb chops. Therefore, you could also find some Japanese influences in the menu over in Singapore’s outlet. The stars and the essence of the restaurant are therefore the New Zealand Ocean Beef and Wakanui Spring Lamb, which are grilled over Japan-sourced Binchotan charcoal in the centrally-placed, open kitchen. Starters included Neck Clam Soup ($12), Steamed Green Lip New Zealand Mussels ($22), Hot Smoked Salmon ($24), Seasonal Hassun ($32), Kikorangi Blue Cheese Caesar ($22) and Green Salad ($16) I was recommended by the service manager the Wakanui Spring Lamb Chop ($8) as the starter, and it turned out to be quite exceptional. The lamb had intense flavour and retained its natural juiciness, without the usual gaminess lamb would have. In fact, this would count as one of the most tender lamb chops I ever had. The Wakanui Spring Lamb are raised for approximately six months on the lush and highly nutritious spring pastures, with meat then aged for around four weeks until reaching its peak flavour. This process would ensure that the optimum flavour and texture of the lamb can be enjoyed year-round. Yappy Hour at K Restaurant + Wine Bar

On Monday, Dec. 11, K Restaurant launched their first, monthly, Yappy Hour. To inaugurate this series of tail-wagging fun they have partnered with Woof Orlando from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Orlando locals are invited to bring their furry four-legged friends out and enjoy free spent-grain dog treats made from local breweries and enter-to-win two raffles with prizes including gift certificates for a free grooming. We were able to experience what “Doggie chaperones” can expect when it comes to tongue-in-cheek Yappy Hour dishes from Chef Ryan McLaughlin as well as drink specials as K Restaurant is excited to share that they just received their full liquor license. Crispy Pig Ears are fried with dates pepper hot sauce and herbs. The pig ears are sliced thinly to make them crispy like a chip. They are lightly salted and delicious with or without the hot sauce. Be careful, the hot sauce is thick and has a major kick to it. “Pawsta” is fried ravioli with ricotta filling. Served on marinara with pecorino cheese and herbs. The fried version of ravioli is very airy like a puff pastry. Each ingredient subtly blends well together upon the palate. “Milk Bones” are veal bone marrow bones with charred bread and radishes. The bone marrow is very smooth and works well with the bread and radishes. The charred bread adds a saltiness to each bite. We almost ordered a second round of this dish! The Cosmo-paw-litan (left) is made with vodka, orange shrubb, lime, and cranberry juice. A simple drink to socialize with. The Snoop Dog (right) was our favorite out of these two. The Snoop Dog is made with gin and pineapple juice; it is like a tropical version of a Screwdriver. Since we were still slightly hungry after all the samplings, we ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi off the main menu, which changes up from time to time so you can come back to try new items all the time. The Ricotta Gnocchi is made with duck confit, butternut squash, garden greens, brussel sprouts, and sage veloute. Everything is made in-house and as fresh as possible for each order. Our specific plate was a tad more salty than I would prefer, but the dish is still delicious nonetheless. The Ricotta Gnocchi was paired nicely with a 2014 Carmenere made in Valle Del Maule, Chile. We were invited to check out the new Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Winter Park and we got to try a few of their menu items.  I LOVE smoothies.  They are my favorite thing to consume whether I am at work, home, or just finished a grueling workout and want something ice-cold and replenishing in my system to hold me over until I get ahold of some food.  Fortunately, Tropical Smoothie Cafe sells smoothies and hot items, so you can get both on the same stop.  The new Winter Park store is beautiful, bright, clean, and inviting and the smoothie and hot items were fresh and delicious.  You can expect to see me in line tomorrow morning trying to win free smoothies for a whole year! Detox Island Green (seasonal) – Spinach, kale, mango, pineapple, banana & fresh ginger (naturally sweetened).   The serving is generous, the smoothie had a great consistency and it tasted fresh.  I really enjoyed the fresh ginger in it too, since it’s so good for you! Cali Chicken Club Flatbread – Bacon, smashed avocado, tomatoes, romaine, mozzarella & basil garlic mayo.  This was my favorite! Buffalo Chicken Wrap – Made it vegetarian by substituting the chicken strips with Beyond Meat®Chicken-Free Strips, no lite ranch & mozzarella, and adding extra avocado & veggies.  It includes tomatoes, romaine and buffalo sauce.  This was my second favorite! Turkey Bacon Ranch Sandwich – Bacon, tomatoes, a romaine spinach blend, swiss & lite ranch on ciabatta Kale & Apple Slaw – It was really good.  The best kale & apple slaw that I have ever had in my life.  I loved the flavors of their sweet dressing, apple slices and julienne carrot married together to balance out the kale which is naturally bitter but so good for you as well! It was quite a journey to locate Purist Patisserie, for it was smack right in the middle of a Kovan private housing estate, with no direct train or bus services. Situated at the end of shop houses of The Promenade @ Pelikat, it may be easy to overlook the shop if not for its bright pink interior and rose gold chandelier which caught my attention. Also note its rather limited opening hours, from Fridays to Sundays noon to 6pm. Not the most ideal location to set up a patisserie, but that does not deters Patissier Joanne from pursuing her dreams and setting up a place of her own to showcase her creations. Joanne’s forte lies in French entremet, which her meticulous crafting skills can be observed from the exquisiteness and aesthetic details of every entremet. But when it comes to taste evaluation, it is usually based on Patissiers’ concept as well as individuals’ preference due to the complexity and various components that go into the dessert. I took a liking to the Cebu Sunrise [$8] which consisted of coconut, mango and jasmine rice. The light coconut mousse was well complemented with sweet mango gelatin fillings and added rice cracker base for that crunch. The most aesthetical pleasing award would go to Fleur ($8), layered with thin waffle biscuit base, raspberry mousse and white chocolate. It was further topped with freeze-dried fruits, popping spheres and edible flowers for elevated appealing factor. I also liked how various components blended well to give an overall tangy note. While I usually love matcha desserts, the Zen Garden ($8) slightly fell short of my expectation. Layered with matcha, black sesame and yuzu, I found the citrus flavor of yuzu slightly overwhelming and outshone the other two components. For alcohol lovers, go for the Whiskey Bar...

Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice 金峰魯肉飯 – Popular Lu Rou Fan Eatery In Taipei

[Taipei] Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice is a well-known eatery (at least among the locals) in Taipei that serves one of the most popular Taiwanese dishes, “Lu Rou Fan” otherwise known as Braised Pork Rice). There are several other places in the Roosevelt Road (Luosifu Lu) neighbourhood that serve braised pork rice, but this hole-in-the-wall dining spot has a reputation for being the best in town. The good news is that this place is budget-friendly with reasonably priced dishes that come in big portions. Keep in mind that there is usually a line in front of Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, especially during lunch hours. Do not expect too much from the interior, as this place is more like casual local eatery than an actual restaurant. The tables are close to one another, and there is a chance that you will have to share a table with other guests. If you are in a hurry, you can always take your food to go. The Braised Pork Rice, priced at NT$30, NT$40, NT$50 (SGD$1.30, SGD$1.80, SGD$2.50) for their small, medium and large bowls, is definitely the signature dish here at Jin Feng in Taipei. The dish is served with a large amount of rice and topped off with a slice of bitter melon and braised pork. One thing to note is that while Singaporeans are used to bowls with loads of meat with less rice. The reverse seems to apply to many Lu Rou Fan stalls in Taiwan where there is very little meat in contrast to rice. I also noticed that other restaurants that offer this dish tend to serve it with more fat than meat, which is not the case here. While Chen San Ding is widely known to serve “bubble tea”, there is no tea in any of its offerings. The signature drink is called 青蛙撞奶, directly transported to “frog knocking against the milk”. No frogs are harmed in the process, as the boba (tapioca pearls) used are thought to resemble frog’s eggs. What you get is a cup of boba pearls, caramel, cold milk, with choice of ice. All drinks are affordable priced at TWD40, which works out to be SGD$1.80. This is what you call cheap and good. Upon holding the cup, I couldn’t help noticing that the bottom was warm while the top layer was cold. That is because the tapioca pearls are cooked on the spot in brown sugar, giving them the soft texture and lingering sweetened and caramalised taste. The pearls were indeed soft, sweet, chewy and you just couldn’t resist having more. Like having a mini-party in your mouth. It felt like a kind of stress-relieving munching on them. The milk itself was not that sweet, which made the entire cup kind of balanced. Other drinks such as Ai Yu Glass Jelly, Brown Sugar Glass Jelly, Lemon with Pearls, Green Bean with Pearls are available, all priced at TWD40. The one Korean dish that I enjoy for the level of comfort it brings is the Soontofu, the soft tofu stew with ingredients such as seafood and vegetables in a spicy broth. “Soon” in Korean means “soft”. SBCD Korean Tofu House is one of the few Soontofu specialty restaurants in Singapore, with branches at Tanjong Pagar Centre and a newly opened outlet at Millenia Walk. The Millenia Walk branch was HUGE (at least in Singapore’s context), with spacious interior, tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and open kitchen concept where you can observe the team of chefs preparing the soups. Don’t have to worry smelling like Korean stew as you walk out as the space is ventilated enough. One important highlight: At the back of the Korean restaurant is where the soft and silken tofu is made FRESH daily. The tofu you are eating is made right in the morning. The chefs from SBCD use special soybeans imported from Paju, South Korea. The area is said to be close to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and contains the freshest-tasting produce due to the untouched nature. Surprise, surprise. The Korean restaurant has also introduced NEW Jang-Eo (장어) dishes – fresh water eel imported from Korea. While the Jang-Eo is popular during the hot summer days in Korea, you seldom see it in Singapore, at least not yet. The NEW menu will comprise of 4 new Jang-Eo dishes including three under the dine-in menu and one for takeaway. Here are the food items you can expect: Unagi Main on Hotplate ($19.90++, with Soju $29.80++) The Koreans love their Jang-Eo – freshwater eel marinated in novelty sauces, with savoury and delicate taste. Kazo – Taiwanese Kazu Kazu, Lava Polo Buns And ‘Sexy’ Matcha Latte Bottles, At Chinatown Point

Taiwanese Bakery Kazo has opened at Chinatown Point (nearer Hong Lim Food Centre side), offering a selection of Polo Buns, Cream Puffs, and Kazu Kazu which are long choux pastries. The brand is supposedly popular in Taiwan, with a different name of Nichifu 日芙洋菓子 with stores in Taichung. (My Taiwanese friends have never heard of it though.) Having just returned from Taiwan, I was inevitably curious towards Kazo and its products. Offerings included Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50 for 2 scoops, $3.80 for 1), Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00), Crispy Cream Puff ($1.80), Kazu Kazu ($3.50), Cheese Tart ($3.00 for original, $3.20 for chocolate or matcha) and Kazoman Beverages ($3.00 – $3.50). This is like many things trending / instagrammable all in one store. The Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50) could remind some of Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff, in which you could choose from Hokkaido Cream, Matcha, and Chocolate. The former boosted a more crusty puff pastry and creamier quality ice cream, but lacked of that buttery fragrance. While I wished I could eat the Polo with my hands (like how the photos featured). In reality, the ice cream would start dripping within seconds and scooping from the provided plastic box would be cleaner. I was curious how the Kazu Kazu would match up with the famous Japan’s Zaku Zaku – which by the way has opened in Taipei and ‘inspired’ many other versions. This Kazu Kazu had a firmer crusty outer layer which I did not mind, though its filling of Hokkaido cream was mild and pale in comparison. My sense is the Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00) could land up being its most popular item, as local consumers are still fascinated by the idea of flowing lava. Mine was indeed very molten. We were invited to the media preview and grand opening of Maria and Enzo’s Ristorante with a special dedication moment including leadership from Disney, Patina Restaurant Group and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.  Following the dedication, we went inside the brand new Italian restaurant for a media reception and we celebrated National Spaghetti Day with some apps, pasta, wines, cocktails and sweet treats; perfect for the occasion.  Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante is a warm and dreamy restaurant with friendly staff, delicious food, and airline themed aesthetics that is adventurous and playful. The backstory is that the building was a once-abandoned Disney Springs airline terminal from the 1930s.  Italian immigrants Maria and Enzo owned a small bakery business inside the airline terminal and they purchased the entire building after the airline terminal closed down.  As an airline pilot, Enzo was drawn to the abandoned airline terminal and to open a spacious restaurant in it was a dream of his and Maria, who both wanted to introduce Italian cuisine to guests at Disney Springs. [Taipei] Instagram has certainly changed consumer habits and how coffee shops keep themselves abreast in a very challenging market. Mr R Drinks 雨田先生手冲饮品吧 at Zhongxiao East Road got into the social media limelight with its very photogenic drinks of Rose Milk and Marsh Milk Tea aka Mr Fox Milk Tea. Sometimes, you get other animals on the drink. Do not discount Mr R Drinks, or “Yu Tian Xian Sheng” as another one of those just riding on the Instagram trend. The barista-owner is serious about his coffee, importing coffee beans from various parts of the world, offering hand-drips and takeaway cups. Until he was overwhelmed with orders. When I visited, the shop had a limited menu of Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10), Rose Milk, Strawberry Milk and Baileys Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Apple Cider (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Umeshu Soda (NT$140, SGD$6.30), Pikachu Soda (NT$65, SGD$2.90) and… Miso Soup (NT$90, SGD$4). As this is a one-man-show operation and lines can be long, every customer is limited to buying just one cup. During peak hours, you have to get a ticket first before queuing. The barista was seen frothing and making his drinks cup by cup, so wait can be rather long. Each cup took at least 5 to 10 minutes to make. I ordered the Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10) only because I was intrigued at the cute fox on the drink. Like how it got there? However, I was slightly disappointed when he handed me a hot frothy cup of milk tea on one hand, a fox on the other enclosed in a plastic packaging, and told me to put it on myself. I see. Winter, brief it may be, has arrived to Central Florida with the latest frosty blasts covering most of our region this past week. The Spanish-inspired Bulla Gastrobar has recently debuted their Winter Menu, featuring savory, hearty dishes that will certainly warm any foodie’s appetite this winter. Here is the menu: Sabores de Invierno Winter Menu Padrones Rellenos $8 – Shishito peppers stuffed with Mahon cheese, encrusted with panko crumbs and a spicy tomato dipping sauce Caldo Gallego $8 – Galician Soup, White beans, pork shank, chorizo, kale Piquillos a la Vizcaina $11 – Ground beef and pork stuffed piquillo peppers, bechamel sauce, black currants Lechon Asado $23 – Slow Roasted Pig, Pork Demi, Panadera Potatoes Chuletas de Cordero $23 – Lamb Chops, Honey Beer Reduction, Kale, Potato Foam Some of my favorites from the menu included the: Padrones rellenos, crunchy panko crusted, stuffed shisito peppers filled with mahon cheese – each bite oozes with warm cheese – perfect. The Piquillos a la Vizcaina, stuffed piquillo peppers were both savory and sweet – savory from the ground beef and pork and bechamel cheese sauce but also a touch of sweetness from the black currant reduction and nutty sliced almonds. If you are a fan of lamb chops, try the chuletas de cordero – subtly sweet from honey reduction, it’s a hearty dish with delicate potato foam and crispy kale. My absolute favorite on the menu is the lechon asado, thrice cooked slow roasted pig with a pork demi sauce and panadera potatoes – thick and juicy, the pork just melts in your mouth with the crispy pork skin is a fantastic treat. The melonpan with ice cream, a Japanese sweet bun, reminded me of our popular local street food: Ice Cream Sandwich. The $1 Ice Cream Sandwich sold along the streets in pushcarts had always been one of Singapore’s Must-Eat items, so popular that it made into one of BuzzFeed’s listicles in 2016, which (unfortunately) went viral for the wrong reason. The Japanese melonpan (also known as melon bun) was named due to its outward appearance which resembled that of a rock melon, but in fact doesn’t taste like one traditionally. Located at the basement level of Our Tampines Hub is Singapore’s first melonpan specialty shop, offering Plain MelonPan in 2 different sizes: Small (1 for $2.60, 5 for $10) and Large (1 for $3.40, 3 for $9), MelonPan Gelato with 3 options: Small melon pan with 1 choice of flavour ($4.80), Small melon pan with 2 flavours ($6.80) and Large melon pan with 2 flavours ($7.80). Order and payment is first made at the casher before proceeding to the right for selection of gelato flavours from their wide selection on display. Interesting flavours include Avocado, Chendol, Honeycomb, Yuzu and D24 Durian, which are local and relatable. Toppings such as Sunflower seeds, Rainbow sprinkle and Peanuts are available at an additional $0.60 whereas durian toppings are priced at $2.50. I chose the Avocado and Black Sesame Gelato to go with my Large MelonPan Gelato ($7.80) that came with 2 rusks (twice-baked bread). The rusk actually acted as a “spoon” to scoop the gelato instead of licking or biting directly into it. I made the mistake of eating my “spoon” (accidentally) and ended up in a mess while licking the gelato though. [Seoul] When I needed a good coffee recommendation, food blogger Daniel (yeah, same name) from Seoul Eats took me to Coffee Libre 커피리브레at Hong Dae near Hongik University Station. The thing that makes Coffee Libre stand out from other coffee shops in the city is the fact that the owners are dedicated to coffee. This is from sourcing the best coffee beans in the world, and choosing to have different brewing methods. Established in 2012, Coffee Libre 커피리브레 is an independent coffee shop in Seoul with branches in Yeonnam-dong, Yeongdeung-po, Shinsegae, and Myeongdong. The name of the coffee shop comes from the Spanish word “libre”, which translates to Mexican luchador wrestlers. The icon on the cup did remind me of Jack Black’s character from the Mexican-American sports comedy film Nacho Libre. Coffee Libre grinds beans for every single cup of coffee, and they have participated in dozens of coffee-related events in the country. I have been to 3 different branches of Coffee Libre. Hong Dae’s branch has more indie vibes for coffee aficionados; Time Square has a much bigger space and appeals more to the young; while Myeongdong’s outlet is a hidden spot right in the middle of a tourist hub. This small branch of Coffee Libre in Myeongdong boasts a quite unusual location, as it is situated within the Myeong-dong Cathedral complex. Yes, right in front of the famous church. The interior is simple and cozy with several tables and a long bar. Guests can choose to either drink their coffee indoors or take it to go. They are especially known for sourcing their single-origin coffee beans via fair-trade directly, and obtaining highly regarded CoE (Cup of Excellence) beans as well. Enjoying a coffee on your commute used to be standard procedure for many bus-riding residents in South Korea’s capital – but no longer. Last week Seoul officially began enforcing a new ban: no takeaway coffee cups are to be allowed on public buses.

The city ordinance is designed to prevent the accidental spills that had become an increasing annoyance and danger for passengers and a source of disputes in transit. It’s a bold move given the popularity of coffee houses and micro-roasters in this city of more than 10 million. Seoul’s bus drivers now have the authority to turn away anyone carrying a disposable coffee cup; the rules also apply to would-be passengers with foul-smelling food or other products.

Florida-based breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant chain First Watch has recently unrolled a new coffee program, called Project Sunrise, using a new single-origin coffee sourced from women coffee growers in Huila, Colombia. The coffee program helps support a women-led growers organization called Mujeres en Café in Huila, Colombia. Traditionally, the coffee growing industry in Colombia has been male-dominated. Due to the country’s decades-long civil conflict, many women in Huila lost their husbands, brothers and sons and have now taken over the family business. Together, they formed Mujeres en Café and embarked on a mission to create sustainable businesses that elevate the lives of their families and improve conditions in their rural communities. “During our visit to Huila, we met groups of women in several villages who have dedicated their lives to producing great coffee. They are proud of their work and were eager to welcome us into their homes, walk us through their farms and share their stories,” Shane Schaibly, corporate chef and VP of culinary strategy for First Watch, said in an announcement of the new coffee program. “Each year, we serve more than 8 million cups of coffee in our restaurants. Through Project Sunrise, that gives us 8 million incredible opportunities to support these hard-working women and their families in Huila in 2018.” The high-quality beans these women grow and harvest in Huila are exported to the U.S. and roasted by the experts at Royal Cup Coffee in Birmingham, Alabama, exclusively for First Watch. The restaurant company pays a premium for these single-origin beans, which will be relayed back to the women farmers in Huila to help improve their quality of life and help facilitate their operations. Schaibly spent months working with coffee growers and roasters to develop a coffee that would complement the complex dishes, flavors and textures found on the First Watch menu. First Watch’s new Project Sunrise coffee fits the bill – it features a medium body, with hints of cherry, orange, toasted nuts, honey, milk chocolate and caramel, which makes for an ideal complement to First Watch’s variety of fresh breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes. We were invited to check out this free and public event hosted by Sonny’s BBQ last Saturday at Williams Sonoma on Park Avenue in partnership with Peterbrooke Chocolatier.  I loved that the event landed on a Saturday afternoon because I frequent the popular Winter Park Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings so I was able to pick up a few things and walk over to the cooking demo afterwords.  During our cooking demo we learned how to make Stuffed Pork Loin with Cranberry Agave Glaze, Smoked Turkey, Gruyère Potatoes, and Chocolate Bacon Holiday Bark.  Everything was delicious! [Taipei] Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 is known to be one of the best Taiwanese beef noodle joints in Taipei, well-known for its spicy soup. This two-level restaurant serves up signature Beef Noodles with tender Australian beef and chewy noodles in a flavourful broth, definitively a winner judging by the line in front of this dining establishment. (The other famous shop in the neighbourhood is 老张牛肉麵店 Lao Zhang Beef Noodles.) I went at about 10:45am and there were about 2-3 people in the line. Thinking that it should be okay if I take a stroll around the neighbourhood, I returned at 11:00am only to see about 30 – 40 people in the queue already. Many of them brought along their luggage or entire families. Lesson learnt: Come early. Yong Kang Beef Noodles was founded back in 1963 by Mr. Cheng who originally from Szechuan in China. After he finished his military duties, Mr. Cheng decided to open a small stall at Yong Kang Street and sell beef noodles. The stall became an instant hit and started to attract both locals and people from China who moved here to Taipei City. After Mr. Cheng retired in the 1970s, the place was handed over to his protégé, Mr. Luo who is the current owner. As for the interior, it has not much changed over the years. There are dozens of tables and they are usually packed with customers. You will also see the counter with a menu to choose from. There is also a tourist-friendly English and Japanese menu with photos. Most of the tables are round and can accommodate up to 6 people. If you come solo or in a pair, you are likely to be seated with other patrons. Their signature dish is the Braised Beef with Noodles in Spicy...

The Return Of The Taiwanese Bubble Tea craze in Singapore sees old players such as Gong Cha, Singapore brand LiHo and Taiwan’s PlayMade 丸作, all of them with difference in their areas of specialty. Let’s just say Gong Cha is known for their Alisan Milk Foam, LiHo for Cheese drinks (which is now everywhere) and PlayMade 丸作 for their freshly made pearls. Bobii Frutii will be opening its first store in Singapore at The Clementi Mall. I first tried Bobii Frutii 珍珠水果特調 in Taipei which attracted a crowd initially due to its distinct coloured and “Instagram-worthy” layers. Each cup is made using milk, tea and colourful pearls, with no artificial flavourings, man-made essences, creamer or preservatives. The menu in Singapore features a total of 37 drinks in a single cup size and divided into 5 different categories – Tea/Au Lait aka “served with milk” in French ($2.50 – $3.90), Ice Blended ($5.90 – $6.90), Matcha ($4.90 – $6.50), Fruit Tea ($3.90 – $5.90) and Cheese Tea, exclusive to Singapore ($4.50 – $5.90). Pearls aka bobii (Taiwanese slang for tapioca pearls) that are preservative-free come in 3 different flavours: Original ($0.60), Butterfly Pea ($0.90) and Brown Sugar ($0.90), are made in Taiwan and air-flown to Singapore to ensure freshness and consistency. One thing to note, the bobii in each cup is considerably less compared to other competitor brands out there. Apart from their aesthetically pleasing appearance, each of their signature items have funky names that made me wonder what the flavours are, so I gave up on their names and ended up ordering by colours. “Hi, can I have the blue and yellow layered drink?” “Oh, you mean Mermaid’s Tears?” “Ya, that one.” I cried. Sugar Miss – Popular Instagrammable Marble Cube Cake And Marble Cheese Cake At Taipei

[Taipei] One of Taipei’s most instagrammable dessert café of late has to be Sugar Miss, with photos of their famed Marble Cube Cake trending in several social media feeds (at least the Chinese ones). The Marble Cube Cakes come with varied fillings of matcha, raspberry and taro, available in very limited quantities. Each is priced about NT$240 – 265 (SGD$10.80 – SGD$11.90), considered on the higher side for Taiwan, though Singaporeans should be used to these prices for cakes. Do note there is a minimum expenditure of NT$200 required for each customer, which should be easily met as long as you get a drink. Reservations are recommended, as the café can get very popular during the weekends. As I arrived about 2pm, there were just 2 Marble Cube Cake left. The décor looked rather “Lady M” – all clean, white with marbled tables, and ironically Lady M Taipei is just located a short distance away with a moderately long queue. The entire vibes felt rather ‘cold’ though, without the extreme friendliness you see at other Taipei café places. Other offerings included the best-selling Marble Cheese Cake (NT$190 per slice, SGD$8.50), and Mille Crepe Cakes with flavours of Matcha Milk, Earl Grey, Valrhona Chocolate, Taro and Seasonal Fruit (NT$180 – 230, SGD$8.00 – 10.30). The Marble Cube Cake was certainly a good-looker, different from other conventional cakes, placed on a marbled plate on white table. This café certainly knows about how to get good lighting for optimal photos. Unfortunately, taste wise, it wasn’t the most impressive. It was OKAY. While the top molten layer looked melty, it was solidified and didn’t add much taste wise. Beneath was a chiffon layer and raspberry fillings that didn’t quite flow at all.
