The coolest treehouse in Sri Lanka

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I have always wanted to stay a night up in a treehouse, but coming from ‘the land of all things that can kill you’, I have always been scared away at the thought of geckos crawling into my bed and swarming me (I have frequent nightmares of this happening, crazy, I know…), so I could only ever fantasise about how beautiful it would be to fall asleep and wake up amongst the treetops. Whilst travelling through the cultural centre of Sri Lanka, I decided to find some time to connect back to nature and have a bit of downtime after so many long days of exploring and traveling to and from destinations – Sri Lanka may look small, but trust me, it takes forever to get from point A to point B. When I was researching funky places to stay in Sri Lanka, there were multiple tree houses that popped up as well as an article on the 28 most amazing treehouses in the world, with Sri Lanka having a few ranked in there. It was from then on, that I made it my mission to find the coolest & most authentic looking treehouse so I could tick it off […]

Great Ocean Road: 5 day self drive itinerary

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

The Great Ocean Road has got to be one the most scenic road-trips not just in Australia, but in the whole entire world. I know that’s a huge call, but by the end of this post you will see why. The 243km road hugs the South Coast of Victoria, starting in the surf capital of Australia: Torquay and ending in the small seaside village of Port Fairy. Being just a stone’s throw away from Melbourne, it’s the perfect little add on to your city trip, or long weekend nature getaway. I hired out my first ever campervan (and definitely not my last), got my two best friends in on the deal and hit the road with our Jucy Champ 4 berth camper, also known as Jucy Jay. Note: we called our camper Jucy Jay (just like the pop singer Jessie Jay) and yes we named our campervan…we even made a song dedicated to her and the memories we made – it was pretty special. We decided that the best way to truly embrace the van life was to not book any camp sites in advance and just take each day as it comes. Towards the end of the day we […]

2017: The year of courage & learning to love myself again

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It’s crazy to even think that 2017 has come and gone already. Every year that passes seems to fly by quicker than the last. I have spent a lot of time over the last few days reflecting on the year that’s been and to say that it’s tugged on the heart strings is a huge understatement. The year started off with a typical Sophie moment – quitting my job to channel my happiness and longing for adventure. I jetted off to South East Asia for a month just a week after leaving my job at Flight Centre. It was definitely a top way to start the year off. But when I got back from my travels, everything settled back in and came crashing down before I could even try to fix things. Up until July, I was fighting my own battle with depression. When I was packing up my stuff to move, I read through my journal that I had kept from the first few months. It was so scary to read through and see how unwell I was. I’m so happy to say that I found the light at the end of the tunnel and it was a damn […]

Florida Everglades Open for Business After Hurricane Irma

It was a sad scene to absorb.

Three things that make me very happy are good company, mouth-watering food and a heart racing thrill– and Saigon Food Tours did exactly that. From the get go, I was welcomed by my local tour guide ‘TB’ outside my hostel with so much warmth and excitement that he even managed to steer away my nerves about hopping on the back of a scooter during peak hour traffic in Saigon. I did the ‘Taste of the Night’ tour and opted for the Vegetarian route – which luckily meant that it was one-on-one. Why do you ask why I seem so happy about not being social with other people? Well…it meant that I got to know TB on a more personal level and for moments I felt like I was the presenter of one of those old-school travel shows like Getaway – it was a real VIP moment okay. Most of the tours will usually be private – but if you do pick a popular day they may invite you to join another group or select another time slot/day. The tour started at 5:30pm and during the four hours we went to four different local street food spots and cafes, and at each …

Geckos Adventures: Vietnam Highlights review

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Touring life is pretty damn cool, but I will admit that I didn’t think the highest of it prior to my trip of a life time with Geckos Adventures. When you aren’t a part of a tour or haven’t done one before, you very easily resent the idea and snob everybody off that is waddling together in a group. I mean, are you really ‘solo traveling’ when you are with twenty other people and a tour guide to make sure you are on the 4am train, 30 minutes early with all the confidence that you are going south and not north? But let me tell you, when you join one, you suddenly realise why so many people do decide to tour. You will get hooked on the fun, (almost) stress-free and humbling experiences and memories that you make whilst venturing around with your newly formed, global friends. Why did I choose Geckos Adventures? I could actually afford it. Two of the biggest factors for me when arranging a trip is whether I can afford it (obvious, I know) and whether it’ll be worth the months of ‘sorry I can’t come, I’ve got to save’ explanations to my friends as well […]

I watched the sunrise every day for a week and this is what happened…

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It’s safe to say that there is a definitive divide between people who prefer sunrise over sunset and vice versa. You see, I’m considered one of those crazy people that enjoy waking up when everybody else is having a relationship with their pillow. Watching the sunrise gives me time to think about what I want to achieve and focus on for the day ahead and the added bonus is that I get to watch it over the ocean – the perks of being a Queenslander. As well as it being absolutely mind-blowing (and obviously the best part of the day), it’s almost always guaranteed that there will be less people watching the sunrise than people watching the sunset. It feels so special to be in the minority, let alone have a spot to yourself! Being a true sunrise fan, I decided two years ago that I would wake up every day for one week and watch the day begin. As I now live just a 3-minute drive to the beach and have access to a car, I figured that it would be a brilliant time to tick it off the bucket list. I will admit, doing this in the Australian […]

The ultimate 3 week Sri Lankan travel itinerary

In July 2017 I spent a month exploring the beaches, temples and mountains in Sri Lanka– I had the best time and saw some absolutely amazing places. I feel as though I had an amazing itinerary and would love to share it with you! Before October, the best way to get to Sri Lanka took us three flights, 20 hours and an unexpected stopover in Bali, which we only found out about when we were actually descending into Bali. I don’t mind all too much about long distance travel and going the longer route to save money but now thanks to Sri Lankan airlines, you can fly DIRECT from Melbourne to Colombo. I know that my itinerary is pretty top notch so I am here to share my 3 week Sri Lanka itinerary so you can best utilise your time and get the most out of your travels. Your ultimate guide to climbing Adams Peak

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I write this as I sit out on my private balcony overlooking a sea of tea plantations, listening to the stream trickling below and sipping on some hot tea from a pot that seems bottomless (but seriously, it’s the biggest tea pot I have ever seen, it’s amazing). You are most likely reading this because you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka and either have an adventurous bone or two in your body or can just really appreciate natures goodness. Adams Peak, commonly referred to as Sri Pada i.e. the Sacred Footprint is a 2243m high mountain in the Newara Eliya District in the hill country of Sri Lanka. It has been the site of pilgrimage for more than 1000 years but is very quickly turning into an itinerary must do for nature lovers.  When should I climb Adams Peak? There are two very distinct seasons for climbing Adams Peak with the high season starting on poya day in December and finishing up in May and the off season spanning from May to December. I did the climb in the off season and like all things, there was a big list of pro’s and con’s and I am honestly […]

An exclusive insider into the WORLDS FIRST EVER SAND HOSTEL

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I have had my fair share of staying in hip hostels, quirky air-bnbs and even treehouses all over the world, but I don’t think anything could ever compare to what I got to experience last night…a stay at the world’s first ever SAND HOSTEL. Now if that’s not enough to completely blow your minds, the pop up Sand Hostel is located on a real beach, in one of the most beautiful areas in Australia, is 100% liveable and is even licenced – which is a big deal for us Aussies with all of the council regulations. Thanks to Hostelworld, I was lucky enough to be one of the very first guests to call it home for the night and I am here to share with you an exclusive insider into what the creative pop up is all about and how you can get involved. Commissioned as a joint project by Hostelworld, Gold Coast Tourism, Lively Productions and put to real life by product designer Jon Dowding and sand sculptor extraordinaire Dennis Masoud – the Sand Hostel is what dreams are made of and will certainly make you re-think hostel life.
