2017 Was The Most Insane Year Of My Life

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

2017 was a big. fucking. year. I uprooted my entire life to have this crazy, once in a lifetime experience traveling the world with Remote Year. I’ve boarded 60 flights, 11 ferries 5 buses and one motorcycle to travel to 18 countries and 45 cities spanning five continents (Antartica, I’m coming to you in 2018 bb). I’ve checked things off of my bucket list that I didn’t even know were on my bucket list, and have enough stories from the last 365 days to fill a lifetime. I’m going to be that annoying 95-year-old woman who’s constantly talking about “that one time when I traveled the world living and working in a different country every month with 65 likeminded individuals,” and I am totally ok with that. I’m not going to lie: Writing this post gave me a lot  of feels. Scrolling through the old pictures and realizing just how much I’ve accomplished — and how much unbelievably cool stuff I’ve gotten to do in the last year — is both pride-inducing and humbling (… I know that’s technically impossible, but I feel how I feel okurrr?). I’m a completely different person today than I was on January 1, 2017. I’ve seen so much of this […]

5 of SAIGON’S BEST HIDDEN COCKTAIL BARS

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a place of surprises, much of them elusive to first-time visitors with just a few days on the ground. Though a bit challenging at first, Ho Chi Minh City eventually became our favorite city in the world and a base for many of our adventures in the Southeast Asian region. It’s also a pretty great place to go out and grab a drink, whether it’s a Monday or Saturday, Saigon’s music venues, breathtaking rooftop bars, and tiny neighborhood spots are buzzing.

Unlike the more world famous, easy-to-find spots of Bangkok and Shanghai, Saigon is a city of tight neighborhoods which unveil themselves only to those intrepid enough to explore the tiniest, faintest lines on the map. Saigon doesn’t have a Times Square or Pudong. It’s a megacity comprised of small, distinct districts and alleys. Perch ... Read More »

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

25 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT SAIGON (HO CHI MINH CITY) - The Hungry Suitcase

When someone embraces a person they love, it manifests on the brain a mappable sensation of electricity that can actually be seen on an MRI scan. Love affects the brain in the same way that stimulants such as alcohol or drugs affect our physiology and physchology. Love, like whiskey, is addictive. And cities, like love, can cause us to be irrational and abandon our plans and direction to return back again and again. There are many cities I love, but there are only two cities in the world that I just can’t quit. They are both sweltering delta cities with a French colonial history. One is at the mouth of the Mississippi and the other at the mouth of the Mekong. This week, I returned to my favorite place in Asia. How do I love thee? I count (and photograph) the ways. 25. ... ‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

“a place around the bend where he could jump off”

Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?

A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

Delicious pork and won ton noodle soup at Mi Thay Nghiep Ky in Vung Tau, Vietnam

If I had to pick my top five noodle soup dishes, won ton noodle soup would definitely make the cut, along with pho, ramen, and bun bo Hue. (I know that’s only four noodle soups—I’m not sure which would be the fifth.) There is something so comforting, savory, and yet so simple about a bowl […]

Remote Year Has Made Me An Expert At Running From My Problems

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

I know that technically, you can’t outrun your problems. I learned that the hard way when I landed in Malaysia last February and my grief over losing my dad didn’t miraculously disappear, and I still had no idea what I was doing with my life or why I felt so lost. Because, as they say, wherever you go, there you are… right? After last month, I’m not so sure. Because even though problems are location independent, a change of scenery can really make a difference. I spent November living in Córdoba, and — spoiler alert — I fucking hated it.  In case you haven’t heard of Córdoba (which, let’s be honest, you definitely haven’t), it’s a small college town in Argentina that’s approximately 10 hours by bus from Buenos Aires. That’s about all you need to know. I had a bad feeling about the city from the moment I arrived — my apartment smelled like mold and garbage and could tell from day one that it was going to be a snooze-fest — and things only went downhill from there. Aside from buying overpriced crop tops that looked like knockoff Limited Too and going for runs in a park littered with […]

11 Things Full-Time Travel Has Made Me Thankful For

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

For most people, celebrating Thanksgiving away from home is weird and depressing. There’s no family, no football and no turkey, and considering I’m currently in South America, it’s 100 degrees outside and there is ne’er a brown leaf in sight. But for me, it’s made me take pause and make me realize just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to spend this holiday so far away from my family (even though I love them, and don’t even mind the fact that my mom burns the turkey almost every year). Living and traveling full time has changed my perspective on a lot of things, and made me realize just how much I have in my life that I have to be grateful for. I’ve never had to worry about having a roof over my head or enough food on the table, let alone that I’m able to live out I am so, so grateful for this entire experience, something that I am fully aware is “once in a lifetime,” and that most people don’t get to spend an entire year living and working around the world. I’m also so, so blessed to have a family (and friends) who have been […]

My Favorite Fashion Finds From All Over The World

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

My name is Zoe Weiner, and I am addicted to foreign artist’s markets. Every time I arrive in a new city, my favorite thing to do is scope out the best places to buy local artisan goods. I’m completely obsessed with finding one-of-a-kind, handmade things that I couldn’t get anywhere else. Plus, I always feel like a really worldly ass hole when people compliment me on what I’m wearing and I get to say “Thanks! I bought it in India for $12.” More than anything, though, I love these pieces because there are stories behind them. Every time I put them on, I get to remember an adventure I had this year, which makes me love wearing them more than anything else I own. Read on for some of my favorite buys from this year, and why they’re all so special to me.   Longyi, Malaysia A “Longyi” is a traditional part of Malaysian dress, and all of the participants in our group were gifted with one when we arrived for our first month in Malaysia. I actually stole this one from James and wore it all over Bali.   Longyi, Malaysia (pt. 2) Ok, this is my Longyi, and here’s […]

48 Hours And A Whole Lotta Wine (And Hangovers) In Mendoza, Argentina

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

Move over, Napa: Menodza is officially the best wine tasting destination in the Americas. Set against the backdrop of the Andes mountain, every picture I took during my weekend in Mendoza looked straight out of a postcard. No joke — I couldn’t put filters on my photos when I put them on Instagram because I was afraid people would think they were fake. I spent two glorious days wine tasting in the Uco Valley (and one equally as amazing day laying out at the pool at the Park Hyatt Mendoza) and can now honestly say that I’m a Malbec aficionado. The wine was so good, that the first time we ordered a bottle of cheap red after the trip, one of my friends declared that she “couldn’t possibly drink it” because her tastebuds had been spoiled. (lol.) Here, a breakdown of everything I did, ate and most importantly, drank during a weekend trip to Mendoza. Bottoms up, everyone! Where We Stayed Hostel Alamo We knew we wouldn’t be spending a whole lot of time in our accommodations (and figured the time we were going to be there, we’d be drunk and PTFO), so we decided to stay at an affordable hostel in the center […]

The 5 Best Night Markets in Taipei

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Taipei is inarguably one of the top street food cities in the world. Taiwan is known as the land of snacks: they have literally invented and re-invented genre after genre of snack food over the years. From pearl tea to fried chicken, the Taiwanese are all about inventing and perfecting the ultimate snack foods. Think Chinese-influenced foods created with the ingenuity and dedication to perfection that (you would think) only the Japanese would bring. While Taipei isn’t quite as famous with local Taiwanese as Tainan for their snack culture, they’ve got it covered and will most likely be your first stop in Taiwan. The sheer volume of street food options available alone are enough but, matched with the quality and price of the food available on the streets, it’s pretty much unbeatable. What I Learned After 10+ Hours In A Chilean Hospital

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

Getting sick while you’re traveling is more than just an inconvenience — it can mean the difference between getting to have a once in a lifetime experience and, well, not getting to have a once in a lifetime experience. Which is why when I woke up on Saturday morning with a sharp pain in my stomach, I literally booted and rallied, popped a pill that said “TAKE FOR TRAVELERS DIARRHEA” in Sharpi eon the bottle, and boarded the bus for Portillo Inca Lagoon. I spent the day in agony, fake wine-tasting (every time I ate or drank anything, the pain got worse) and posing for pictures with the fakest smile I could possibly manage. When I got on the bus for the 2.5 hour ride home, I thought I was going to die. Assuming it was just a bad bout of food poisoning, I went straight to bed when I got home and set an 8am alarm to get up and get ready to go on a 3-day beach vacation with my friends. When I got up to pack, I collapsed — I was in so much pain I could hardly stand up. “I’ll just go and then sleep it off at the AirBnB,” […]

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?

Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »

Where To Eat, Drink And Work In Ho Chi Minh City - Let's Just Zo

Where To Eat, Drink And Work In Ho Chi Minh City - Let's Just Zo

Let's Just Zo

I love Ho Chi Minh City. After spending a month here, I feel like I could actually live in Asia in the long-term. The food is amazing, the city is clean and safe, and the ex-pat and remote working communities are strong and lively. My life in HCMC (as it will be referred to from here on out, because Ho Chi Minh City is annoying to type over and over again and, I imagine, annoying to read) looked pretty much like this: Wake up, go to work at an adorable cafe, go to 5pm Yoga at Yoga Sculpt n Shape  (which actually kind of made me like yoga), eat some sort of delicious Pho/Banh Mi situation, and then either go to bed or go back to work. I was living at a place called The Saigon Mansion, and my apartment was clean and big and I was generally just in love with my life there. It really felt like *home,* even in the short time I was there, which is a really important factor when you’re living out of a suitcase for a year. When it was time to leave HCMC, I was really sad. There were so many places in the city that …

36 Hours, 10,000 Pictures And SO Many Alpacas In Cusco

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

Before living in South America, I (ignorantly) imagined the entire continent to look the way Cusco does: Full of bright colors, old buildings, people selling artisan crafts everywhere. Truth be told, I was mildly shocked to discover that Buenos Aires, Santiago and Lima were nothing like that — that in place of the “traditional” beauty I expected were fullblown cities with high-rises, McDonalds and Starbucks’ on every corner. Arriving in Cusco, though, it felt like I’d stepped back in time. The city, which was the capital of the Incan Empire from the 13th to 16th Century, is so rich with its own unique culture it’s hard to take it all in at once. The streets are filled with women in traditional Peruvian garb, many of them touting baby Alpacas or neon textiles or some other ware that’s wholly unique to the region. Frankly, it’s hard to put into words exactly how I feel about Cusco, other than the fact that it is really, really special. After visiting 50+ different cities this year, I’d go so far as to say this was one of my favorites. I spent 36 hours in Cusco adjust to the altitude prior to hiking Machu Picchu. At 11,152 ft feet, […]

LIVE LIKE A LOCAL: RENT A SHORT-TERM APARTMENT WHILE TRAVELING

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

If you want to experience the true life of a place, experience it like a local: get an apartment in a true neighborhood. Wake up to the sounds of street vendors and garbage trucks. Be recognized with a smile by your local noodle-slinger.

If a city strikes your fancy, rent an apartment for a month and stick around for awhile.

Another advantage of worldwide Internet networking is that it allows us to exchange short-term apartments without going through an agent or company. Check the New York City craigslist sublet page and you’ll find plenty of Parisians happy to exchange their Left Bank apartment for a little temporary stepping stone on the Upper West Side. Though apartment exchanges are rare in Asia, there are plenty of expats and locals alike who will be vacating their adobe and happy to have someone trustworthy in ... Read More »

My Trip To Iguazu Totally Changed My Opinion On Solo Travel

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

I went on a solo trip earlier this year, and promptly decided that traveling alone was *not* for me. What’s the point of doing anything fun if there wasn’t anyone to share it with? Plus, how are you supposed to get any good pictures without a friend to take them for you? Lately, though, I’ve been feeling really, really overwhelmed. My month in Buenos Aires was a whirlwind, and I spent every day and night that I was living there doing something, surrounded by a million people, trying to distract myself from what I was going through. I’m not exaggerating when I say I went out 30 nights in a row, and never spent more than 15-20 minutes by myself. I was also working out like a crazy person, and sleeping 3-4 hours every night. It was exactly what I needed at the time, and I’m really grateful that I got to experience the city in the way that I did, but it was a *lot.* So this month, I’ve decided to take some *me* time to reflect. As it turns out, though, self reflection isn’t all that easy when you’re constantly surrounded by 65 people. So, I booked a flight to […]

I Went On A 5 Day Motorcycle Trip Through Chile And It Was THE BEST

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

When I got a message last week asking if I wanted to go on a 5-day motorcycle trip through Chile, my first thought was literally to laugh out loud. “There is no way I’m doing this,” I told my friends, who also laughed out loud at the thought of me riding through the desert on the back of someone’s motorcycle wearing an actual moto jacket, as opposed to the gold one I bought for myself in Buenos Aires. But the more I thought about it (which, in fairness, was for all of about 15 minutes), the reasons I had for not going became fewer and farther between. When else was I going to get an opportunity like this? How cool would it be to tell my grandkids that I drove through Chile on the back of a motorcycle in my 20’s? Plus, HOW COOL WOULD MY INSTAGRAM CONTENT BE?! “Fuck it,” I responded. “Let’s go.” Cut to 48 hours later (and a lot of deeply concerned texts from my mom asking how many tattoos this motorcycle driver had), and I was cruising through the Chilean desert, thinking “HOW IS THIS MY LIFE?!” Day 1 The first leg of the trip took us 3.5 […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

How I Feel About The Last Month of Remote Year

by Zo @ Let's Just Zo

Is there a such thing as being nostalgic for the present? Because that’s how I felt on New Years Eve, drunk on Pisco and high on life, surrounded by people who were strangers a year ago and who I now consider my family. When the clock struck midnight, I kissed every single person within 10 feet of me, and felt so lucky to get to ring in 2018 with such a huge group of people who I love so, so much. Then we spent the rest of the night dancing on the beach, and all I could think about was how #blessed I was to get to start the year with this band of misfits, and how I never, ever wanted it to end. As the night went on (and on, and on, and on), I willed the sun not to come up because it meant that we were one day closer to Remote Year being over. To be clear, it’s not just New Year’s Eve that has me feeling this type of “I miss the present while I’m still living in it” way: This is how it’s been nonstop lately. At karaoke night in Santiago, riding on the bus on the way […]
