Berlin Street Guides – Ryckestraße in Prenzlauer Berg

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

We love Berlin’s unique neighbourhoods – there are so many interesting streets to explore across the city. One of our favourites is Rykestraße, a wide, tree-lined street in Berlin’s Prenzlauer district. Not only is this street FULL of things to keep you busy should you find yourself hungry or wanting to do a bit of shopping, it also has two very notable sights: the Wasserturm Prenzlauer Berg, and the Rykestraße Synagogue. Photo by Natalie Lunt. Rykestraße runs from the Wasserturm on the corner of Knaackstraße to Danziger Straße. It’s not a particularly long street for Berlin, but there’s more than enough to see and do. The synagogue is Germany’s largest and the second biggest Jewish place of worship in Europe. The building has been around since 1904, surviving the Second World War relatively undamaged. Today it can hold up to 2000 worshippers inside. It’s worth taking a look at its beautiful interior and tours are available during the week in both English and German. Photo from Jüdische Gemeinde zu Berlin’s Website. The Wasserturm is Berlin’s oldest water tower, and was in use until 1952. An adjacent machine hall was actually the first concentration camp in Nazi Germany, though this building [...]

Gordon Ramsay’s Pork Chops with Sweet and Sour Peppers

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

A Keto version of the legendary Gordon Ramsay recipe If it isn’t obvious already, I love to eat good food and I enjoy cooking good food too. Over the years many chefs have inspired me and one of those has been Gordon Ramsay. While he might be famous more for his cursing, he’s not one of the best chefs in the world for nothing. His pork chops with sweet and sour peppers is the stuff of legends. This recipe is extremely simple, it’s literally just a few ingredients of top quality, treated perfectly for maximum flavour. I hope I’ve done Gordon proud and I hope you folks enjoy this recipe. A whole lot of porky goodness Since I didn’t get the perfect bone in pork chops, I filleted mine and cooked up just the eye or the loin part of it. I plan to use the bones to make a stock and at the end I cooked up the other meat trimmings for a tasty snack. Couple of tips to keep in mind is to cut the fat side of the pork chop with the knife so it doesn’t curl up when cooking and it cooks more evenly. Also once […]

Keto Chicken Cake

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

Inspired by a Tasty Video I made this savoury meat cake I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with work recently, I’ve got a brand new album I’m working on and I’ve got this really interesting project (which I can’t reveal) that has me rather busy and so I haven’t uploaded a new recipe in a few days and I was feeling the pressure to get a video done. A friend of mine posted this Tasty video on my Facebook timeline and it inspired me to make a keto version. The original recipe had a stuffing with corn and there was breadcrumbs in the mince, this mostly from what I could make out since the video is in Portuguese. So for my Keto version I decided to build it up with some delicious sauteed spinach, mushrooms, olives and spring onions. I also decided to go with a different set of seasoning for the mince using paprika, cayenne, black pepper and a blend of dried herbs called ‘Italian Seasoning’. I also decided to not speak during the cooking and give you folks another silent episode, if you consider death metal to fall in the silence category.   How to make this cake all […]

Keto Hummus

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

Cauliflower is the new potato As a glorified home cook (not a chef) I can safely say that potato is one of the most versatile foods on the planet. You can mash it, fry it, sautee it, boil it, bake it etc, you get the idea. What has potato got to do with Keto? It’s off the menu. Well I’m here to say Cauliflower is the new Potato. It’s not a food I ate much off in my life, in fact I think I quite disliked it. Fast forward to 2015 when I started my Keto journey and cauliflower became my saviour. I think there is nothing more versatile than cauliflower. I’ve made a cauliflower pizza, used it to replace mashed potatoes in Shepherd’s pie and even turned it into cauliflower upma. Safe to say, it’s the new potato. But what’s that got to do with hummus? Well cauliflower is the perfect replacement for chick peas to make an incredible keto hummus, or cauliflower hummus. Anyway enough jibber jabber. Enjoy the video. Cauliflower Hummus While I made this in the food processor in the video, I did make a test batch in my Nutri-bullet the day before. The way the […]

The hidden treasures of Berlin’s Courthouses

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

Berlin is full of amazing architecture and sights, some well-known and some, as the tour guides would have you believe, “off the beaten path”. Most of the latter are anything but, although as long as people buy it, that’s ok. But the city has another treasure hidden in plain sight: Berlin’s Courthouses. Amtsgericht Wedding. Photo by Sascha Möllering. Berliners can be a bit blasé about their city. They might walk past these fortresses of justice every day without ever realising what lies behind their closed doors. If you ask them as a tourist or just someone with a little bit of curiosity they’ll probably say something along the lines of “This? Nothing important, just a courthouse”.  And if you finally find yourself in a situation where it’s unavoidable to go inside, there is usually something more sinister going on than an architectural tour of the city, like divorce or imperfect waste separation. Which is a shame really. So I went out to explore this overlooked architectural genre. In a way, Berlin’s courthouses are all pretty alike. They’re all big and menacing with huge columned porticos and an entrance hall that’s supposed to make you feel small and insignificant in the [...]

Neighborhood Guides – Berlin City West

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

City West is booming again. The surroundings of Tauentzienstrasse – and its extension Kurfürstendamm – are having a 3rd rebirth. The area started developing in the Wilhelmine era, when it was not yet part of Berlin, after the construction of the train station at the Zoological Garden, which helped Berlin expand its boundaries to the west. It was conceived as a commercial and entertainment center of the German Empire’s capital, in addition to the historical centre in Mitte. It was led by the Kurfürstendamm transformation into a boulevard and the opening of the now centenarians department store KaDeWe and the Theater des Westens, two of the most emblematic constructions of that time. Foto:KSP Jürgen Engel Architektenhttps://www.berliner-zeitung.de/1546538 During the Weimar Republic, the area was incorporated to Berlin and was synonymous of the decadent luxury of the Golden Twenties. After the bombardments during the Second World War, the center of West Berlin lived its second  life and it was considered as a window of the progress and the “economic miracle” of West Germany in the 1960s. From 1961 to 1989, when the city was divided by the Wall, the area was developed to be the counterpart to the old town center in [...]

Keto Chicken Parmesan

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

Bringing back the comfort into Keto food Chicken Parmesan is a staple and a comfort food for many people. In my earlier videos I’ve shown you how to make my Keto marinara sauce as well as Keto bread crumbs. Putting these two together you can definitely whip up something close to the original. My plan however was to reinvent it a bit and also make an easy, meal for one style dish that didn’t require you to make bread crumbs and have the marinara sauce lying around. This is something you can whip up in about 15-20 minutes with just a few simple ingredients lying around. Reinventing the classic Chicken Parmesan So for my version of Keto Chicken Parmesan I decided to use fresh parsley and Parmesan cheese to create a ‘Keto bread crumb’. I also decided to create a tomato sauce in the same pan in about 5-6 minutes. The sauce itself is packed full of flavour and is pretty low on carbs since it’s just tomatoes with some garlic and dried seasoning and of course fresh basil to finish with. All in all I think we’ve got ourselves a winner winner, chicken dinner. Nutrition Info (Per serving) Calories: […]

My favorite Restaurants in Berlin right now

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

First, a disclaimer: This is a list of my favorite restaurants in Berlin right now. I am sure there are a million other great restaurants that are worth a visit. My goal with this article is to give you a shortlist of where I like to eat these days. These restaurants have proven to deliver delicious food and satisfying experience, CONSISTENTLY. Yes, chefs and staff may have bad days, but I guarantee that these places have way more amazing days than otherwise. You may be disappointed, as I am not going to tell you about the *newest* restaurants in Berlin. Most of the places I am recommending have been around for a while. I catch myself going back and that, I think, is a good sign. I want to personally give you solid options that I truly love and are here to stay (I certainly hope so).  Take it as a recommendation between friends. I have also mostly selected restaurants that are not going to break your bank. They range from my trusted Turkish joint, where you can eat for 10 bucks to my favorite mid-range restaurants, where you can get an amazing dinner for around 60-70 Euros. If you [...]

AWESOME BERLIN

Now that we have given you quite a few tips on how to enjoy Berlin for free – Part I, we are delighted to share our second article on how to enjoy Berlin on a shoestring budget. Let’s start this article with tips for animal lovers! If hanging out with animals is your thing, you will be delighted to explore the urban farms spread all over Berlin. They can also be a Zoo alternative for the kids. Our favorite is open daily and it is called Domäne Dahlem. It houses an agricultural open-air museum, where you can get in touch with a rural way of life and forget that you are in the middle of the city! At the Hasenheide Park, there is an enclosed area for goats, sheep and turkeys, with some exotic animals, like llamas and camels. In the south of Berlin, the Gemeindepark Lankwitz has also an enclosed area with deer! And slightly out of town, the Tierhof Alt-Marzahn takes you back to the rural life of the early 20th century, with its lovely windmill and village vibes! Domäane Dahlem. Wikimedia Commons. Berlin’s Best Christmas Markets – 2017

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

BERLIN BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS GUIDE 2017 is out! From the last weekend in November until right after Christmas the city is “inundated” with some of the most magical and enchanting Christmas markets. In fact, there are more than 60 of those throughout the city. Locals gather together to celebrate and get cozy while drinking mulled wine, beer and eating some of the most yummy German street food. Another favorite activity at Christmas Markets is, of course, shopping for hand made Christmas decorations and trinkets. Several vocal and musical groups provide for a fun entertainment program. Not all Christmas markets are alike, so it is totally worth exploring a few during the season. Some of them are more exclusive and posh. Others are very popular and feel almost like Carnival fairs. Some are located in stunning landmarks like Charlottenburg Palace, Gendarmentmarkt Square or in little old neighborhood/village centers. Others take place on city’s open spaces, old factories and squares. The past couple of years has seen a surge of “specialty” Christmas markets and they range from Greek, Japanese, Vegan, you name it. These, even if fun,  tend to feel less “Christmassy” as the traditional ones, so we decided this year to focus on the ones [...]

Keto Fish Cake

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

A crowd pleasing appetizer and great keto snack When I first made my keto bread crumbs, one of the dishes I cooked up were these fish cakes. They were an instant hit with my wife, Deepti and she insisted that I make them on the show. Of course being my usual self I got distracted and forgot about them. My local fish monger recently showed up with some delicious fillets of a fish called ‘Kapi’. I still have no idea what fish it actually is, I just know the local name and I know that it’s a flaky white fish, it’s almost like salmon. So for this recipe you can pretty much use any fish that you like, I’d recommend a nice flaky white fish. I think salmon would work well as might a cod or haddock and I think you might even enjoy this recipe with canned tuna. Not Fish? What else can we use? This recipe is great to make a spicy crab cake as well but if you want a more traditional American style recipe, try my original crab cakes, you can replace the regular breadcrumbs with our keto bread crumbs now. If seafood isn’t your thing this […]

Ordering (and actually receiving) your packages in Berlin

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – for some. For others, the Christmas season can be a real headache, particularly when living away from your home country. Receiving packages from loved ones is of course a nice treat, and ordering the things you like online from familiar shops you know and love can cure any homesickness for a short while. But, living as an expat in a city like Berlin, you’re likely to be receiving more items on average than the locals do, and that means waiting for multiple deliveries around this time of year. We thought it might be a good idea to give you a heads up about situations that often come up so you can plan in advance and avoid the hassle. In fact, we were super happy when our friends at Paypal invited us to collaborate this winter by giving you some understanding of the challenges of shopping online and actually receiving your packages in Berlin. Plus there is a cool tip in the end of this article…if you decide, after all, to return your packages. Experiences can include: racing to the intercom to answer the buzzer in a VERY quick fashion before the [...]

Berlin’s tourist traps and how to avoid them

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

Cool, amazing, cheap, creative, diverse, unforgettable… All these adjectives can certainly be used to qualify how vibrant and exciting a visit or a long stay in Berlin can be. The German capital has countless attractions, sights and landmarks to keep you busy any time of the year. However, like in every big city, some places can be real money-greedy lures and worth skipping. Let’s be honest: they do not deserve even a peek! So, if you want to take the best of your “Berlin experience”, we selected some of the touristic places you can avoid while visiting our lovely city. We also propose at least one trap-free alternative for each one of them. Here are Berlin’s tourist traps and how to avoid them!   Taking a selfie at Checkpoint Charlie. Checkpoint Charlie takes the cake as the mother-of-all-tourist-traps! Today, everything about this historical site is fake: the guardhouse standing there is a replica, the soldiers wearing U.S. Army uniform are actors and even the picture of the so-called Charlie officer is a trickery. ALSO…for the record…the name of the checkpoint (the real one that no longer exists) used by foreigners and diplomats during the Cold War era, was taken from the [...]

Keto Basics – How to calculate your Keto Macros

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

How to get started on the Keto diet – Calculate your calories and macros I’m constantly asked by people ‘how do I start the Keto diet?’ or ‘How do I know and calculate my macros’ and other basic questions. Even though I’m primarily a recipe resource for those on the diet, I figured it made sense to do a series of Keto Basics or Keto 101 videos. This is going to be me, taking you by the hand, step by step and helping you get started on your Keto journey. So over the course of 4 weeks and over 4 videos I will try and cover the basics of starting out and give you enough information that you can continue the journey on your own. The Keto Calculator So the first thing you need to do on the Keto diet is to calculate your calorie intake and macro nutrient requirements. Once you have watched the video you can visit either ruled.me calculator or the Keto calculator that I use, even my friends at Keto Connect have one here.  Calculate your requirements and get started.  For weight loss you are going to want an overall calorie deficit and if you are just […]

Best tea houses and tea shops in Berlin

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

We all know that the coffee game is strong in Berlin. The third wave craft coffee scene doesn’t stop developing, with newcomers and established cafés opening second, third addresses – and even their own roasteries. Coffee lovers are certainly delighted with the variety of good quality places they can find in Berlin. But what about tea lovers? Indeed, the tea scene is not as big, but there are some tea houses and tea shops that are definitely worth a visit if you are “a tea kind of person”. It does not matter if you like the British tradition or the Japanese tea ceremony. There is always a pleasant tea house waiting for you in Berlin. We selected five of the best tea houses and shops in town. Enjoy!   Tea houses:   Tee Salon Iki: It is definitely the paradise on Earth for herbal tea lovers! At this Greek tea house and shop, you will find a great selection of herbal and rare mountain tea options. We dare say that this is the best place to enjoy tea in Berlin! Berlin for free – part I

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It is a fact: Berlin is still one of the top budget destinations in Europe. The German capital has a lot to offer with its touching history, diverse neighborhoods, affordable food and accommodation options. Not to mention the infinite nightlife choices. Although prices have consistently risen in the last years (especially for the locals), Berlin has a plethora of activities and attractions that are totally free of charge! So it was only natural that we dedicated some time to give you tips for enjoying Berlin for free!  In fact, there are so many free-of-charge activities that we decided to publish this article in two parts! Make sure to read them both before deciding where to spend your time! Find “Berlin for free – part II” here! Most of the places are more enjoyable in the warmer seasons, when people spend their spare time in the parks and lakes all over the city and take advantage of the late sunsets. However, in the colder months, Berlin offers plenty of nice indoor activities as well. The first and most basic thing you will need is to maintain high levels of nutrients in your body (also known as getting food). And in Berlin you [...]

Keto Omurice

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

A Japanese Omelet Rice Dish If you are a food lover you’ve probably seen the Omurice video that has been doing the rounds on social media. It’s absolutely mesmerizing how chef Moto Kichi makes that omelet which goes over the fried rice and when he cuts it then it just oozes over the rice and he pours gravy over it all. It’s probably taken years of practice to perfect the art of making Omurice the way chef Moto Kichi makes it, so for all us home cooks there is an easier way. Watch the video and find out. Tomato Ketchup Fried Rice Wait what? Tomato Ketchup in a fried rice? Yes indeed. So Omurice is a ‘western’ style Japanese dish, I mistakenly said ‘American’ in the video. The fried rice is basically tomato flavoured and is made originally using ketchup. Since most ketchup has tons of sugar in it we’re going to make ours Keto friendly by using puree and seasoning it with garlic, soya sauce, vinegar and everything else that goes into the fried rice. Anyway this is an excellent dish and if you like egg and Japanese food try my recipe for Oyakodon. In the macros below I have […]

Keto Basics – How to log your calories and macros using MFP

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

Setting up and using Myfitnesspal It’s pretty simple to set up and use the MFP app or website to log your calories and macros. The first thing you need is a kitchen or a food scale. Then all it takes is signing up on the website and watching my video on how to set up your account and start logging the food you eat. I might have inflated some figures regarding a hamburger at the Hard Rock Cafe but you will get the idea. I personally think that logging your calories and macros will help you with your Keto weight loss and help you be more aware of the food you eat and what the macros are like. Good luck! Net carbs and browser extensions On keto we like to count ‘net carbs’ and not total carbs. Our body doesn’t really process fiber (which is a part of total carbs) and hence when we subtract the fiber from the total carbs we get ‘net carbs’. Now on MFP you have to manually calculate your net carbs at the end of the day. If you prefer to not do that there are a couple of browser scripts that can do that […]

Keto Meat Sauce | Keto Bolognese

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

From Keto meat balls to Keto meat sauce My previous recipe was a delicious Keto Spaghetti and Meat balls recipe where I used ground beef and ground pork as my choice of protein for the meat balls. Since I purchased 1/2 kg packets and I used half of each meat, I had some left over. I also had some of those canned tomatoes. It was like the ingredients aligned and I knew I had to create the ultimate Keto Meat Sauce/Bolognese/Ragu. I watched a bunch of videos and figured out the subtle differences between a Bolognese and a Ragu. They come from different parts of Italy, one uses white wine, the other red and they are eaten with different kinds of pasta. After much consideration I realized that the Keto version of both these incredible Italian sauces would be pretty much the same. So give it a try, it’s great to cook in a big batch as it freezes really well. You can use it in many ways, perhaps just poured over some zucchini noodles or cauliflower rice, maybe make a lasagna with it or maybe just substitute it for the marinara sauce in my eggplant Parmesan or eggplant involtini […]

Keto Spaghetti and Meatballs

by Sahil Makhija @ Headbanger's Kitchen – Keto All The Way!

Where squid and spaghetti unite I’ve got the ultimate low carb/keto spaghetti and meatballs and it doesn’t involve a zucchini and a spiralizer. We’re making squoodles or squaghetti which are basically noodles/spaghetti made using squid. I first made something similar and got the idea for it from my pesto calamari recipe and realized it would work great in this recipe as well. I decided to make a nice small 2 person serving of this recipe and made a nice thick reduced tomato sauce so that it would adhere to the squoodles and also I cooked the squid in the tomato sauce so that all the flavours meld into each other. Everything is cooked in the same pan so it’s really a one pot dish. Anyway enough jibber jabber, enjoy the video. The details are in the cooking Let’s talk about the meatballs first. I used 50% pork and 50% beef for my recipe, you can use pretty much any meat you like including chicken or ground turkey, just remember cooking time varies for each meat. I also used lean beef because that is the only kind of ground beef available in India, if you can find beef with a higher fat […]
