Bún Thang – Vietnamese Noodle Soup with Chicken, Pork, & Egg

by Huy @ HungryHuy.com

What Is Bún Thang? My knowledge of the Vietnamese language is about on par with my grandma’s English, so this gives us lots of opportunities to learn from each other. She watches Viet news and Korean dramas which have a surprising amount of English in them. The latest term I explained to her was “poker face” hah! […]

The Nanjinger

Given their history, it seems a little odd that French-Vietnamese restuarants are not more widespread. Nanjing can think itself lucky to have 1850 in the Nanjing International Center (same building as The Westin Nanjing). Bánh Xèo – Savory Vietnamese Crêpes

by Huy @ HungryHuy.com

Bánh xèo seems to be designed to be eaten as a family. The batter, filling ingredients, and veggies aren’t complicated to prepare, but they don’t make sense to be bought or made to be eaten by yourself. You don’t just buy 1/4 pound of pork, 8 shrimps, or buy 1/4 head of lettuce. You kind […]

Vietnamese Banana, Coconut & Tapioca Dessert (Chè Chuối)

by Huy @ HungryHuy.com

Chè chuối is a warm, Vietnamese pudding-like dessert featuring bananas and rich coconut cream. You can easily make this at home in less than an hour! Chè in Vietnamese, refers to sweet desserts which are liquid such as drinks, pudding, or even types of ‘soup.’ So chè chuối you could say is a type of pudding, made of coconut […]

Pork Belly Recipe for Bánh Mì (Vietnamese Sandwiches)

by Huy @ HungryHuy.com

At Vietnamese sandwich shops, you’ll find a dizzying number of meat options like grilled chicken, grilled beef, sardines, and even some Chinese influenced options like xíu mại. However, with Vietnamese sandwiches, pork seems to be king–you’ll always see pork options like chả lụa (meat loaf), thịt nướng (grilled pork), nem nướng (ground & grilled pork), bì […]

Bún Bò Huế Recipe – Spicy Beef & Pork Noodle Soup

by Huy @ HungryHuy.com

Bún bò Huế is a hidden Vietnamese gem that has yet to “make it” in mainstream American cuisine. It’s a rich and spicy soup with deep layers of flavor. This Central Vietnamese soup is paired with tender slices of beef and pork, then topped with lots of fresh herbs. Phở has made its way in and has grown popular quickly, so why […]

For years, there was a Shakey's on Westminster Avenue and Taft Street, where it dead-ends into a river bed in Garden Grove. It was one of the older Shakey's in Orange County, as was obvious from the Kennedy-era font spelling out "Shakey's Pizza Parlor & Ye Public House" on the...

Le Colonial charts a course back on top of SF dining scene

Le Colonial charts a course back on top of SF dining scene

San Francisco Chronicle

A friend recalled that the room used to be the Captain’s Cabin when the space was Trader Vic’s, which closed in 1994 and became Le Colonial 19 years ago. To enter the restaurant, tucked away on Cosmo Place, diners climb a flight of stairs and walk across a glass-covered bridge lined with wicker chairs and tables. [...] on this evening the dining room was nearly empty, and we looked over a sea of starched white tablecloths, gleaming steamed wine glasses and whirling fans. The appetizer platter ($28 for two, and $14 for each additional person) was much better than the one I had at the popular Tamarine in Palo Alto, the subject of my Update review last week. The platter consisted of sesame-crusted barbecue ribs that struggled to stay on the bone, three kinds of crispy and soft rolls, and a lettuce cup filled with boldly seasoned tuna tartare served with shrimp chips. The green papaya salad ($13) in a sweet-and-sour dressing was spooned into a purple banana blossom, then garnished with a bouquet of basil and three skewers of tamarind-glazed prawns. Main courses are generous, including the signature sea bass ($33) wrapped in banana leaves with sweet potato noodles, shiitake mushrooms and oven-roasted tomatoes with a dice of seasoned papaya over the top — a combination that had a pleasant, but not overpowering, sweetness. Nine slices of ginger-marinated pork tenderloin are fanned around a medley of pineapple, cherry tomatoes and other vegetables; slices of lemongrass-roasted chicken ($24) are accompanied by fingerling potatoes and a stewy medley of fresh soy beans, snap peas and mushrooms. Called Pot au Pho ($28), it features crispy noodles that serve as a bed for squash, turnips, pearl onions, meat from oxtail and short ribs, shaved radishes and a handful of herbs. The waiter brings a clear glass teapot and pours on a ginger-scented broth; on the side is a plate that holds a gooey blend of oxtail meat and bone marrow that can be spooned in to further enrich the broth. Another favorite is the vegetarian coconut curry ($18) with tofu, eggplant, potatoes, onions and mushrooms. The chefs have also turned their attention to desserts: A cake made from dozens of layers of crepes ($10) served with citrus cream; a floating island ($10) flavored with passion fruit in a pool of crème anglaise; and caramelized bananas ($10) with cassava cake and chocolate peanut butter and ginger ice cream.

French-Vietnamese a unique dinner combination

French-Vietnamese a unique dinner combination

Connecticut Post

On that count, it helps to have the unique offerings delivered at Can Tiin, which opened last month and serves French-Vietnamese food at 269 Fairfield Ave., part of the Bijou Square development. With offerings like a spicy baby octopus stir fry and a sweet chili pork belly steam bun, the menu at Can Tiin (pronounced “canteen”) is unlike anything else in town — or the region. “What we’re doing is taking French techniques and precision and smashing it head on into the fun, fresh ingredients in Vietnamese food,” Lalumiere said. The lunch menu features items from $6 up to about $14, with the dinner menu slightly more expensive. Lalumiere has also been involved with NEAT coffee shops of Darien and Westport, and is the founder of Grayden Cap Hospitality.
