WHAT I ATE: Pork & preserved egg congee (porridge) WHY IT'S GREAT: This meal is cheap and easy. Simplicity with a mouthful of flavor. Smooth, creamy and comforting. 11 Great Places To Rent A Summer Lake House (That Probably Aren’t Your First Guess)

by FlipKey @ The FlipKey Blog

Best Lake House Vacations Forget the oceanfront hotel. We’re all about a stunning lake house this summer. Okay, so we’re not totally against the beach. But there’s another type of vacation that was made for America: a classic summer cottage on the lake. Or a cozy cabin. How about an eight-bedroom summer lodge for a full-family affair? You get the point. America boasts some of the best lake destinations in the world for outdoor recreation, incredible scenery, and action-packed adventure. In other words: the perfect combination of activities for a thrilling (or relaxing) summer escape. A summer lake house often comes with kayaks, canoes, paddleboards or even your own personal boat for use (assuming you have a license)! You’ll stay just steps to the water—or hiking trails—and enjoy substantial privacy. But with so many great lake house options, where should you choose? Enter FlipKey. We’ve bypassed the touristy, crowded lakes—nobody wants to share the bay with other jet skiers, after all—and instead identified 11 amazing summer lake retreats that aren’t quite as…occupied. You’ll find affordable summer cottages and cabins in each of these spots just waiting for you to make new lifelong memories. Deep Creek Lake, Maryland Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake has everything you could dream of in a summer vacation. The surrounding towns of McHenry, Oakland and Swanton all offer lake house rentals of various types. Get the adrenaline pumping with whitewater rafting or opt for more leisurely pursuits in fly-fishing, a scenic kayak ride, horseback trek or walking through Deep Creek Lake State Park. A summer lodge, complete with outdoor patio and barbecue grill, is the perfect home base after the day’s adventure. As night falls, spark up the fire pit and gaze at the stars. See all rentals in Deep Creek Lake on FlipKey! Moosehead Lake, Maine As its name would suggest, this Maine gem has abundant wildlife. When you aren’t fishing for landlocked salmon or trout, keep your eyes peeled for moose and other four-legged friends that roam the land. A summer cottage on Moosehead Lake puts you just steps to unlimited water recreation. And the lake is especially good for canoeing and kayaking, boasting tons of hidden coves, inlets and islands to explore. Lake houses are mostly located in the towns of Greenville and Rockwood, both offering rentals from charming summer cottages to classic log cabins. Some properties even come with personal ATVs – the trails around the lake are ripe for off-roading. See all Moosehead Lake rentals on FlipKey! Minocqua, Wisconsin Part of the “Lakeland” area of Northern Wisconsin, Minocqua is a small town as cozy as the summer cabins themselves. There’s the aptly named Lake Minocqua, plus Blue Lake, Kawaguesaga Lake and Tomohawk Lake all in a short vicinity of each other. If you’re seeking a peaceful summer escape, look no further. Vacation rentals here are fewer than some other popular lake spots, meaning your summer cottage will have the utmost privacy. Enjoy a morning coffee on the porch while watching water skiers slice across the clear waters. Choose to join them with some aquatic adventures, or simply take another sip as the sun warms the air. See all rentals in Lake Minocqua on FlipKey! Lake George, New York This 32-mile-long “Queen of American Lakes” is chock-full of summer lodging, attractions, eateries and just about any form of recreation you can name. Take your pick: parasailing, fishing, diving, jet skiing, hiking, golfing, mini-golf, horseback riding and more. If you’ve got kids in tow, you can spend a day at the Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom, New York’s largest amusement park. Hikers gravitate to Prospect Mountain, which offers panoramic views from the top. Among the cleanest and clearest of major US lakes, Lake George is as splendid today as when Thomas Jefferson described it as “…without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw.” See all rentals in Lake George on FlipKey! Grand Lake, Colorado Take your family to Grand Lake and enjoy stunning Shadow Mountain scenery with the tranquility of a private summer lake house. Spend a lazy afternoon lounging on the hammock, or rent a pontoon boat for leisurely lake cruising – just don’t forget to bring the cooler! Nearby Rocky Mountain National Park offers great hiking trails, often shared with deer, elk and foxes. See all rentals in Grand Lake on FlipKey! Lake Champlain, New York Lake Champlain is one of the Eastern United States’ most beautiful attractions. It stretches almost the full length of Vermont, separating the Green Mountain State from neighboring New York. Summer lake houses are abundant in many of the surrounding towns, most notably Shelburne, Colchester, Burlington and the Grand Isles (VT); and Plattsburgh, Keeseville and Willsboro (NY). Lake Champlain is great for families, offering calm waters and great outdoor recreation. For a unique cabin experience, stay in a Burlington rental right on the lake. You’ll be close to the charming downtown area of Church Street (shops, bars, restaurants and live music), yet have adventurous activities like hiking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating and swimming right at your fingertips. See all rentals in Lake Champlain on FlipKey! Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire Meredith is New Hampshire’s go-to lakeside destination, with Lake Winnipesaukee offering incredible summer lodges, cottages and cabins for groups of all sizes. Popular with 20- and 30-somethings, Lake Winnipesaukee visitors are often a lively bunch, enjoying the water sports and warm weather to the fullest. Though there’s still plenty of privacy to be had, as many rentals have their own docks at secluded areas along the lake. See all rentals in Lake Winnipesaukee on FlipKey! Soldotna and Sterling, Alaska Heading to The Last Frontier? You’ll soon be basking in the dramatic, diverse terrain of wide-open spaces, mountains and forests, with wildlife galore and many small towns. If it’s a summer lake house you seek, just follow the Kenai River! The gorgeous body of water runs westward from Kenai Lake to the Cook Inlet, through the towns of Sterling and Soldtona. A summer rental here is as close to nature as you can get without actually camping. It’s truly a mesmerizing experience, capped by the “midnight sun” –  when the sun sets around 12:00am due to the long daylight hours during summer season. See all rentals in Soldotna on FlipKey! See all rentals in Sterling on FlipKey! Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia Talk to anyone about a Virginia vacation and you’ll hear about Williamsburg’s rich history or the boardwalk at Virginia Beach. But avid summer vacationers would be wise to consider a different destination, some 240 miles away from the ocean. We’re talking about Smith Mountain Lake, the state’s popular lakeside retreat though not as frequented by the outside masses. A summer cottage on “SML” means sunshine, scenery and s’mores all week long. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountain landscape, with most rental accommodations in the community of Moneta. See all rentals in Smith Mountain Lake on FlipKey! Coeur d’Alene, Idaho If we were giving out nicknames, Lake Coeur d’Alene would get “that of many bays.” Summer lodges are cozily tucked within numerous bays across the lake, like Bennett Bay, Windy Bay, Sun Up Bay, Kokanee Bay and Rockford Bay, to name a few. This means plenty of privacy and calm, kid-friendly waters. But Coeur d’Alene is notable for more than its stunning lake: it’s a unique combination of five-star resort town (fine dining, theaters, golf courses and spas) and natural wonder (unspoiled hiking trails, scenery for days). An affordable cabin gives you the best of both worlds – sunshine free of charge. See all rentals in Coeur d’Alene on FlipKey! Mount Desert, Maine Mount Desert may better be known as the side of Acadia National Park that doesn’t include Bar Harbor, which makes it the perfect uncrowded, relaxing escape for a summer lake house. Echo Lake and Long Pond Lake are the two staples for outdoor recreation or leisurely sunbathing. Picture this: you’re eating breakfast on your private patio looking out over the vast clear waters. The kids are readying for a day of swimming, canoeing or kayaking. Maybe even a ride on the pontoon boat. As evening falls, the family enjoys a home-cooked meal before a nightcap in the hot tub. Pure bliss. See all rentals in Mount Desert on FlipKey! This post was originally published on the TripAdvisor Rentals blog. FlipKey is a TripAdvisor company.

Review: Shangri-La Colombo

Review: Shangri-La Colombo

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

I had a quick one night stopover in Colombo. I arrived at around 5PM, and was leaving the next morning at around 9AM. The city of Colombo is quite a ways from the airport, though there aren't any good airport hotels, as far as I know. Fortunately there's an expressway connecting the city to the airport, so while it's quite a distance, the drive only takes 30-45 minutes, assuming you're not traveling during rush hour.

In the past I've reviewed the Hilton Colombo, which is serviceable though nothing special. I was quite excited this time around when I noticed that a gorgeous-looking Shangri-La just recently opened in Colombo. I didn't realize this was under construction. The only hotel I was anticipating was the Grand Hyatt, which has been under construction for years, though it seems like that won't be opening, unfortunately.

The rate at the Shangri-La Colombo was about $180 for my one night stay, which is expensive for Colombo, but not unreasonable by international standards. I managed to get a bit more value out of that rate, as Ford was able to book me through Shangri-La's Luxury Circle program, which comes with extra benefits like a room upgrade, a $50 food & beverage credit, complimentary breakfast, and more.

Review: Bangkok Food Tours - One Mile at a Time

One Mile at a Time

As we’d had such an incredible experience on our recent food tour in Madrid, we decided to try something similar in Bangkok. I thought it was a great way to get to know a new city, and felt the girls would be more comfortable experiencing some new foods and eating styles if the environment was a bit more structured. The reviews on TripAdvisor were good, so we settled on the Midnight Tour from Bangkok Food Tours. If nothing else, we figured it would keep us out of the hotel and help us adjust to the new time zone without requiring too much mental coordination.Taking a toddler on a series of late-night tuk tuk rides is a recipe for disaster, so Heather and her husband drew straws for babysitting duty, and it ended up just being five of us on the tour. A very festive five of us, as the tour guide gave us santa hats when we arrived at the meeting point. The meeting point for Bangkok Food Tours was at Chamchuri Square, which was about a 30 minute walk from the Royal Orchid Sheraton.Since we’d been on planes all day we decided to walk, which ended up being fascinating (though odiferous). I’m not sure if my favorite part was listening to my husband explain the difference between a laundry shop and a “laundry” shop to my nieces, stepping around the people who were sleeping on the sidewalks, or the rat that ran across my foot while we were waiting to cross the street. But, you know, at least it wasn’t a sterile experience.

Discover Wales

by karl @ Yummy Planet

In 2013, we crossed the English Channel with some friends to discover Wales. I initially wrote this post on my own blog, Hobography. I share with you some of my favorite places in Pembrokeshire. While a lot of people think there’s only London or Scotland in the UK that are worth to spend your holidays at, why wouldn’t you try Wales? If you’re looking for a change instead of going every year in French Brittany, this may be the place you’re looking for! It is on my way to London in the Eurostar that I first wanted to discover Wales. I met this Welsh man so fond of his homeland that he spent the entire 2 hours ride filling my mind with all sorts of stories about the people, the landscapes and so on. I wonder… is there any Welsh person who’s not in love with Wales? A few months later here I am finally discovering Wales with Frédérique, some friends, and Pim’s (our dog). Having only one week to spend there we decided to focus on Pembrokeshire’s Coast path and Cardiff. This was the first time that I left the city streets since I decided to commit myself seriously to photography and I realized how difficult it […]

I decided to offer the tour in downtown because I have a connection to the downtown community that starts from my childhood. I've been to Las Vegas, but I don't really know much about the history. Can you share a little about the history? Vegas (as we know it today) started as a rail town in 1905 named The Clark Las Vegas Townsite. The ultimate tapas guide

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

Standing in front of the chalkboard menu in a Spanish tapas bar, you’re tensed. You need to order, and fast. Otherwise you’ll face the wrath of the waiter. But what is the best choice? The list is huge and… written in Spanish. Don’t panic and read on! Yummy Planet is here to help you out of this situation. How we became experts ès tapas In May 2015, we spent 15 days in Andalusia and went on with a city-trip in Madrid. If you know a little bit about us, you won’t be surprised to learn we’ve tasted a lot of tapas during that time. Take a look at this video and you’ll see what I mean… Moreover, we tasted quite a lot of tapas in Barcelona, on a previous trip. What exactly are tapas? Tapas are small portions of food served with a glass of beer, wine or any other alcoholic drink in Spain. In fact, they can be anything as long as it’s edible. Still, there are some classics that you’ll find in almost any tapas bar in Spain. The ultimate tapas guide Because tapas can literally be any food, this list won’t cover everything you can find in Spain. But I’ll try […]

Coron: Drinking and Diving in the Philippines

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

See what I did there, with the title? Hilarious right? Sometimes I hate myself… We left off as I made it onto a seven-hour ferry from El Nido to Coron in the nick of time… while suffering from a mild hangover due to the prior evening’s birthday festivities. So actually, it wasn’t that bad. Yeah we were packed in there, but there was also plenty of room to sit and read outside, rest my head on a pile of life jackets functioning as a makeshift pillow, and (surprise!) lunch was included. It was a beautiful – and calm, thank god – day out on the ocean. Gotta love spending your birthday in transit! But OH Coron, you were worth it. And I spent my birthday in luxury – because $90 a night in the Philippines will buy you quite a bit of luxury – with a king size bed, hot shower, and HBO Movies on TV. I mean I still didn’t have wifi, but ya win some, ya lose some, right?! I decided to treat myself to two nights in a real hotel with a pool and breakfast included. And then I did what everybody comes to Coron to do… ^ Take this picture.^ […]

From Saranda to Ksamil in Beaches – The End of Albania

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Sorry for the cliffhanger, guys. Things got a little challenging there for a minute – what with all the freelancing and entertaining guests while traveling. I do neglect the blog when I’m feeling less motivated. I’m sorry for being the worst. Look, Albania is awesome. My biggest regret (other than not spending more time there) is that I didn’t write this post sooner and it’s now the end of the summer season, and I may have deprived some people of a tiny source of Internet information for their Balkans travel planning… because there’s not a lot out there on Albania. Because, trust me, this place is exceptional. And it’s still cool in September even when the crowds have died down! When people ask me where I’ve got to return to, Albania is at the top of my list. Still. One year later and I feel like I haven’t delved beneath the enigmatic exterior that is Albania and it’s wonderfully welcoming yet stoic people. There are some places that are easy to love. There are some places with simple logistics and a well-worn tourist trail. And there are some places where you have to convince your travel companion that you’ve gotta […]

You can get a good sandwich almost anywhere, but many say that Florence is home to the world’s greatest sandwiches – or as they’re called in Italy, “panini”. Yummy things to nibble & drink in South Africa

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

For once, I haven’t had the chance to really immerse myself into local food during our trip to South Africa. Shame on me! But I’ve got an excuse: we stayed in remote (eco)lodges with great food options but no real chance to taste South African specialties. And when you’re miles away from civilization, with lions as neighbors, you don’t really have the option to check the local restaurant. Still, we’ve enjoyed some great local snacks and drinks… Pre-dinner drinks & nibbles Biltong Biltong is really a staple food in South Africa. The name literally means “rump strip” (nice uh?). It is in fact a variety of dried, cured meat that you chew as a snack. It’s a bit similar to jerky but never tell a South African it’s the same thing! Biltong is a serious affair. And the ingredients as well as the process to make it are different from the American stuff. In South Africa, you find biltong everywhere: in the supermarket, gas stations… and even in specialized shops. The most common kind is made from beef but you also find ostrich or springbok biltong. I’ve read you can even find shark biltong. To make biltong, people marinate the meat in a vinegar solution. After that, […]

5 rules to order tapas like a local

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

In Spain, eating tapas is way more than just a cheap way to fill your belly. It’s a social ritual and plays an important part in the daily life of the local. There’s even a verb in Spanish to describe this yummy habit: tapear. Let me tell you how to become a master at tapear by following 5 simple rules. Rule nr 1: bring friends And if you’re traveling alone, make some! For this is what tapear truly means: to tour the tapas bars in good company. Rule nr 2: visit more than one place Tapear isn’t something you do in one place. Usually, the evening goes like this: you arrive in a bar you order a drink and one or two tapas (try to order the house specialty) you drink, you eat, you have a good time with your friends. Optional: you repeat step 2. you ask for la cuenta por favor* (*the check, please), you pay you move to the next place and repeat from step 1 You repeat the whole process between 2 and 4 times during the evening. Rule nr 3: order straight away In Southern Spain, the tapas bars become crowded at around 8.30 – 9 pm. At this time, it becomes increasingly difficult to reach the counter and the plates are served […]

Review: Air India Business Class A321 Delhi To Colombo

Review: Air India Business Class A321 Delhi To Colombo

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

After getting off the bus from the remote stand I followed the signage for international transit. Even though I already had a boarding pass, I was told I needed to go to the transit desk and get my boarding pass reprinted.

After that it was time for transit security. The line didn't look that bad -- there were maybe three dozen people in it. The last time I transited Delhi it was a great experience, but that's probably because I was flying Air India first class, and they assigned me an entourage to whisk me through security in a matter of seconds.

This time around I had to wait in line. I don't think I've ever in my life seen such a slow moving line. My frustration wasn't even that I had to wait for an hour, but rather just how damn inefficient the process was. I wish I had a blindfold so I didn't have to watch. They had separate lines for men and women, and while the line for women was fast, I couldn't believe the pace at which they processed men. They took one person at a time, and then they'd put things on the belt, get a full body pat-down, etc.

3 Days in Rome: a Whirlwind Itinerary in the Eternal City

by Ali Garland @ Travel Made Simple

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you certainly can’t experience it all in a day or even 3 days. Maybe just a taste, because come on, part of being in Italy is the food, right? Three days in Rome is enough to see the big sites and have a few decent meals along the […]

The Ultimate One Week Zanzibar Itinerary

by Ashley Fleckenstein @ Ashley Abroad

My one-week trip to Zanzibar was nearly perfect. It ticked all the boxes: history and culture in Stone Town, relaxation in untouristy Jambiani Beach, and beautiful beaches and diving in Nungwi. It had a little bit of everything. Zanzibar was so much more than I expected – it was otherworldly. From the snaking, medina-like streets to […]

The Beaches in Dhërmi, Albania are Amazing!

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Wait… Albania? Easily one of my favorite experiences from the past year and a half was an impromptu trip to the Balkans at the end of the summer. When Western Europe was getting a little harsh on the budget and same-y, the Eastern Bloc countries with their unpretentious vibes and complicated history provided a much-needed reprieve. Especially Albania. There’s incredible scenery, great hospitality, an interesting mix of Islam and Christianity, shockingly good food, and uhhh Albanian beaches are like whoa. At the risk of sounding cheesy and all “I’m out here finding myself,” have you ever been somewhere you just felt instantly comfortable and at ease? That’s how I felt in the little coastal village of Dhërmi. Like I’d returned to a past life. Okay, now we’re getting really heavy. I’ll stop. It was so calm and stunningly gorgeous, and the people were so welcoming and friendly that I genuinely felt like I could just stay there. I’d read, I’d sit on the beach, I’d learn to make sheep’s cheese and bread from the lady who owned the small hotel where we stayed. All that is to say… I’ll have to return. It was the epitome of laid back. And that’s probably due to the fact […]

America’s Top Thanksgiving Getaways With Unforgettable Celebrations

by Meg Bernazzani @ The FlipKey Blog

If you’re itching to fit in one last fall vacation—or searching for a place that’s big enough to host your entire extended family—consider renting a vacation home and enjoying a change of scenery this Thanksgiving.  Top Thanksgiving Getaways Across America With Thanksgiving right around the corner, you’re probably already thinking about digging out your fine china and frantically tidying your home for guests. To save yourself the stress, why not plan a Thanksgiving getaway that’ll allow you to truly enjoy one of the longest holiday weekends of the year? For some inspiration, we’ve spotlighted seven of the most festive Thanksgiving destinations that host a cornucopia of events everyone will love. We know, NYC’s parade is the crowned jewel of Turkey Day events—which is why we didn’t need to include it in our list! Instead, we’re suggesting some other top celebrations across the country you may not have considered. Book a vacation rental for your Thanksgiving getaway, and you won’t have to miss out on any of your Thanksgiving traditions while you’re away. In fact, you might even be inspired to start a few new ones! Prepare a home-cooked meal in your gourmet kitchen, unwind as a family by the outdoor fire pit, or challenge each other to a game of billiards. From sprawling rural retreats to stylish city apartments, there’s plenty to choose from on FlipKey. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with your entire family in tow, here are seven Thanksgiving getaways where you can make the most of your holiday weekend. St. Louis, Missouri Grab your family and inch to the front of the crowd at St. Louis’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. With musical floats, giant helium balloon figures, antique cars, and more, the event is a must-see in November. Even Santa Claus comes to spread some holiday cheer! In addition to its Thanksgiving events lineup, the rapidly growing city offers lots to do. Admire the view from the top of the iconic Gateway Arch, tour the Anheuser Busch factory, or stroll through Forest Park. At the end of the day, unwind in your vacation home, enjoying amenities like a private sauna and multiple family rooms. Parade Details: Ameren Thanksgiving Day Parade See all St. Louis rentals on FlipKey! Plymouth, Massachusetts Thanksgiving is a weekend-long affair in Plymouth, a town best known as the famous landing site of the Mayflower. This charming New England destination is home to America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade—the only historically accurate chronological parade—which breathes life into authentic Americana. Rent a cozy Cape-style home or find a place with panoramic harbor views for an idyllic Thanksgiving getaway. No matter where you stay in Plymouth, you’ll never be far from the festivities! Parade Details: America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration See all Plymouth rentals on FlipKey! Fountain Hills, Arizona For more than 30 years, Fountain Hills has been hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade—referred to locally as the Parada de Los Cerros (Parade of the Hills). As one of the only places in Arizona with an official parade to celebrate the holiday, it tops most lists of Thanksgiving getaways in the Southwest. Another perk of spending Thanksgiving in the desert is the option to dine al fresco on your private patio. With warm temperatures year-round, book a spacious Fountain Hills vacation home to enjoy the upcoming holiday poolside. Parade Details: Parade of the Hills See all Fountain Hills rentals on FlipKey! Charlotte, North Carolina Every November Charlotte buzzes with energy in anticipation of its 70-year-strong Thanksgiving Day Parade. Arrive early to snag a prime spot on the sidewalk before the floats start their colorful crawl down the streets. Prefer to sleep in? No problem! The event is televised locally, so you can watch without having to leave the couch at your Charlotte rental. Other must-see Charlotte attractions during your Thanksgiving getaway include the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Freedom Park. Parade Details: Novant Health Thanksgiving Day Parade See all Charlotte rentals on FlipKey! Philadelphia, Pennsylvania For travelers with the urge to immerse themselves in American history, look no further than Philadelphia. It’s one of the most celebrated cities in America and its storied past is palpable. Translation: it’s the perfect place for Thanksgiving getaways that blend education with fun. Tour the Philadelphia Museum of Art, step inside Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence was signed), or relax in your turn-of-the-century row house rental. Just make sure you keep Thanksgiving morning clear for the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, the oldest of its kind in America. Parade Details: 6ABC Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade See all Philadelphia rentals on FlipKey! Silver Spring, Maryland All of Montgomery County buzzes with anticipation every November for the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, held in downtown Silver Spring. The spirited celebration takes place the Saturday before Thanksgiving and heralds the start of the holiday season. Don’t fret if you’re not in town by then—the event is rerun on television, so you can watch it in the comfort of your Silver Spring vacation home. At just 20 minutes from Washington, DC, it’s an ideal spot for travelers who want access to downtown, without the big city price tag. Parade Details: Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade See all Silver Spring rentals on FlipKey! Detroit, Michigan Don your Thanksgiving-themed costume and kick off your day with the annual Turkey Trot, a road race through downtown Detroit. Often called “the parade before the parade,” the family-friendly event bursts with cheer and is the perfect way to make that second slice of pie less guilt-inducing. Cross the finish line then head to America’s Thanksgiving Day parade, a decades old tradition in Detroit. After an action-packed day, retreat to your spacious Detroit rental for your Thanksgiving meal (and a well-earned nap!). The Sad State Of Service On American Airlines

The Sad State Of Service On American Airlines

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

I just have to briefly vent. I don't want to generalize too much here. US airlines have some fantastic employees, and US airlines have some lousy employees. They're consistently inconsistent. For example, recently I had an American flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong with exceptional service. Over the summer I had a United flight from Frankfurt to Houston with equally great service.

US airlines can be great, and when you point out their product deficiencies, they respond by saying that they can't compare with Gulf carriers, that the playing field isn't level, etc. The irony is that in many ways, US airlines actually have superior inflight products. American's 777 business class is significantly better than Emirates' 777 business class. The seat is better, the wifi is better, etc. Unlike Qatar, Emirates doesn't even offer dine on demand.

What grinds my gears about US airlines isn't the mediocre food or anything of the sort, but rather the defeatist attitude some (though certainly not all) employee take. I spent the past week flying Gulf carriers, and even when you don't have a good crew on one of those airlines, you'd still never experience these kinds of things. On other airlines the default service mentality is "sure, I can do that" rather than "let me think of a reason why I can't do that" (again, this doesn't apply to all flight attendants in the US, but it does apply to more here than in most regions).

15 Most Romantic Cabin Getaways According To Travelers

by Lara Kavanagh @ The FlipKey Blog

Secluded cabin rental for two? Step right this way for tried and tested romantic destinations where love is most definitely in the air. Romantic Cabin Getaways Loved By Travelers Reviews tell us a lot about the kind of vacations a destination is good for. So when we were looking for some of the best places for romantic cabin getaways, we checked what travelers had to say. At FlipKey (part of the TripAdvisor family), we used a special algorithm to analyze every single TripAdvisor review, identifying which locations across America had the highest percentage of reviews mentioning romance. What’s left are some of the top romantic cabin getaways that travelers rave about—each boasting secluded cabin rentals available to book on FlipKey. No matter the season, these inviting destinations make excellent retreats for couples in need of some time away together. There’s no doubt that a cabin makes a pretty romantic setting, whether it’s nestled high up in the mountains or perched on a cliff by the sea. When you book a secluded cabin rental with FlipKey, you get the whole property and its amenities to yourselves, so you can take your morning coffee on a private porch, in a scenic garden, or tucked up in bed with a jaw-dropping view. Here are 15 traveler favorites for romantic cabin getaways, from red-rocked desert towns to pretty lakeside villages. Jenner, California A couple of hours’ drive away from the throng of San Francisco on a rugged stretch of Cali coast is where you’ll find lovely Jenner. This coastal village is ripe for seal-spotting, beach-combing, and uninterrupted ocean-gazing, and it’s one of the quieter spots featured in this list. Peace at last. See all FlipKey rentals in Jenner! Saugatuck, Michigan “This home exceeded our high expectations. First, the view took my breath away; it never got old. The elevation and combination of door walls, windows and screened porch off the back and side of the home provide a treehouse atmosphere, while cozy woodwork and furnishings convey warmth. We spent many hours sitting in the screen porch enjoying the sounds of birds and crickets chirping.” — FlipKey Reviewer On the shores of Lake Michigan stands the small town of Saugatuck. Leave your stresses at the door of your rental—it’s time to relax. You can chill out on Oval Beach, hike across Saugatuck Dunes State Park, or browse the little art galleries in town. Alternatively, you could simply go from cabin to beach to cabin every day, making the most of your time out together. See all FlipKey rentals in Saugatuck! Logan, Ohio Here’s another beautifully quiet place to hole up in a secluded cabin hideaway. When you’re ready to venture out, try a gentle forest walk in Lake Logan State Park or go boating on a lake full of catfish. At nearby Hocking Hills State Park, don’t miss the atmospheric Rock House, Ash Cave, and Cedar Falls. See all FlipKey rentals in Logan! Hood River, Oregon “The house is perfect for a family or a couple looking for a centrally located place to stay with gorgeous views of the Gorge. It’s comfy and walking distance to eateries and local grocery stores. Can’t really ask for more than that. Nicely equipped for our needs along with a garage spot and laundry. We’re already looking at dates for a summer visit so we can enjoy the deck and a wonderful glass of wine.” — FlipKey Reviewer Hood River ticks all the boxes for romantic cabin getaways, with the scenic Columbia River flowing by, plenty of hiking trails for long walks, and picnic stops for undisturbed lunches for two. There are also plenty of good places to eat here, with farm-fresh food lending a truly local touch. See all FlipKey rentals in Hood River! Manitou Springs, Colorado People used to come to Manitou Springs to drink the naturally carbonated mineral water, thought to have healing powers. You can still taste it today, but if you’re here for romance, you’ll probably want to chug along taking in the views from the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Here, the highest cog train in the world will take you up through a romantic landscape of rocky terrain and pine forest, finishing with gorgeous views over the Great Plains. Don’t miss the amazing Manitou Cliff Dwellings, preserved Anasazi homes full of artifacts to explore. See all FlipKey rentals in Manitou Springs! Big Sur, California Not many people, plenty of space, and uninterrupted Pacific views. Sounds pretty romantic to us. Just book your private cabin and you’re all set for the couple’s trip of a lifetime. Driving the coastal road along this breathtaking stretch of California is up there with our all-time favorite activities—do make a stop to snap the famous Bixby Bridge in all its glory. See all FlipKey rentals in Big Sur! Aspen, Colorado “Very gracious family home. We had a wonderful time. This home had everything for amenities.” — FlipKey Reviewer It’s easy to see why so many couples choose Aspen for their romantic cabin getaways. Take a horse and carriage ride, ascend the mountain on the Silver Queen Gondola for awe-inspiring views, or book your places on the Aspen Cooking School’s culinary course for couples. We’re sure your first visit won’t be your last. See all FlipKey rentals in Aspen! Mendocino, California Discover the towering Redwoods, ocean views, and Victorian seaside homes of pretty Mendocino. There are beaches and walking paths to wander at Mendocino Headlands State Park, plus some charming villages to visit in the surrounding area. Just up the road is Fort Bragg, with its glistening Glass Beach and the Skunk Train chugging gently through the forest. See all FlipKey rentals in Mendocino! Dahlonega, Georgia This is gold-rush territory, so you may want to start your visit at the fascinating Dahlonega Gold Museum, before wading into the river to pan for some of the sparkly stuff yourselves. After that, explore the pleasant historic center, which welcomes you in for romantic wanderings among its 19th-century structures. See all FlipKey rentals in Dahlonega! Luray, Virginia “We love it. The yard is huge with 2 types of grills and a fire pit. The view is phenomenal. The interior is beautiful. The owner is very nice and easy to work with.” — FlipKey Reviewer This is the cabin capital of Virginia, so you’re in the right place for a romantic cabin retreat. Luray is set in the spectacular Shenandoah Valley, so you can set off to fish and hike in Shenandoah National Park or paddle on the river. A visit to the atmospheric Luray Caverns is a must, with its lofty caverns and huge natural rock formations, all beautifully lit for visitors. See all FlipKey rentals in Luray! Blowing Rock, North Carolina This area is rich in cozy cabins with glorious views. From spelunking to spa days, there’s plenty to keep couples entertained. Be sure to motor along the Blue Ridge Parkway with the top down for the ultimate romantic drive. Stop off along the way at the curious Blowing Rock itself, which directs the mountain winds upwards. See all FlipKey rentals in Blowing Rock! Stowe, Vermont The mountain resort of Stowe is stunning throughout the seasons, whether you’re here to ski, leaf-peep, or simply escape the daily grind. This is one for the outdoorsy types, so peel yourselves out of your secluded cabin rental and get involved in the season’s activities. Finish up the day with an intimate meal, accompanied by remarkable alpine views, at the Austrian-style Cliff House Restaurant. See all FlipKey rentals in Stowe! Lake George, New York The lake is the focal point of romantic cabin getaways in Lake George, so be sure to board a traditional steamboat for a daytime tour of the shore, or, even better, a romantic dinner cruise when the sun goes down. Take a drive or hike up Prospect Mountain for unbeatable views of the surrounding area, or set off to the Natural Stone Bridge and Caves to see the largest marble cave in the east. See all FlipKey rentals in Lake George! Leavenworth, Washington Leavenworth is utterly charming all year round, with its Bavarian character and warm welcome. Enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides through town in the spring, sleigh rides through the snow in the winter, and wine-tasting sessions whatever the weather. Simply heaven. See all FlipKey rentals in Leavenworth! Sedona, Arizona “We had everything we needed here for a comfy stay and we loved the location just minutes from Bell Rock trail and convenient to attractions, food and whatever you want to do in Sedona. The beds were comfy, the home was stocked with pots and pans and dishes, coffee and tea, plenty of towels, bedding and wifi.” — FlipKey Reviewer Ok, ok, you won’t actually find a wealth of cabin rentals here in sunny Sedona. But this place scored way too highly on the travelers’ romance scale to be left out of this list. Whatever kind of rental you choose, expect a scenic desert town bordered with pine forests and imposing red rock. You can enjoy this striking landscape on a jeep tour, or head out just the two of you to catch some sun and slip down the natural water slide at Slide Rock State Park. See all FlipKey rentals in Sedona!
