Walking into Zen Plaza is a very bizarre experience. From the outside, the building just looks like it houses the offices of innumerable boring businesses. Which, as it turns out, is exactly what it does house. Although the bottom couple of floors make some sort of claim to be a shopping mall.

And it’s a claim which the place doesn’t manage to pull off. The first thing I noticed was a sign pointing to the basement. So, like Alice going down the rabbit hole, I went down there. But it certainly didn’t lead to a Wonderland – just a grubby basement and a small Family Mart.

Back upstairs I went. I found some half empty clothes shops. A floor or two more followed, and each had a couple more ghost stores and customer-less restaurants. Then I realised that members of the public can’t go any higher, because that’s when the offices start. So I went back downstairs. And left the warped Wonderland.Which was a relief.

Taking decent photographs was also a challenge here, because there’s so little there. Nguyễn Trãi contains a lot of interesting little stores worth exploring. Zen Plaza, however, isn’t one of them. It’s odd, but not in a good way.

[Taipei] Chen San Ding 陳三鼎青蛙鮮奶 has been widely reviewed to be the best bubble milk drink in Taipei. It is located near Gonguan Night Market, an area where the university students typically hang out. What? Not 50嵐, Chun Shui Tang 春水堂, ShareTea, 丸作 which all have more swanky shops and long list of beverages. While Chen San Ding is widely known to serve “bubble tea”, there is no tea in any of its offerings. The signature drink is called 青蛙撞奶, directly transported to “frog knocking against the milk”. No frogs are harmed in the process, as the boba (tapioca pearls) used are thought to resemble frog’s eggs. What you get is a cup of boba pearls, caramel, cold milk, with choice of ice. All drinks are affordable priced at TWD40, which works out to be SGD$1.80. This is what you call cheap and good. Upon holding the cup, I couldn’t help noticing that the bottom was warm while the top layer was cold. That is because the tapioca pearls are cooked on the spot in brown sugar, giving them the soft texture and lingering sweetened and caramalised taste. The pearls were indeed soft, sweet, chewy and you just couldn’t resist having more. Like having a mini-party in your mouth. It felt like a kind of stress-relieving munching on them. The milk itself was not that sweet, which made the entire cup kind of balanced. Other drinks such as Ai Yu Glass Jelly, Brown Sugar Glass Jelly, Lemon with Pearls, Green Bean with Pearls are available, all priced at TWD40. While you cannot choose your sugar level, you can have an option of with or without ice. I went early in the morning, and was faced with a queue of about 5 to 10 people. A Sunday roast is a tradition in the UK & as it had been so long since I had partaken in such a great ritual, I decided to seek out the best for a Sunday roast. The suggestion that kept coming forth was The Tavern in district 7.

As usual, Sunday arrived & off we went to The Tavern for the anticipated roast dinner sensation. On arrival I was informed that today’s roast was lamb for 245,000đ. Without hesitation, my order was placed & my friend ordered the all-day breakfast.

After about 20 minutes 2 large plates crammed with steaming grub arrived at our table. My roast was more than substantial & smelt like a Sunday at home in the UK. The plate was covered with lamb, roast & mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables & a Yorkshire pudding. Mint sauce & gravy were the side-kicks for this dish of splendour.

Not to be out done, the breakfast was also vast with eggs, beans, sausages, hash browns, mushrooms, bacon, toast & butter. At a price of 155,000đ, this is without a shadow of doubt the best I have set eyes on in Asia.

Taste wise, the roast was exactly as it should be with everything properly cooked & served at just the right temperature, a truly pleasing roast that would not be out of place in London’s finest pubs. My only gripe is that the Yorkshire pudding was a rather heavy consistency, this has to be due to the available ingredients in Vietnam. The breakfast was faultless, I sampled some & can vouch for my friends testimonial.

So 4 well earned stars for The Tavern, highly recommended & I shall return in the not too distant future.

Taiwanese Bakery Kazo has opened at Chinatown Point (nearer Hong Lim Food Centre side), offering a selection of Polo Buns, Cream Puffs, and Kazu Kazu which are long choux pastries. The brand is supposedly popular in Taiwan, with a different name of Nichifu 日芙洋菓子 with stores in Taichung. (My Taiwanese friends have never heard of it though.) Having just returned from Taiwan, I was inevitably curious towards Kazo and its products. Offerings included Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50 for 2 scoops, $3.80 for 1), Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00), Crispy Cream Puff ($1.80), Kazu Kazu ($3.50), Cheese Tart ($3.00 for original, $3.20 for chocolate or matcha) and Kazoman Beverages ($3.00 – $3.50). This is like many things trending / instagrammable all in one store. The Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50) could remind some of Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff, in which you could choose from Hokkaido Cream, Matcha, and Chocolate. The former boosted a more crusty puff pastry and creamier quality ice cream, but lacked of that buttery fragrance. While I wished I could eat the Polo with my hands (like how the photos featured). In reality, the ice cream would start dripping within seconds and scooping from the provided plastic box would be cleaner. I was curious how the Kazu Kazu would match up with the famous Japan’s Zaku Zaku – which by the way has opened in Taipei and ‘inspired’ many other versions. This Kazu Kazu had a firmer crusty outer layer which I did not mind, though its filling of Hokkaido cream was mild and pale in comparison. My sense is the Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00) could land up being its most popular item, as local consumers are still fascinated by the idea of flowing lava. Mine was indeed very molten. Located right in the center of the city, Aura is a new restaurant that specializes in Asian fusion food. Opened by the owner of the well-known (and by the way excellent) Ciao Bella and Saffron, Aura has some prestigious older sisters to make proud! So, let me tell you that my expectations were high…

From the moment we entered there we knew we would be well taken care of. The very welcoming staff offered us a complementary glass of sparkling wine and appetizers while waiting for our other friends, which I truly appreciated as a good customer service is not common in Saigon…

The menu is appetizing and you would probably not find anything alike elsewhere in the city. Actually I had the feeling I could not really make a wrong choice… However, on the manager advice I chose a Salmon tartar and a five-spice Salmon while my friends ordered other house’s specialties. From the starters to the mains including drinks, not a single thing went bad, everything was perfect! Even more, they managed to surprise me with a mix of tastes I had never experienced before.

Aura has all the ingredients to become a star on Saigon dinner’s stage and hopefully I will be lucky enough to eat there one more time before coming back to France for a few months. At least it will surely be the first restaurant I will go to when I come back.

A peaceful park

Tân Cảng Park is located in Bình Thạnh District, not far from District 2. It is within fairly reach of Thảo Điền Pearl Building so it is an ideal respite for residents living there.

On approaching the park, I was struck firstly by the quietness of the area then by the abundance of bright flowers. The park is not far from a main road but it does not overly suffer from the constant hum of the traffic. It is also bordered by the Saigon River. In addition to the masses of beautiful flowers, there are tennis courts, tables & ‘huts’ that I presume are used for cooking & serving food. They are quite ingenious looking & would not be out of place on a tropical island. The eating area & general layout suggest that this is a popular spot for wedding receptions and the setting for wedding photographs. Indeed the trees & flowers would undoubtedly provide a lovely back drop for a memorable occasion.

The palm trees, greenery & water features all tended to by devoted gardeners make this a peaceful place that is well worth a visit. This is the type of park that is ideal for laying back & diving into a good book, the tranquillity & lovely grounds will surely enable even the most stressed person to unwind.

Due to its location I would not make a special trip, however if passing by, it certainly deserves a stop & a meander. Five stars for Tân Cảng Park & next time I shall return with a book & a picnic.

Quan An Ngon translates to “a delicious dining place” and it feels like a Marche, marketplace or foodcourt – and a more beautiful and higher-classed one. It brings the classics to the streets. Many visitors enjoy Vietnam’s street food, but may worry about comfort and hygiene. Here, you can see the food prepared right in front of you, or wait in comfort under blossoming trees. Ngon provides a plethora of Vietnamese delicacies from all around the country, and some of the recommended must-haves are the “West Lake” Shrimp Patties, Vietnamese Rice Pancake “Banh Xeo”, “Mi Quang” Tumeric Noodle Soup, “Ngon” Pork Salad and Vermicelli in Soup with Pork Leg and Indian Taro Stem. Banana bar is in a good location in D.7, it is an unimposing enterprise with a few seats available outside. I have ventured here on a few occasions & it has never been overly crowded. I like this as the main reason I go is to take advantage of the free pool table. It’s not a bad table & serves its function well although there are better tables elsewhere.

Price wise, Banana bar is a bit cheaper than alternatives in the city centre, a Heineken is 35,000đ & Beer Saigon is 30,000đ. It has a good range of beverages including some on draft such as Tiger. There is a happy hour starting at 5.30pm when draft beers go as low as 25,000đ. Snacks are also available & during happy hour these are priced as low as 40,000đ.

With regards to décor, it is fair to say that this place needs sprucing up. It just feels like it is lacking some TLC & a general polish or a coat of paint would certainly raise the whole feel of the establishment. The original owner was certainly on the right track but it seems that the current proprietors did not inherit his passion.
The service is fine, nothing great & no reason to complain. The staff are gracious enough & seemed to enjoy gawking as we played pool. That’s fair enough but I did find it rather invasive, although it meant that the replenishment of drinks was never delayed. If you are in the vicinity of the bar & need a drink with the chance of free pool then Banana bar is the place to go.

The Return Of The Taiwanese Bubble Tea craze in Singapore sees old players such as Gong Cha, Singapore brand LiHo and Taiwan’s PlayMade 丸作, all of them with difference in their areas of specialty. Let’s just say Gong Cha is known for their Alisan Milk Foam, LiHo for Cheese drinks (which is now everywhere) and PlayMade 丸作 for their freshly made pearls. Bobii Frutii will be opening its first store in Singapore at The Clementi Mall. I first tried Bobii Frutii 珍珠水果特調 in Taipei which attracted a crowd initially due to its distinct coloured and “Instagram-worthy” layers. Each cup is made using milk, tea and colourful pearls, with no artificial flavourings, man-made essences, creamer or preservatives. The menu in Singapore features a total of 37 drinks in a single cup size and divided into 5 different categories – Tea/Au Lait aka “served with milk” in French ($2.50 – $3.90), Ice Blended ($5.90 – $6.90), Matcha ($4.90 – $6.50), Fruit Tea ($3.90 – $5.90) and Cheese Tea, exclusive to Singapore ($4.50 – $5.90). Pearls aka bobii (Taiwanese slang for tapioca pearls) that are preservative-free come in 3 different flavours: Original ($0.60), Butterfly Pea ($0.90) and Brown Sugar ($0.90), are made in Taiwan and air-flown to Singapore to ensure freshness and consistency. One thing to note, the bobii in each cup is considerably less compared to other competitor brands out there. Apart from their aesthetically pleasing appearance, each of their signature items have funky names that made me wonder what the flavours are, so I gave up on their names and ended up ordering by colours. “Hi, can I have the blue and yellow layered drink?” “Oh, you mean Mermaid’s Tears?” “Ya, that one.” I cried. [Taipei] Instagram has certainly changed consumer habits and how coffee shops keep themselves abreast in a very challenging market. Mr R Drinks 雨田先生手冲饮品吧 at Zhongxiao East Road got into the social media limelight with its very photogenic drinks of Rose Milk and Marsh Milk Tea aka Mr Fox Milk Tea. Sometimes, you get other animals on the drink. Do not discount Mr R Drinks, or “Yu Tian Xian Sheng” as another one of those just riding on the Instagram trend. The barista-owner is serious about his coffee, importing coffee beans from various parts of the world, offering hand-drips and takeaway cups. Until he was overwhelmed with orders. When I visited, the shop had a limited menu of Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10), Rose Milk, Strawberry Milk and Baileys Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Apple Cider (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Umeshu Soda (NT$140, SGD$6.30), Pikachu Soda (NT$65, SGD$2.90) and… Miso Soup (NT$90, SGD$4). As this is a one-man-show operation and lines can be long, every customer is limited to buying just one cup. During peak hours, you have to get a ticket first before queuing. The barista was seen frothing and making his drinks cup by cup, so wait can be rather long. Each cup took at least 5 to 10 minutes to make. I ordered the Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10) only because I was intrigued at the cute fox on the drink. Like how it got there? However, I was slightly disappointed when he handed me a hot frothy cup of milk tea on one hand, a fox on the other enclosed in a plastic packaging, and told me to put it on myself. I see. There wasn’t any 3D latte art involved. For the Rose Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80) drink though, he helped to carefully place the rose ‘biscuit’ made of egg white...

[Taipei] Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice is a well-known eatery (at least among the locals) in Taipei that serves one of the most popular Taiwanese dishes, “Lu Rou Fan” otherwise known as Braised Pork Rice). There are several other places in the Roosevelt Road (Luosifu Lu) neighbourhood that serve braised pork rice, but this hole-in-the-wall dining spot has a reputation for being the best in town. The good news is that this place is budget-friendly with reasonably priced dishes that come in big portions. Keep in mind that there is usually a line in front of Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, especially during lunch hours. Do not expect too much from the interior, as this place is more like casual local eatery than an actual restaurant. The tables are close to one another, and there is a chance that you will have to share a table with other guests. If you are in a hurry, you can always take your food to go. The Braised Pork Rice, priced at NT$30, NT$40, NT$50 (SGD$1.30, SGD$1.80, SGD$2.50) for their small, medium and large bowls, is definitely the signature dish here at Jin Feng in Taipei. The dish is served with a large amount of rice and topped off with a slice of bitter melon and braised pork. One thing to note is that while Singaporeans are used to bowls with loads of meat with less rice. The reverse seems to apply to many Lu Rou Fan stalls in Taiwan where there is very little meat in contrast to rice. I also noticed that other restaurants that offer this dish tend to serve it with more fat than meat, which is not the case here. SBCD Korean Tofu House – Korean Soontofu Restaurant Offers NEW Unagi (Jang-Eo) Dishes, Starting from $5.90

The one Korean dish that I enjoy for the level of comfort it brings is the Soontofu, the soft tofu stew with ingredients such as seafood and vegetables in a spicy broth. “Soon” in Korean means “soft”. SBCD Korean Tofu House is one of the few Soontofu specialty restaurants in Singapore, with branches at Tanjong Pagar Centre and a newly opened outlet at Millenia Walk. The Millenia Walk branch was HUGE (at least in Singapore’s context), with spacious interior, tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and open kitchen concept where you can observe the team of chefs preparing the soups. Don’t have to worry smelling like Korean stew as you walk out as the space is ventilated enough. One important highlight: At the back of the Korean restaurant is where the soft and silken tofu is made FRESH daily. The tofu you are eating is made right in the morning. The chefs from SBCD use special soybeans imported from Paju, South Korea. The area is said to be close to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and contains the freshest-tasting produce due to the untouched nature. Surprise, surprise. The Korean restaurant has also introduced NEW Jang-Eo (장어) dishes – fresh water eel imported from Korea. While the Jang-Eo is popular during the hot summer days in Korea, you seldom see it in Singapore, at least not yet. The NEW menu will comprise of 4 new Jang-Eo dishes including three under the dine-in menu and one for takeaway. Here are the food items you can expect: Unagi Main on Hotplate ($19.90++, with Soju $29.80++) The Koreans love their Jang-Eo – freshwater eel marinated in novelty sauces, with savoury and delicate taste. It was quite a journey to locate Purist Patisserie, for it was smack right in the middle of a Kovan private housing estate, with no direct train or bus services. Situated at the end of shop houses of The Promenade @ Pelikat, it may be easy to overlook the shop if not for its bright pink interior and rose gold chandelier which caught my attention. Also note its rather limited opening hours, from Fridays to Sundays noon to 6pm. Not the most ideal location to set up a patisserie, but that does not deters Patissier Joanne from pursuing her dreams and setting up a place of her own to showcase her creations. Joanne’s forte lies in French entremet, which her meticulous crafting skills can be observed from the exquisiteness and aesthetic details of every entremet. But when it comes to taste evaluation, it is usually based on Patissiers’ concept as well as individuals’ preference due to the complexity and various components that go into the dessert. I took a liking to the Cebu Sunrise [$8] which consisted of coconut, mango and jasmine rice. The light coconut mousse was well complemented with sweet mango gelatin fillings and added rice cracker base for that crunch. The most aesthetical pleasing award would go to Fleur ($8), layered with thin waffle biscuit base, raspberry mousse and white chocolate. It was further topped with freeze-dried fruits, popping spheres and edible flowers for elevated appealing factor. I also liked how various components blended well to give an overall tangy note. While I usually love matcha desserts, the Zen Garden ($8) slightly fell short of my expectation. When I first heard about this market, I was excited to visit – Vườn chuối means ‘banana garden’, and I thought that I’d be entering into a world combining The Secret Garden with banana plantations (minus the labour exploitation).

I was quickly put right however, as friends told me that it’s not a garden or particularly related to bananas. It is, however, a market. Disappointed, I went online to see what other people thought about the market, and was met with a tidal wave of positivity – some people even declared it to be Saigon’s best market. My enthusiasm was renewed, so I set off for a snoop around.

If it isn’t Saigon’s best market, it certainly comes pretty close. Housed in a nice building, the market combines all the best bits about other markets – some busy areas, some quiet areas, some pedestrianized areas, some areas with motorbikes whizzing through, some dark areas, some light areas… the list goes on. The stalls, range from nearly looking like real shops, to nearly looking like wandering street sellers. All this diversity and variety – amazing given the market’s relatively small size - makes visiting the market a really fun experience, made even more so by the jovial and helpful people who work in the market.

The stuff for sale is just as varied – ranging from clocks and gold to raw meat and vegetables, via cloth, bakeries, tinned food, health and beauty, etc. etc. One of places to go when you want to by something, but you’re not quite sure what.

[Seoul] When I needed a good coffee recommendation, food blogger Daniel (yeah, same name) from Seoul Eats took me to Coffee Libre 커피리브레at Hong Dae near Hongik University Station. The thing that makes Coffee Libre stand out from other coffee shops in the city is the fact that the owners are dedicated to coffee. This is from sourcing the best coffee beans in the world, and choosing to have different brewing methods. Established in 2012, Coffee Libre 커피리브레 is an independent coffee shop in Seoul with branches in Yeonnam-dong, Yeongdeung-po, Shinsegae, and Myeongdong. The name of the coffee shop comes from the Spanish word “libre”, which translates to Mexican luchador wrestlers. The icon on the cup did remind me of Jack Black’s character from the Mexican-American sports comedy film Nacho Libre. Coffee Libre grinds beans for every single cup of coffee, and they have participated in dozens of coffee-related events in the country. I have been to 3 different branches of Coffee Libre. Hong Dae’s branch has more indie vibes for coffee aficionados; Time Square has a much bigger space and appeals more to the young; while Myeongdong’s outlet is a hidden spot right in the middle of a tourist hub. This small branch of Coffee Libre in Myeongdong boasts a quite unusual location, as it is situated within the Myeong-dong Cathedral complex. Yes, right in front of the famous church. The interior is simple and cozy with several tables and a long bar. Guests can choose to either drink their coffee indoors or take it to go. They are especially known for sourcing their single-origin coffee beans via fair-trade directly, and obtaining highly regarded CoE (Cup of Excellence) beans as well. Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop 陳記專業蚵仔麵線 – Possibly The Best Mee Sua In Taipei

[Taipei] Ah Zong Mian Xian, otherwise known as Ay Chung Rice Noodles 阿宗麵線 used to be my favourite Mee Sua from Taipei. When I say “used to”, it could be as far a decade back when it was crowded, but not flooded with tourists like now. Unfortunately, the standard and consistency was not like in the past as the store gets more commercialised. I was recommended to Chen Ji Mee Sua 陳記專業蚵仔麵線, or Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop. Many call it the “Best Mee Sua in Taipei”, with “original local taste without over promoting”. Mee Sua is a Taiwanese dish that is basically a vermicelli soup included with large pork intestine or oysters. The noodles served with the soup should never fall apart or stick together. At least, this is what the general rule is. Chen Ji Mee Sua looked like an average Taiwanese food stand. No fanciful interior, just a counter where you can order food, and a couple of tables outside the shop. A large bowl大碗is priced at NT$65 (SGD$2.90), smaller bowl大碗at NT$50 (SGD$2.25), with clear vermicelli soup清麵線at NT$35 (SGD$1.60). If you like your pig’s intestines, then you would love the Mee Sua here. I found the pieces extremely soft, tender, and flavourful, and as a friend @eileen_eats_alot described, ”clean unlike some that have strong porky flavour”. I bought both large and small bowls to compare, and found the large bowl to be a lot more generous in ingredients. For the amount of oysters given, this bowl is reasonably priced. The consistency was smooth and thick without being sticky. Tip: Have it plain before adding some chilli and vinegar for more layered taste. I tried about 8 different bowls of Mee Sua in Taipei, this ranks as my top so far. In order to reach...

Tân Định market is a large market selling a vast array of different things, as you’d expect from any market. The outside of the place is lined with food stalls, selling an impressive variety of dishes, so it’s easy to combine a trip here with lunch.

Although the market is a great place to go if you’re in the area or live locally, there’s nothing particularly exciting or exotic about the place – although it is housed in an unusual building with a unique façade – so you do not need add it to your must visit list, or make any special effort to go there.

The really interesting thing about Tân Định market, though, is its history. In the late 19th century, the market (then known as Phú Hòa Market) was one of the most important markets in Northern Saigon. The current building, however, was constructed by the French colonial government in the 1920s – partly to improve hygiene, and partly to increase the state’s revenue. And it is in this unusual building that the market is still housed today (minus the roof, which has been replaced).

So, the market is worth finding out about for general interest, but, despite being a great local place, if you don’t ever find yourself in the area, you’re not actually missing much.

On the 4th level of the rather futuristic looking (like off a Hollywood set) of Marina One lies two glass capsules. One of them contains Wakanui Grill Dining, an 86-seater restaurant which features steak and lamb from New Zealand. Wakanui, a New Zealand term meaning “to canoe over the land of plenty”’ is a grill restaurant concept that showcases the best available meats from the country. Its first outlet opened in Tokyo in 2011, and its success soon meant the opening of its second outlet there, focusing on lamb chops. Therefore, you could also find some Japanese influences in the menu over in Singapore’s outlet. The stars and the essence of the restaurant are therefore the New Zealand Ocean Beef and Wakanui Spring Lamb, which are grilled over Japan-sourced Binchotan charcoal in the centrally-placed, open kitchen. Starters included Neck Clam Soup ($12), Steamed Green Lip New Zealand Mussels ($22), Hot Smoked Salmon ($24), Seasonal Hassun ($32), Kikorangi Blue Cheese Caesar ($22) and Green Salad ($16) I was recommended by the service manager the Wakanui Spring Lamb Chop ($8) as the starter, and it turned out to be quite exceptional. The lamb had intense flavour and retained its natural juiciness, without the usual gaminess lamb would have. In fact, this would count as one of the most tender lamb chops I ever had. The Wakanui Spring Lamb are raised for approximately six months on the lush and highly nutritious spring pastures, with meat then aged for around four weeks until reaching its peak flavour. This process would ensure that the optimum flavour and texture of the lamb can be enjoyed year-round. In terms of the Ocean Beef, there were choices of 21 Days Dry-aged Bone-in-Ribeye ($199 for 1000g), Ribeye Cut ($79 for 350g, $109 for 500g), or Sirloin ($72 for 350g,...

Sugar Miss – Popular Instagrammable Marble Cube Cake And Marble Cheese Cake At Taipei

[Taipei] One of Taipei’s most instagrammable dessert café of late has to be Sugar Miss, with photos of their famed Marble Cube Cake trending in several social media feeds (at least the Chinese ones). The Marble Cube Cakes come with varied fillings of matcha, raspberry and taro, available in very limited quantities. Each is priced about NT$240 – 265 (SGD$10.80 – SGD$11.90), considered on the higher side for Taiwan, though Singaporeans should be used to these prices for cakes. Do note there is a minimum expenditure of NT$200 required for each customer, which should be easily met as long as you get a drink. Reservations are recommended, as the café can get very popular during the weekends. As I arrived about 2pm, there were just 2 Marble Cube Cake left. The décor looked rather “Lady M” – all clean, white with marbled tables, and ironically Lady M Taipei is just located a short distance away with a moderately long queue. The entire vibes felt rather ‘cold’ though, without the extreme friendliness you see at other Taipei café places. [Taipei] Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 is known to be one of the best Taiwanese beef noodle joints in Taipei, well-known for its spicy soup. This two-level restaurant serves up signature Beef Noodles with tender Australian beef and chewy noodles in a flavourful broth, definitively a winner judging by the line in front of this dining establishment. (The other famous shop in the neighbourhood is 老张牛肉麵店 Lao Zhang Beef Noodles.) I went at about 10:45am and there were about 2-3 people in the line. Thinking that it should be okay if I take a stroll around the neighbourhood, I returned at 11:00am only to see about 30 – 40 people in the queue already. Many of them brought along their luggage or entire families. Lesson learnt: Come early. Yong Kang Beef Noodles was founded back in 1963 by Mr. Cheng who originally from Szechuan in China. After he finished his military duties, Mr. Cheng decided to open a small stall at Yong Kang Street and sell beef noodles. The stall became an instant hit and started to attract both locals and people from China who moved here to Taipei City. After Mr. Cheng retired in the 1970s, the place was handed over to his protégé, Mr. Luo who is the current owner. As for the interior, it has not much changed over the years. There are dozens of tables and they are usually packed with customers. You will also see the counter with a menu to choose from. There is also a tourist-friendly English and Japanese menu with photos. Most of the tables are round and can accommodate up to 6 people. I’ve basically summed it up already. Parkson is just another dull shopping mall, full of people who have attached a large part of their identity to their consumerism. And people who think that buying lots of stuff makes them happy. And people who like to flash their cash with gaudy and kitschy jewellery, clothes and make-up of questionable taste.

This is where independence comes to die. An overly-clean place full of characterless tiles and characterless shoppers, shopping for characterless brands, such as Marc Jacobs, Lacoste, Calvin Klein, and lots of others with forgettable names that I’d never heard of before. Although if I said that while I was in the place I would probably have been branded a heretic.

There’s not too much fun anyone can have in this place, especially if you’re doing your best to hold back tears as you look around and realise just how hegemonic corporate late capitalism can be.

Despite all this, it’s got a great bowling alley. So if you want to do some ten pin bowling, go there. If you don’t, never ever step food inside the place. Unless, of course, you’re a completely vacuous person who just wants to buy more stuff.

The melonpan with ice cream, a Japanese sweet bun, reminded me of our popular local street food: Ice Cream Sandwich. The $1 Ice Cream Sandwich sold along the streets in pushcarts had always been one of Singapore’s Must-Eat items, so popular that it made into one of BuzzFeed’s listicles in 2016, which (unfortunately) went viral for the wrong reason. The Japanese melonpan (also known as melon bun) was named due to its outward appearance which resembled that of a rock melon, but in fact doesn’t taste like one traditionally. Located at the basement level of Our Tampines Hub is Singapore’s first melonpan specialty shop, offering Plain MelonPan in 2 different sizes: Small (1 for $2.60, 5 for $10) and Large (1 for $3.40, 3 for $9), MelonPan Gelato with 3 options: Small melon pan with 1 choice of flavour ($4.80), Small melon pan with 2 flavours ($6.80) and Large melon pan with 2 flavours ($7.80). Order and payment is first made at the casher before proceeding to the right for selection of gelato flavours from their wide selection on display. Interesting flavours include Avocado, Chendol, Honeycomb, Yuzu and D24 Durian, which are local and relatable. Toppings such as Sunflower seeds, Rainbow sprinkle and Peanuts are available at an additional $0.60 whereas durian toppings are priced at $2.50. I chose the Avocado and Black Sesame Gelato to go with my Large MelonPan Gelato ($7.80) that came with 2 rusks (twice-baked bread). The rusk actually acted as a “spoon” to scoop the gelato instead of licking or biting directly into it. I made the mistake of eating my “spoon” (accidentally) and ended up in a mess while licking the gelato though. I was in need of a food delivery & thought I would try out the ordering service of ‘foodpanda’. Clicking through what seemed like endless options, Taj Mahal grabbed my attention. The free delivery, very reasonable prices & the appeal of Indian cuisine meant my decision was made. After opening my account, which was a simple process, my order was placed. As it was my first order I received a confirmation call & was told that my food would arrive in 45 minutes.

An hour later, I received a call & my food had arrived. It was delivered by a lady, smiling & eager to hand me my food. The delivery time really did not matter as the steam filled bag confirmed that it was hot & ready to devour. On opening the individual containers, I was very pleased to see that they had included a ‘salad’, a nice touch that I have not encountered elsewhere.

With regards to the food, I was not disappointed. However, I did find the ‘garlic & cheese’ nan to be lacking in cheese, in fact it was completely absent. The biriyani was perfectly cooked & a contender to meet the best I have ever had. The paneer was also very good, although I found the consistency to be different to other paneers, still tasty but not top notch. The tikka masala I found to be a bit over salted, not unbearably so but it was apparent. However, I was unable to finish it all & once reheated the next day, it all tasted even better, the tikka had become truly sublime.

I will order from Taj Mahal again, without any hesitation, the well-priced menu, wide selection & superb taste make it a must try for any fan of Indian fare.

Zoom has been a haunt of mine for years & has been the venue for many reunions. I have a personal fondness for the place but shall remain impartial for the sake of a beneficial review.

Set on a busy corner near Bùi Viện, Zoom does suffer from road noise & a fairly steady flow of hawkers which can at times become testing. However, the well selected music which is played at an appropriate volume does well to counteract the traffic din. In addition the staff here are always friendly & seem to be very content in their roles as Zoom staff.

When eating here, I usually go for a burger as they are consistently good & from 115,000đ with a free beer, the price is certainly competitive. The menu is broad with everything from Mexican to all day breakfasts. I have never been disappointed with the servings here & am yet to meet anybody that has been.

It is also worth noting that there is a happy hour from 7pm to 10pm when Huda or Saigon Green beers are a mere 10,000đ. After 10pm further offers are available. The owner of Zoom also conducts Vespa tours which has proved to be very popular with tourists visiting Saigon. The appreciation for Vespa is further proven by nostalgic Vespa items adorning the walls.

Zoom gets 4 stars, really I cannot fault any aspect here, it’s a shame that there is no longer outdoor seating but that is something that is certainly beyond the bars control. I recommended a visit for an evening drink or meal whilst enjoying decent music and watching the, at times, frenzied traffic.
