5 Must-Eat Foods in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

A walk through Hanoi’s Old Quarter can quite quickly turn into an impromptu food tour thanks to the narrow alleys and bustling streets jam packed with food vendors, each offering up a dazzling variety of local flavors. The Vegan Guide To Staying Healthy On The Road

by Selene @ fork on the road

For backpackers, tourists, or anyone who travels for work, trying exotic new cuisines is one of the best things about travelling. Who wouldn’t be excited to try authentic empanadas in Mexico, steaming-hot street food in Vietnam, or a plate of fresh gnocchi in Italy? But if you don’t eat meat, fish, dairy or eggs, things can be more difficult. Though the vegan movement is growing quickly, in many countries meals still centre around animal products, and the very concept of veganism can be met with bewilderment. I’ve spent the past 15 months travelling through Latin America, Southeast Asia and Australasia, and have written extensively about my search for veggie-friendly food in each country I visit. During my travels I made the switch from vegetarianism...

KOTIÄIDIN NOPEAT: VEGAANINEN SAVUTOFUKIUSAUS

by Hanna @ Hannan soppa

Savutofukiusaus on koko meidän jengin uusi suosikki. Tofukiusauksen reseptin nappasin Vege it! -blogista, josta olen bongannut monta muutakin mainiota skideille maistuvaa reseptiä. Tuplasin tosin peruna-sipulisekoituksen määrän, sillä yksi pussi ei olisi riittänyt meille millään. Kannattaa liittyä myös Vege it! 1 kg peruna-sipulisekoitusta 300 g […]

Shadowed by three dramatic volcanoes, Arequipa’s setting is about as glorious as you can get. Much smaller than Lima and far less touristy than Cusco, Peru’s second-largest city has just as much cultural significance – and arguably  considerably more beauty. Arequipa’s centre gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000, and the city’s vistas, with the El Misti volcano looming behind, are magnificent. The iconic white baroque buildings are made from local white volcanic sillar rock and give the centre a grand and markedly European flavour. The city played a key role in Peru’s gastronomic renaissance and today is home to some of the country’s best restaurants, where you are encouraged to try national favourites such as alpaca and guinea pig, as well as the vast array of potato dishes....

Historic Luxury, Northern Charm: Inside Swinton Park Hotel, Yorkshire

As you drive through wrought-iron gates and catch a first glimpse of this striking ancestral home, complete with ivy-clad turrets and Gothic battlements, it’s easy to imagine you’ve stepped back in time. The building work for this handsome manor house began in the 1600s, although it wasn’t until the Cunliffe-Lister family bought the property in 1882 that Swinton Park began to take the castellated form you see today. Swinton Park opened as a luxury hotel in 2001, and since then it’s been busy carving out a name for itself as Yorkshire’s top country hotel. Hanoi Coffee | About The Best Coffee in Vietnam

by Lê Hoàng @ Hanoi Free Local Tours

Hanoi Coffee Culture I, Hanoi Coffee Culture I.1 Overview of Coffee in Hanoi The coffee was first imported to Hanoi by French during their first colonial exploitation here. With the formation of the French Quarter where the French immigrated, they brought their favorite drink, and Hanoi coffee began to take its first steps on the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake. Following the French invasion at the 1800s, coffee was introduced in Vietnam, but the source of coffee back then was limited therefore it was considered as a luxury good, only the French colonists along with Nguyễn dynasty’s nobles could have […]

Where To Eat Vegan Food In New York City

by Selene @ fork on the road

In recent years, even the most ardent meat-lovers would find it hard to ignore the rise of veganism. The most recent research estimates that six percent of Americans now follow a vegan diet — a staggering increase of 600% in just three years. While the idea that vegans just eat salad prevails among some, the notion that you can eat healthily and deliciously without animal products is catching on. The Big Apple is a great place to discover how versatile a vegan diet can be. So where should you eat vegan food in New York City? Just about anywhere! From the lingering long lines outside the excellent vegan restaurant By Chloe to the prevalence of vegan options on traditional menus, it’s clear that NYC...

HANNAN SOPAN RUOKALISTA 3/52

by Hanna @ Hannan soppa

Herkkuna tarjoilen gluteenittoman version lapsuuden lempparista, vispipuurosta. Vieraslinkki vie tällä kertaa ihastuttavan asennekollegani Juulian Vaimomatskuu-blogiin. Juulia on ihan velho kekkailemaan ja kokkailemaan hurjan siistejä ruokia, kuten vaikkapa hasselbackan kurpitsoja mausteisella härkiksellä. Blogin kuvat saavat kerta toisensa jälkeen huokaisemaan wow. Kannattaa kurkkia myös blogin ”makumatkalla” -arkisto, aivan mieletöntä settiä – ihania reseptejä ja taidolla kerrottuja tarinoita, rakastan Juulian tapaa kirjoittaa! maanantai: Dukkah-paahdettu kukkakaalisalaatti & avokadokastike tiistai: Paistetut vihreät nuudelit keskiviikko: Papu-perunakeitto ja paahdetut ruusukaalit torstai: Vege fried rice (jätä munat pois vegaanisesta versiosta) perjantai: Savuisat jakkihedelmätacot & persimonsalsa lauantai: Lanttuburgerit kidneypapupihveillä sunnuntai: Hasselbackan kurpitsa ja mausteinen härkis viikon herkku: Gluteeniton vispipuuro (vaihda hunaja esim. agavesiirappiin vegaaniseen versioon) — ♥ seuraa Hannan soppaa myös Facebookissa ja Instagramissa! BACK OF THE BIKE FOOD TOUR / SAIGON - Hannan soppa

Hannan soppa

Aloitimme Saigonin herkullisen tuoksuvaan street foodiin tutustumisen motskarin selässä, erittäin paikallisittain siis – mopedeja löytyy kaupungista nimittäin enemmän kuin koko Suomessa on asukkaita! Liikenne on melko kreisiä, mutta taitavat oppaamme puikkelehtivat mopomeressä varsin tottuneesti eikä pelottanut yhtään. Päinvastoin teki todella hyvää nähdä kaoottinen liikenne tästäkin vinkkelistä – tien jalan ylittäminen oli seuraavan päivänä heittämällä helpompaa. Ensimmäinen stoppimme oli erilaisia riisijauhosta tehtyjä lättysiä tarjoileva Bánh Bèo Thanh Nga (45C Kỳ Đồng, District 3). Ravintola on erikoistunut Keski-Vietnamilaisen Huến kaupungin keittiöön. Sitten huristelimme District 10:en, jossa pysähdyimme varsin autenttiselle katuruokakojulle. Ravintolassa on isot akvaariot, jossa elävät rapuset hengailevat ennen soppaan päätymistään. Keitossa oli lisäksi paksuja …

Touring Saigon's Street Food: How To Love Ho Chi Minh City | fork on the road

fork on the road

I didn’t expect to love Ho Chi Minh City as much as I did. More than any other place, Vietnam seems to divide travellers and tourists: they either really love it, or really don’t, and Ho Chi Minh City is often at the forefront of that. Because of this polarisation, I entered the city thinking I probably wouldn’t love it instantly, but perhaps it would grow on me. I was totally wrong. I LOVE Ho Chi Minh City – or Saigon, as everyone still calls it. Forget about it growing on me, it took about five minutes to realise this city was right up our street. On our first night Tom and I arrived late and were tired. We popped out for “just one beer”...

SUITCASE Magazine | City Guide: Cusco, Peru

by Selene @ fork on the road

Deep in a highland valley in the South American Andes is the city of Cusco, Peru’s most popular travel destination. Once the beating heart of the mighty Incan Empire, today Cusco is a launchpad for tourists to explore the historic villages and relics of the Sacred Valley, most notably the “lost” city of Machu Picchu. But while the area surrounding Cusco offers a dizzying array of cultural excursions, treks and outdoor activities, the city itself is a joy to discover. Designed by the Incas in the shape of a puma, at Cusco’s centre is the splendid Plaza de Armas, around which labyrinths of colourful cobbled streets beckon for exploration. This is a city where ancient Andean history interweaves with colonial culture to create some...
