Where You Should Travel In 2018 Based On Your Star Sign

Where You Should Travel In 2018 Based On Your Star Sign

by Marina Nazario @ The A List | The Urban List

It’s a new year, and that means a clean slate. This year could be anything, guys. We know you’re already strategically planning where and when to travel, but before you make any destination decisions, let’s see what the stars have to say. Crack open your diary and make room for one of these epic trips in 2018. Because, obviously, if a city is compatible with your zodiac, you have to go there.

Here’s where you should travel in 2018, based on your zodiac sign. Bon voyage!

Aries

Queenstown, New Zealand

If anyone is going to bungee jump off in Queenstown or go zorbing down the hills of Rotorua, it’s you, Aries. You’re pretty freaking fearless and we can totally see you renting a kombi and road-trippin' your way through the North and South Islands of New Zealand. You don’t need much—just some comfortable clothes, your confidence and an optimistic attitude. Oh, and make sure you come back alive.

Taurus

Utah, USA

Taurus, fly on over the American Southwest and explore the beautiful and underrated state of Utah. You’ll appreciate that it’s pretty easy to travel through—especially if you visit during April-July for glorious weather and Bucket List adventure out the wazoo. Be sure to check out the mind-boggling beauty of Zion National Park, Antelope Canyon and Arches National Park. Pro tip: One of the world’s most epic slip ‘n slides opens on an Olympic ski slope during the (American) summer months. If you don’t do it, we will.

Gemini

Djibouti, Africa

Oh Gemini, we know that you get bored easily. You can’t be bothered seeing another city with the same old H&M’s and Ralph Laurens. So you need somewhere unexplored. You need to go somewhere like Djibouti, a tiny corner of the world in East Africa. Lonely Planet reckons this is the #4 country to visit in 2018. We know you’re intrigued. And good news, there’s plenty to do in Djibouti. Whale shark diving or hike extinct volcanoes? Visit the salt lakes or the canyons?! You’re curious, like George. Go out and explore.

Cancer

Tokyo, Japan

Take your highly imaginative personality onto a plane, then take that plane straight to Japan. You need to let your creativity soar in a country that’s booming with color. Tokyo moves quick, but you can handle it. You, of all people, lurrrrv food, and Japan is the perfect place to stuff your face with all sorts of goodness. So slurp on ramen and nom on REAL sushi. You haven’t had a modern restaurant experience until your meal slips out of a machine #onlyinjapan.

Leo

Cape Town, South Africa

Leo, you might not like taking holidays, but if you muster up a speck of wanderlust you're going to go somewhere that’s worth your time. And in 2018, it’s South Africa. (And no, not just ‘cause your star sign is a lion). You’re energetic, fearless and up for anything. Shark cage dive with Great Whites, visit the duck army winery and go on a safari. Simba wants to meet you.

Virgo

Toronto, Canada

Virgo, step away from the office and onto a plane to Canada. You need a break! Toronto is calling your name. It’s a clean and artsy city, and Drake is from there—so, like, yeah. Go to the top of the CN Tower and splurge on a meal at the revolving restaurant. The city is thriving with music and art, so why don’t you exercise the right side of your analytical brain and let loose. Pro tip: if you can, catch a Raptor game in Jurassic Park (just Google it).

Libra

Cinque Terre, Italy

Libra, you of all people know that balance equals a lot of walking plus heaps of pizza. That’s why you should go to the Cinque Terre in 2018. Being around friendly and freakishly attractive Italians meshes well with your gracious and social attitude. You like sharing and bringing balance to your surroundings, so gather some peeps and enjoy delicious antipasto and vino, plus a few clifftop hikes.

Scorpio

Lahaul, India

ALLLL the way in the tip-top corner of India is the remote region of Lahaul and Spiti. If you haven’t heard of this place, look it up. Bet you didn’t think it would look like that! Small villages, large mountains, medieval monasteries and brilliant blue lake water is practically untouched by mass tourism, according to Lonely Planet. Use your resourcefulness to your advantage and navigate your way through this part of the world in 2018. There will be language barriers, exotic food and vibrant culture. Good thing you're up for a challenge, right?

Sagittarius

Santiago, Chile

Gear up for an adventure, Sag! You need to visit Lonely Planet’s number one destination of 2018: Chile! This is the year to do it, because the country is celebrating its 200th anniversary of independence, so there will be plenty of festivities to go around, especially in its capital, Santiago. Seriously, this country will keep you on your toes. You can explore one of the driest deserts on earth or freeze your butt off navigating your way through the glacial fields. Raise a glass of pisco sour and let’s go!

Capricorn

Mykonos, Greece

Turn off your emails and give your never-ending to-do list a break. It’s time to let loose in Greece, Capricorn! This country provides a great combination of history, relaxing on the beach and partying till the sun comes up (especially on Mykonos—AMIRIGHT?). Take a load off and come back to the office with an envious Mediterranean tan. You deserve it.

Aquarius

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Aquarius, you’re a humanitarian, and San Juan needs your help. It got hit hard by Hurricane Maria and tourism will only help the country move forward. Go to San Juan in 2018 and explore this beautiful, Caribbean island. Hang out with the locals, eat your weight in Arroz con dulce and dance the night away in one of the crazy-good nightclubs. Heck, we’ll come with you.

Pisces

Seville, Spain

Get out of bed and put on your dancing shoes, Pisces, it’s time to do the flamenco around Seville. Good thing you're go-with-the-flow (like most Spaniards) because it will be easy for you to make friends here. At home, you like your alone time, so why not challenge yourself and make this a solo trip. Meet people (maybe the love of our life), dance, eat good food and admire Seville's beautiful architecture. Let loose, Pisces, you gentle thing.

Now that you know where to go in 2018, the stars will tell you which dog to get.

18 Hobbies To Start In 2018

18 Hobbies To Start In 2018

by Olivia Atkinson @ The A List | The Urban List

Well, well, well. 2017, has ditched us. Where did the year go?! As 2018 graces us with its presence, we’ve got a whopping 365 days to fill with whatever we choose (apart from the compulsory job, study, family, friend and general life commitments, of course) and what better way to get started than with sussing out a new hobby or two.

Hobbies can often get a bad rap. We get it. Sometimes there’s an underlying pressure to excel at your chosen hobby rather than have it purely for enjoyment, which makes the whole concept of picking up a hobby from scratch kinda intimidating.

Let us remind you, dear readers; having a ‘hobby’ basically means doing something for yourself because you find it really frickin’ fun. Kapeesh?

Without further ado—and without pressure to take any of these on board if they don’t tickle your fancy—here are 18 hobbies to start in 2018.

Start a wine tasting group. Once in awhile, gather some fellow vino-lovin’ friends and partake in a spot of wine tasting. Everyone has to bring a bottle but keep it in a paper bag. You’ll taste all the wines, make individual notes and then all will be revealed. It’s basically a learn-as-you-go wine tasting course and a solid excuse to get on the grape with your mates. More of a beer person? Start home brewing like you said you would in 2017. Get your camp on. If the only time you’ve slept in a tent is at a music festy, you’re really missing out. Our pretty country is home to some of the world’s best camping spots. Bring the marshmallows and get amongst. Keep track of your finances. We can almost see the eye rolls. If budgeting is your worst nightmare, it’s time to trick your brain into thinking that it’s somewhat enjoyable. Avoid those ghastly spreadsheets and download a nifty app. Trust us, you’ll end up having more moolah for the things you actually want to do. Start selling your shit and/or stop buying shit. You probably don’t need half the stuff you own, y’know? Learn how to not kill an indoor plant. Read up on our guide. Good luck. Make quilts. Quilts are just the best. They keep you warm, look great on a bed or couch and make for an excellent gift. Yep, they’ve made a comeback—type ‘hipster quilts’ into Google and you’ll get the idea. Give bullet journalling a crack. Yeah, yeah, we know no one really has time to jot down all their thoughts/feelings/shit they need to do, but most people have also never tried bullet journalling. It’s as if a to-do list, weekly planner and personal diary had a baby. Read all about it here. Try cooking for fun. If you’re one of these people who reluctantly whips up half-arsed meals during the week, we’re going to let you in on a secret. The more you cook, the better the meals will become. The end result? You’ll begin enjoying cooking because you’ll know that the end product will be epic instead of passably edible. Truth. Pick up a couple of disposable film cameras and go silly. Because of the limited number of shots, you’ll really have to think about what moments you capture. 36 selfie retakes ain’t going to cut the mustard. Become a wedding celebrant. Marriage is as trendy as ever so you’ll be in high hobby demand. Learn how to DJ. There’s an 82-year-old Japanese lady who rips up the decks in some of Tokyo’s best nightclubs proving to all of us that you’re never too old to pick up a new passion. Try your hand at pottery...literally. There’s something about pottery that looks so damn therapeutic. Watch these vids and tell us that you don’t want to give it a go. Become a fiercely competitive Scrabble player. You won’t regret it. Become a food mash-up inventor. Cronuts, sushi burgers and pizza cones are, like, ancient now. Just think of the endless food baby possibilities… Take up woodworking. It’s pretty badass and could lead to some awesome pieces of DIY furniture. Get really freakin’ good at stone skipping. Perfect the art of doing nothing. This might just be the best hobby ever.

Foodie Events Worth Travelling For In WA

Foodie Events Worth Travelling For In WA

by Alexis Donkin @ The A List | The Urban List

Planning a weekend away? What about a weekend away filled with WA's best cheeses, fruits, freshly baked breads and wine, oh you can't forget the wine. But don't worry, we're not just trying to fill your tummies, the events come with plenty of entertainment and some great opportunities to get out on the dance floor and work off those delicious slow-cooked beef rolls and craft WA beers.

That's right, this is your reminder that you don't need to be in the big smoke to enjoy some of the best culinary delights our state has to offer. Make a weekend of it with the girls, a couple of mates, or surprise someone special.

Here are the best foodie events worth travelling for in WA this year.

Taste Great Southern

8—25 March 2018

Spanning over 18 days and five sensational locations in the Great Southern including Albany, Denmark and Mt Barker, Taste Great Southern will see you enjoying local oysters and seafood, cereal crops, beef and lamb dishes and fresh local vegetables (stock up and take some home with you). There will be celebrity chefs—including Marco Pierre White—cooking up a storm and a huge range of amazing events and banquets to get involved in.

The Karijini Experience

17—22 April 2018

The Karijini Experience is much more than a food festival, but it did start with one exceptional dinner and considering the food on offer, we couldn't leave this celebration off this list! Get yourself tickets to the Fervor degustation or make your way to the bush tucker high tea. While you're there, you won't want to miss the opera in the gorge with the WASO string quartet, the astronomy night or the mountain bike ride from the airstrip to the eco-retreat!

Truffle Kerfuffle

22—24 June 2018

If you're not already excited about Truffle Kerfuffle then we probably can't be friends. Returning for its eighth year, Truffle Kerfuffle in Manjimup is one of the highlights of the year for any serious foodie. The line up is still to be announced for 2018, but last year saw the likes of River Cottage's Paul West, Fervor's Paul Iskov, Jesse Blake of Petition, Amy Hamilton of Liberte and so many more top chefs. Go truffle hunting and then sit back and relax while you enjoy one of the tastiest feasts you'll ever eat.

Dirk Hartog Island Gourmet Escape

August 2018

Dirk Hartog Island is about 850km north of Perth and is, quite simply, one of the most stunning places you’ll ever visit. Last year they hosted their first ever Dirk Hartog Island Gourmet Escape as part of the Gascoyne Food Festival and it was such a success that it will be back this year. Russell Blaikie of Must Wine Bar fame will be back this year to cook up a seafood paella over the campfire and he'll also be whipping up some seafood delights for the long table lunch.

Perth Hills Spring Festival

Every weekend in October

If you need to ease into the idea of travelling for food, this one's not too big of a drive. Taking place in the gorgeous hills region, the Perth Hills Pring Festival is the best way to get out of your winter rut! This event played host to an amazing cider festival last year and we are praying it returns for 2018, but there's plenty of other food and wine events to check out, just keep an eye on their website for this year's line up of events.

Brew And The Moo | Pilbara Beef And Beer Festival

TBC

Calling all lovers of the two great Bs—beer and beef. Is there a greater combo? Probably not, especially when you can find them combined in one dish. Brew And The Moo has taken place in the Pilbara for the past two years and we've got all our fingers and toes crossed that it will be back this year! There's obviously plenty to eat and drink, but there's also live music and stand up comedy, because everything is better with live comedy.

Gourmet Escape

15—18 November

There's been a lot of chatter of about the Margaret River Gourmet Escape coming to an end, and while it's true that it won't be held in Margaret River next year, the Gourmet Escape will be back in 2018. After six amazing years in the south west, the Gourmet Escape will most likely be moving to the Swan Valley, which really just means all that foodie goodness is a little bit closer to Perth!

Where To Find The Best Halal Food In Perth

Where To Find The Best Halal Food In Perth

by Kirsty Petrides @ The A List | The Urban List

Australia. The melting pot of cultures. The good news is that it means we have options a plenty when it comes to dining out. The sometimes tricky news is that we all have differing dietary backgrounds and beliefs. But fret not, because we have found some of the best eateries in Perth offering either full or partial halal menus.

Beiyrut Restaurant

Tuart Hill

If you want some seriously delicious and authentic Lebanese food you'll want to head straight to Beiyrut. We'd suggest taking a fairly large group because the menu is huge and everything is amazing—including the halal options.

Recipe Restaurant

East Perth

If you're after a taste of Persia, Recipe Restaurant in East Perth is all over it like white on rice. And in huge news, they offer halal menu items.

Istanbul Turkish Restaurant

Fremantle

Istanbul Turkish Restaurant, just off the Freo cafe strip, is another certified halal restaurant. The team here have been serving delicious and authentic Turkish cuisine for over 20 years, so they know a thing or two about making delicious food.

Elie’s Tent

Victoria Park

At Elie's Tent you get a halal dinner and a show. Two for one. Result. While you chow down on your delicious authentic Lebanese food, you’ll be entertained by traditional Middle-Eastern belly dancers.

Sahara Middle Eastern Restaurant

Perth

If you want a bit of variety, then Sahara is your spot. They blend traditional cuisine from several countries across the Middle-East, giving you a very exotic experience indeed. Our hot tip is to order the mansaf—lamb slow cooked in hot yoghurt, and served with a fresh Arabian salad.

Cairo Cafe

Perth

We probably don't need to clarify that Cairo Cafe serves up authentic Egyptian cuisine. The clues were there, weren't they? What you might not know, however, is that this little suburban gem was founded by a group of classmates who all grew up together in Egypt before relocating to the land down under. We're pretty happy they chose to grace Perth with their fresh, authentic and fragrant Egyptian dishes.

PappaRich

Northbridge

PappaRich in Northbridge is one of Perth’s top Malaysian restaurants, and the place to go if you’re in Perth and looking for some authentic, delicious halal Malaysian cuisine.

Chee Tayeb Restaurant

Perth

Chee Tayeb Restaurant on Murray Street is a family owned eatery providing authentic modern Lebanese cuisine. You’ll get top notch service, a unique Lebanese experience and halal menu items.

Indonesia Indah Restaurant

Perth

This Perth eatery offers an authentic menu of Indonesian favourites, made from the freshest herbs, spices and ingredients. Their menu, which is designed for sharing, has a full halal option for lunch and dinner.

Metro Indian Restaurant

Subiaco

Metro, located in the heart of Subi, is a locally loved Indian restaurant with a wide range of authentic dishes and halal options.

Tamarind Cafe

Claremont

Tamarind is a certified halal eatery, and serves up Asian inspired cuisine specialising in traditional Javanese style satay, grilled to perfection over open hardwood charcoal. They also have unique Asian fusion dishes.

Saffron Fine Persian Cuisine

Middle Swan

The authentic Persian restaurant dishes up mouth-watering food like traditional Persian kebabs, with a side of live music and belly dancing on Friday nights.

The Ajrak

Fremantle

The Ajrak in Fremantle is an authentic Pakistani and Indian spot using traditional recipes - they even mill their spices by hand. That’s dedication. There is a huge selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, as well as a full halal menu.

Our Top Picks At This Year’s Fringe World Festival

Our Top Picks At This Year’s Fringe World Festival

by Emma Pegrum @ The A List | The Urban List

There really is no better time to enjoy everything Perth has to offer than during Fringe, when our sunny Perth days turn into beautiful, balmy nights spent being wowed by entertainers from around the globe. Fringe World is back in 2018 to bring us one blissful month of buzzing bars and pop-up venues, dazzling shows, flowing drinks and good old belly laughs.

We know there’s a tonne of shows on offer at Fringe and, being the stand-up guys that we are (pun intended), we thought we’d put together a handy little list of our top picks so you can hone in on the best shows at Fringe World in 2018.

The Sell-Outs

Club Swizzle

Cabaret/Circus

This brand new show from cabaret extraordinaires La Soiree—who have sold out three Fringe seasons in a row with their sassy cabaret and acrobatics that defy the laws of physics—is coming to light up our new fave pop-up The Ice Cream Factory. You might even get a drink poured from someone who is literally suspended in the air. We think this one’s going to knock your absolute socks off!

Hot Brown Honey

Theatre/Cabaret

This one’s for the women. Hot Brown Honey, touted as one of the most exciting shows hitting this year’s festival, features a host of powerful and talented First Nations women from different international backgrounds who are smashing stereotypes and having a damn good time while doing it! From the producers behind Briefs, you know it’s going to be cheeky yet sophisticated, and include some mind-boggling theatrics.

Briefs: Close Encounters

Circus/Cabaret

If you see nothing else for the entire month of Fringe World, see this. The boys at Briefs blew us away last year with their night of mischief—think disco meets ‘boylesque’ meets circus—and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with this brand new show, Close Encounters. Expect crazy aerials, incredible artistry and ‘warped speed strippers’—brace yourselves, people.

Djuki Mala

Dance

Hailing all the way from Arnhem Land, the Djuki Mala boys sure know how to put on a show. Incorporating moves from their traditional culture with contemporary renditions of disco faves, the show was a sell-out last year and we are pretty sure it will be again. Entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny and heartfelt at the same time, this is a must-see!

Club Briefs

Circus/Cabaret

This fast-paced show brings together a selection of guests from across Fringe World for a night of disco dancing, circus and incredible feats of physical theatre. These guys are blowing stereotypes to bits at Club Briefs with their stellar showmanship and we guarantee you’ll have a damn fun night hanging out with them.

Returning Favourites

Comedy Hypnotist Matt Hale: Mindfoolness

Cabaret/Comedy

If you want to seriously LOL at a family member or friend, take them to this show and get them up on stage. Alternatively, if you want to walk out of a show feeling like you just slept for a week, take yourself and volunteer to participate! Matt Hale’s ‘Mindfoolness’ is as tasteful as hypnotism shows come and will have you in stitches as well as in awe of the unreal things unfolding before you. Go and see it!

Cabaret Consultations

Cabaret/Comedy

If it’s been a while since you went for a checkup, make sure you go see Dr Ahmed in his follow up to last year’s sold out ’Doctor in the House’: Cabaret Consultations. Looking at the make-up of doctors and the human dilemmas they face, this show’s going to be musical, visceral, and pretty darn funny we assume. You know what they say—laughter is the best medicine, so you’d better book your appointment.

Divas: All Male Revue

Cabaret/Music

Ever wondered what it would be like if Adele, Liza Minelli, Madonna and Amy Winehouse were all alive at the same time? Well, if you go see this show, you won’t have to wonder anymore! Presented by Perth locals Proud Entertainment Group, the superstar divas will dazzle and impress as they impersonate and portray all your favourite celebs from throughout the ages. It’s a no-brainer.

TRIAGE! A Nursing Cabaret: Discharged

Cabaret/Comedy

Back after last year’s blockbuster tour, Triage! is back to translate the secret language that nurses have been speaking for years for our entertainment. Join the medical madness as this brand new show makes a world debut!

F**K Tinder

Comedy/Stand-Up

If you’re single and like to laugh, this show is for you. Let Chris Henry be your wingman with his hilarious jokes and bizarre banter, all in the name of getting single people ready to mingle. He’ll provide the conversation, you just have to take care of the good looks and charm.

(NOT) The Bachelor Live On Valentine’s Day Hosted By Luke Bolland

Comedy/Stand-Up

Fans of The Bachelor/Bachelorette, unite! Join local comic Luke Bolland for this beautifully unscripted hour of goodness where four singles enter and one couple leaves. For a cute date night with bae/current tinder date, or a fun night out with the squad, this is the place to go.

Secret Gems

Kevin Quantum: And For My Next Trick

Cabaret/Magic/Illusion

Ever wondered about the science behind magic? With more mind-boggling tricks than you can poke a wand at, this show from Scottish magician-scientist hybrid Kevin Quantum will make you laugh and go ‘whaaaa?’ all at the same time. Since this guy’s now referring to quantum physics as his ‘hobby’, you can pretty much bet your life savings on that he’s pretty bloody good at magic. So go see it!

Plumbing The Death Star

Film & Multimedia/Comedy

What began as a podcast network between a group of mates (or, a group of ‘like-minded idiots’—their words, not ours) has turned into a comedy show with a cult following of people the world over.  Reportedly for the ‘geeks and nerds’, go here for a good dosage of pop-culture comedy.

Sediment

Circus/Contemporary

This show from small performing arts company ‘Company 2’ is a chance to see circus redefine itself. If you want to see some something on the deeper side that still includes feats of physical impossibility, this will be the show to catch.

Glittery Clittery: A Consensual Party

Cabaret/Comedy

We are loving the amount of glitter and sequins this show appears to feature, as well as the fact that it stars three female comedic powerhouses who are uniting to bring us a comedy-cabaret club night. Get the girls together, get glammed up and crack the champas, this one’s gonna’ be good.

Comedic Genius

Kosher Bacon

Comedy/Stand-Up

Oh, to write jokes for a living. Anyone who can crank out punchlines on request has got to be funny, right? Michael Shafar’s Kosher Bacon is dedicated, as the name suggests, to hilarious contradictions. If you are looking for a show that’s clever and quick-witted, as well as downright funny, this could be it!

Josh Glanc: 99 Schnitzels (Veal Ain’t One)

Comedy/Interactive

Well, this guy won Best Comedy Award at last year’s Fringe festival, so say no more. 99 Schnitzels (Veal Ain’t One) is reportedly ‘bizarre, provocative, random and clever’—again, say no more. It’ll be one of those show’s that leaves you uncontrollably laughing while shaking your head and looking around at your mates going ‘ohh-ma-gaaahd’. Get a ticket, period.

All The Rage

Comedy/Stand-Up

Visit the funny side of anger with Claire Hooper as she returns to Perth to deliver this comedy show inspired by the irrational and unjustified anger we all have in common—that which is directed at our mothers. Go and laugh along as you pretend you’ve never broken anything while raging with anger—that includes your mother's heart. Yeah, we thought so.

Luke Bolland: Name Dropper

Comedy/Stand-Up

Who doesn’t like a good name-drop? If you love celebrity gossip, or just love a good laugh, be sure to catch our very own Luke Bolland spinning uncensored yarns about his time spent among the A-listers at this unmissable stand-up show. We’re most looking forward to his stories about Will Smith, and anything that’s advertised with redacted information…

A Different Class

Comedy/Stand-Up

Ah, Perth people love a bit of good ol’ fashion class warfare—the humorous kind, of course. Catch this show to see it at it’s finest, as the world’s of Grant from rural Scotland and Nic from Leafy Leederville collide in what’s sure to be a spectacularly funny display of banter.

Lewis Garnham: The Smartest Idiot You’ll Ever Meet

Comedy/Stand-Up

If you love to see people cracking jokes about their parents, this is the show to catch. Watch as Lewis defames his vastly well read and articulate father who’s a qualified lawyer/geneticist in a comedy show that’ll stroke your funny bone.

Interactive Experiences And Free Events

The Showman’s Dinner

Cabaret/Interactive

Taking over the Urban Orchard this year is The Showman’s Fair, a wild Dutch mini-festival with all sorts of things going on—one of which is this long table dining experience which is happening literally every single night in February for a doable $20.

WTF Renaissance

Visual Arts & Design/Comedy

We were all thinking it, they’ve just said it. All those visits to grandiose museums in Europe are about to pay off when you get the humour behind these ‘old as f*ck paintings’ that are paired hilariously with ‘modern as f*ck captions’ by WTF Renaissance. We’re just sad they beat us to it. Obviously go check it out.

Noodle Palace

Free & Community Events/Events

The series of free events that need no introduction, Noodle Palace is back again and this year it's at Elizabeth Quay. There’s roaming entertainment, live music, DJ’s, drinks and food—and there’s also two Fringe venues with shows happening throughout the festival. You know what to do!

Chinese New Year Fair

Free & Community Events/Events

This cultural extravaganza is easily one of the best nights of Fringe, with a parade, food stalls, lion dragon dancing, games and rides all hitting Northbridge for a whole day of ringing in the Chinese New Year. Stuff your belly full of delicious Chinese delicacies while you’re at it.

The City of Perth Buskers Weekender

Free & Community Events/Events

The first weekend of February is going to see Perth City streets light up as street performers and entertainments from all over the world are given timed slots across seven pop-up stages. This weekender will see Guinness World Record attempts, flame juggling acrobats and a whole host of other feats of impossibility. Remember to take some cash to flip into these guys’ hats!

Blue Water Vaudeville

Cabaret/Burlesque

Guys, this is a literal after-dark underwater cabaret show where mermaids wow you with moves (as if mermaids needed to do more to wow us…) It’s the first time Fringe has seen a show like this, and it’s the perfect thing to catch between shows, on your way to a show, between drinks… you get the message. Just stop by and see it!

The Big Splash WA

Free & Community Events/Street Art

We’ve been waiting for this moment. The moment where we could announce to you that a pod of wildly colourful dolphins is coming to Perth streets and you can spend a whole day looking at them! The kicker is that this project is raising awareness for children's mental health, and when it’s all over you can even take one of the dolphins home via auction with all proceeds going toward the same cause!

Under The Sky Sessions

Free & Community Events/Music

If you’re anything like us, you probably always forget that Fringe also happens outside of Northbridge. Like, it happens everywhere. So branch out this year and hit up the Under the Sky Sessions at the Sunset Veranda (Brighton Reserve) right on the beach. Local and live acoustic music with drinks and eats on offer at sunset? Get us there now!

Leedypalooza—Unfair Day

Free & Community Events

A place where everyone is ‘most unwelcome’ to ‘not enjoy’ this very ‘unfair day’ in Leederville. Featuring ‘unlucky dips’, ‘bad family portraits’ and ‘misfortune cookies’, this is a street party with a twist. Perfect for introducing the fam to Fringe or perusing the shops while enjoying the buzz of Fringe all around.

12 Health And Fitness Events You Need To Know About This Year

12 Health And Fitness Events You Need To Know About This Year

by Rosie Gregory @ The A List | The Urban List

Jumping on the health and fitness bandwagon this year? We’ve got you sorted with all the very best events to book into your calendar now so you can immerse yourself in the #Wellness and #Fitspo world. From the classic Perth races to philanthropic causes and the emergence of holistic festivals that will have you uplifted (instead hungover) the next day, we’ve rounded up the best of the best so you can pencil them in, start training and tick off some of those resolutions in 2018.

Here are the best perth health and fitness events you need to know about.

South West Yoga Festival

The first ever Yoga festival for the South West launches this weekend with a full day festival of conscious celebration going down on a private property overlooking Bunker Bay. Melding the mindful and spiritual, this inaugural festival will reset and refresh your mind, body and soul for the year ahead. From flow classes to drumming workshops, health talks and crystal meditation, even chakra dancing, expect to get downward dogging and syncing to high vibes, all in the name of yogic celebration!

The Perth Wellness Festival

Bare & Wilde has teamed up with EcoLuxe Events to bring us the first Perth Wellness Festival on 4 Febraury this year. If you like the sound of a day full of yoga, Pilates, wellness workshops, fresh coconuts and nourishing noms then this is one for you. Speakers from Sodashi Skincare, Wellineux and The Modern Day Woman will lead the wellness workshops and will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

Melanoma March

When you think of Cottesloe beach, the first image that often springs to mind is tanned bodies baking on the white sand in high summer. Despite everyone knowing that we should fake not bake, melanoma is still on the rise and this year more than 14,000 Aussies will be diagnosed with it. While we’ve increased efforts to slip, slop, slap, we're still without a cure for the most common cancer in young Australians. On 8 April, our beloved Cottesloe beach will play host to the Melanoma March, with either a 5km walk or 10km run to support melanoma research, so you can skip the tanning and opt for fitness and charitable activism instead!

Wanderlust 108

Wanderlust, the world’s only mindful triathlon event, might not reward you with a medal as you cross the finish line, but the intentional activity series will reward you with a heightened sense of wellness (sahhh on trend for 2018). With a reputation for bringing in expert teachers, spiritual leaders and musical masterminds, this is a celebration of all things epic in the mindful movement world. The holistic upgrade on a traditional triathlon includes a 5km run, outdoor flow class and a guided meditation.

Mother’s Day Classic

The largest community fundraising event for breast cancer research will be back again in 2018 so you can walk, run or skip your way around the 4km or 8km course in aid of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bring family and friends along to honour and celebrate at the Tribute Wall set up in the Supreme Court Gardens before cruising the picturesque route around Riverside Drive in your prettiest of pink outfits!

Bridges Night Ride

Cycling the Swan River may be a classic “middle aged man in lycra” activity, but the Bridges Night Ride is set to change that on 9 June this year. Lighting up the night for the MSWA charity, this night-time ride will have you decking yourself out with reflective gear, strips, glow sticks and even Christmas lights, to join in on a 40km or 70km scenic route of the city. Thankfully, it will be so dark you can almost miss the obscene amount of tight lycra shorts…

Step Up For MSWA

Tackled Jacobs Ladder once and now feel ready to level up? Then meet your next challenge—the towering 1,103 stairs of Perth’s tallest building, Central Park. If you can bear the vertigo, get ready to run, climb, or even crawl if you must, your way to the top in support of MSWA. Super-fitties can go it alone otherwise (us sane folk) can enter as part of a team and face the 53 flights to conquer the vertical challenge on 17 June.

Lorna Jane Active Nation Day

Active Nation Day is fast becoming a staple in the Aussie Workout Calendar. Founded by home-grown activewear label, Lorna Jane Active, with a simple mission of helping us to move more, these events draw in the big crowds for outdoor boot camp sessions and fitspo celebrations, all in the name of sweating, celebrating and supporting healthy, active bodies. Dates are yet to be confirmed for 2018 but we have our fingers crossed!

City To Surf

The city’s most iconic race is set to return on 26 August, leaving you approximately seven months to prepare for that 42km marathon. Not into the long-distance thing? Don’t despair, this community filled event offers varying lengths for all fitness levels, from 4km, 12km to 21km, so you can walk, jog or party with the crowd on your way from the CBD to coast. And all that huffing and puffing won’t just be for your own personal achievement, flex your philanthropic muscle by fundraising for Activ or your favourite charity and put that sweat to good work.

Spartan Race

After the success of the 2017 Spartan Race, we have our fingers crossed that Reebok and Spartan Australia will be bringing the world’s premier obstacle course back to the west. Far beyond your usual race, here you will face obstacles the whole way around the course to challenge your fitness, strength and mobility. From barbed wire crawls, to rope climbs and hoists, get yourself prepared now by not only conditioning your body (beware: burpees) but also your mind to tough it out! If you’re looking to sign up, get prepared with these handy hacks and survival tips and get into the Spartan state of mind!

Flow Festival

Flow Festival, WA’s annual three-day celebration of yoga, music and healing arts is back to unite the community amidst the gum trees of Serpentine. With interactive workshops and yoga sessions, healing meditations and storytelling, it’s a touch woo-woo and whole lot uplifting. The more holistic take on a classic summer festy will feature inspirational teachers, foodies, body workers and healers, so get ready to get flowing, aligned and soulful! Dates are yet to be confirmed, but generally, the event runs near the summer solstice in December.

F45 Playoffs

Are you a member of the F45 cult? Then start prepping now for the ultimate in functional fitness championships with the F45 Playoffs. Testing your agility, endurance and strength, these playoffs will pull out the fittest of the fit through the challenging trials and a chance to win state, national and even world titles. Think you’ve got what it takes to earn the title of fittest in the world? Better start hitting those sessions now…

18 Perth Breakfasts You Need To Eat In 2018

18 Perth Breakfasts You Need To Eat In 2018

by Emma Pegrum @ The A List | The Urban List

With a new year comes new cravings, and luckily, new spots to satisfy them too! The Perth brekky scene has been proliferating lately, and we’re sure that 2018 is going to bring many a morning where the home cooked avo on rye just ain’t gonna cut it.

Whether it’s to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in forever, or to pop down for an easy bite with your regulars, here are the 18 breakfasts you need to try in 2018.

1. Chilli Eggs | Springs Kitchen

Rivervale

Never one to look past chilli eggs on the menu, Springs Kitchen will be an absolute 2018 go-to. Located riverside and with a chic fit out, the meals coming out around you won’t be the only thing you’ll salivate over. If chilli eggs with rocket, coriander, avocado, feta and a house-made chilli jam takes your fancy, be sure to check this place out. For something heavier, try the Skirt Steak with chimichurri, fried eggs and hand cut chips!

2. Blended Strawberry & Banana Bowl | Island Market

Trigg

Ever been sat on the beach, craving a fruity smoothie bowl with some crunch? Well, now you can get it, beachside at Island Market in Trigg. The blended strawberry and banana bowl is served with chia coconut pudding and crunchy granola to boot, making brekky by the beach even more enjoyable (if that’s even possible).

3. Chilaquiles Rojas | La Vida Urbana

Leederville

This Leederville newbie has been tickling our fancy lately, and their take on this traditional Mexican breakfast is no exception. La Vida Urbana's Chilaquiles Rojas features crispy tortilla bathed in spicy salsa, topped with a perfectly fried egg—this dish is simple deliciousness at it’s best. You know where to find us.

4. Beef, Bread & Egg | Syd & Phyllis

Midland

Setting up shop in the old Midland Railway Workshops, modern eatery Syd & Phylis is showcasing local produce and doing a damn good job of it. This dish packs in the taste with braised beef brisket, a perfect 63 degree egg topped with lashings of hollandaise, sitting pretty on a bed of southwest apple & fennel salad and wood fired toast. We hear you won’t be disappointed with your coffee, either!

5. Green Bowl | Regular Coffee Company

Carine

Here to ease you back into healthy eating in the new year is the Green Bowl at this new spot in Carine, Regular Coffee Company. Served up with roasted broccoli, pickled mushroom, crispy enoki, poached egg, quinoa, toasted grains, verde and charred lemon, this dish is the one to eat when you want to literally taste health.

6. Tirolese | Trio Cafe & Wine Bar

Mt Lawley

Anywhere that serves brekky until 3pm is ay-okay in our book, and Trio is one of those places. The Tirolese comes with potato, smoked bacon, scamorza cheese, sundried tomato and fried eggs, garnished with chive—delicious, different and definitely on our to-try list. You can also grab Italian style coffees, and maybe a cheeky takeaway homemade baked good… bombolinis, anyone?

7. Muesli Bowl | Mille on Beaufort

Bedford

Mille has had a serious face-lift and so has it’s menu, with the breakfast options kept simple for your ease. The muesli bowl is served with puffed wild rice, pecan, cranberry clusters, cold pressed yoghurt and rhubarb compote, topped with crunchy granola—the perfect combo when you’re after something rejuvenating.

8. Scrambled Eggs | Frank

Northbridge

Frank is the place to hit up when you want your brekky with a side of culture—especially if you’re a late riser. Opening for morning eats from 10am only, suggest this in the group chat if you want a guaranteed sleep in for Saturday’s breakfast date. Scrambled eggs might sound simple, but this one comes with smearings of pumpkin and ricotta, a delicious bacon crumble and freshly grilled bread - yum.

9. Smashed Avo | ATLAS Food + Coffee

West Perth

This place is doing speciality coffee, delicious brunches and vegan smoothies, and doing them well. ATLAS’s smashed avo comes with poached eggs, quinoa, seeds, nuts, fresh, sweet corn, pomegranate, and halloumi, topped with mojo verde and lemon on seeded ciabatta. It’s almost too much to fit into one sentence! You can also feast on things like hotcakes with Sichuan pepper caramel and warm peach, Nutella panna cotta with burnt fig granola or miso scrambled eggs. Get us there now!

10. Ginger Poached Pear Bircher | Lily Bean

Mosman Park

Starting your day off right is made easy by this convenient little spot on a south-siders daily commute, Lily Bean. Their bircher muesli is not only delicious, but a decent size to keep you fuelled all morning, and comes with a beautiful big poached pear for extra flavour! Yes please.

11. Cocowhip Fruit Bowl | Monty's

Scarborough

A breakfast that is reminiscent of ice cream is always a good thing, and that's exactly what you'll get at Monty's. The Cocowhip fruit bowl is the perfect way to finish up a morning at the beach, but they also do a scrumptious French toast if you feel like indulging.

12. Sous Vide Eggs | Cafe DeBretton & Bennet

Fremantle

This beautifully designed and decorated cafe is a taste of France in Freo, and a new favourite. The team at Cafe DeBretton & Bennet is serving up sous vide eggs which are the definition of simply divine, coming out hot with charcoal bread and French butter. Add one of the yummy extras to flesh this dish out and you’ll be on to a winner my friends!

13. Honey Toast Bread | Brown Spoon Cafe

Victoria Park

It’s safe to say this dish is already famous but if you haven’t tried it yet, Brown Spoon's Honey Toast Bread packed full of peanut and matcha butter, Nutella and chocolate will not disappoint for those craving a sweet breakfast. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also dig into a whole host of other Korean dessert favourites!

14. Açai Bowl | The Other Side

Swanbourne

Recently taken over by the crew at Daisie’s Cottesloe, Swanbourne locals’ fav The Other Side is getting a bit of a fresh take. Venturing into the world of açai and smoothie bowls, this lil’ ray of sunshine is going to be a serious go-to and the Açai Bowl is going to be the ushe. Packing in the health with coconut chips, house-made gluten free granola, banana and strawberries, this one’s going to tick all of our ‘new year new me’ boxes. Keep your eyes peeled for their new menu coming soon!

15. Morning Ramen | George Street Quarters

East Fremantle

The latest reason to peruse property listings in the illustrious East Freo precinct, George Street Quarters is dishing up all day brekky and the menu is out of control. Guys, we know morning ramen might sound risky, but this one is seriously good. Served up with chashu pork belly, wheat noodle, broccolini and an onsen egg in tonkotsu brothy goodness, this is a breakfast that is sure to wake up those taste buds. Btw - an ‘onsen’ is a Japanese hot spring, in which the ‘onsen egg’ was traditionally cooked - hence the name. Pretty cool huh?

16. Pancake Stack | Someday Coffee Co

Floreat

This beautiful suburban cafe is inviting locals back into a forgotten pocket of Floreat with their smiling team, smooth coffee and drop-dead delicious menu. Someday Coffee Co.’s pancake stack is packed with everyone’s favourite, caramelised banana, plus summer berries, toasted seeds and nuts and cinnamon, dolloped with greek yoghurt and maple syrup, and it’s damn tasty.

17. Kimchi Burger | Doric Street Cafe + Kitchen

Scarborough

Is it just me, or is everyone loving this Korean-inspired breakfast trend that’s been sweeping Perth lately? Doric Street is arguably leading the way with Chef James Pack (hailing from fine-dining heavyweight Wildflower) serving up some true treats for the people of Scarborough and beyond. The Kimchi Burger is a best seller, and with the perfectly cooked stringy Korean beef, pickles, cheese and god-send sauce Sriracha mayo, we’re not surprised. What a way to start the day!

18. Red Velvet Waffles | The Little Resident

Nedlands

Tacked onto the front of one of our favourite bars in Nedlands, The Little Resident serves up casual brekky, brunch and coffee from morning til late (at least, later than most Perth cafes). These waffles are what brekky’s made of with chocolate brownie crumble and mascarpone, plus a healthy drizzling of maple syrup and fresh berries to bring it on home.

15 Amazing Things To Do In Perth This Weekend

15 Amazing Things To Do In Perth This Weekend

by Fran Walker @ The A List | The Urban List

After a rough start to the week (has it ever rained that hard in January before?) things are looking up for the weekend. We’ve got the return of Noodle Palace, a gin masterclass, twilight markets, séances and more.

Here are 15 amazing things to do in Perth this weekend.

All Weekend

Noodle Palace Launch At Elizabeth Quay

That’s right ladies and gents, Noodle Palace is back again for another year. Think rooftop sky decks, a hanging lounge garden and city views—could it get any better? There will be heaps of events on each week and it all kicks off tomorrow night with Sydney musician Basenji. Doors are open from 4pm with free entry until 8pm so make sure you get in early. For more information click here.

Séance at Noodle Palace

As part of Fringe Festival, Noodle Palace is hosting a séance... kinda. It's more of a theatrical séance which is held in a 40ft shipping container in complete darkness—there's nothing like a bit of sensory deprivation to get your night started. Expect some pretty amazing audio trickery and a whole lot of fun. Grab your tickets here.

Giselle At The Quarry Amphitheatre

We can all agree that the story of Giselle is an all-time classic and now’s your chance to watch it under the stars. Perth City Ballet will be performing this masterpiece at The Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach so bring your picnic blanket, a basket of food and relive the tale of Giselle. Tickets are almost sold out so get yours here now!

Thursday 18 January

Gin Blending Masterclass At Daddy Long Legs

Calling all gin lovers, Daddy Long Legs Bar has teamed up with the award-winning distillery Limeburners to bring you an evening all about gin, yep that’s right. The masterclass includes tasting samples of the range that Ginversity currently has on offer, along with the chance to create your own gin, say whaa?! Get your tickets here now.

Walking Cocktail Tours In The City

From the same guys that brought us the Fromage Tours, you can now get a bit of exercise while sipping delicious cocktails around the city. With venues including the new Market Grounds, COMO The Treasury and Bob's Bar, you'd be mad to miss this. If you can't make it tonight, the tour will be running each Thursday for the next six weeks. Get more info here.

Friday 19 January

Terrace Nights In Claremont

Terrace Nights is bringing twilight markets to Claremont’s Bay View Terrace tomorrow night from 6-9pm. The road will be closed as restaurants, cafes and bars spill out on to the streets so take a stroll down the main strip, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the atmosphere. 4 Food Trends You’ll Be Seeing A Lot Of In 2018

4 Food Trends You’ll Be Seeing A Lot Of In 2018

by Sophia Richardson @ The A List | The Urban List

If there’s one thing that never stays the same, it’s what food we are obsessing over. Except for Golden Gaytimes—those things are for life, okay. Per usual, 2018 is set to have some cracking food trends and because we consider ourselves foodie sleuths, we’ve rounded up everything you’ll be bingeing on throughout the year.

Meat-free meat? Alcohol-free alcohol? Will the madness ever end? Weeeelll, not this year. Food in 2018 is going to be mind-boggling and sometimes a little bit scary but let’s walk this journey together—one strange food trend at a time.

Alcohol-Free Alcohol

This is no time to freak out everyone, just take a few deep breaths and listen to what we have to say. With the rise of healthy people who prefer to live that  #cleaneating lyfe, many people are cutting out alcohol completely. It’s only a matter of time before alcohol-free beer, wine and spirits hit the shelves in Australia which means you can still enjoy a gin and tonic on a hot summers day, without ending up in the gutter (we’re definitely not speaking from personal experience).

Gut-Friendly Food

2017 has seen an increase in people with intolerances to gluten, dairy and pretty much everything fun. We predict that in 2018 there’ll be a huge rise in foods available at cafes and restaurants specifically designed to help the gut—think more ferments, pickled veggies and low FODMAP foods for those gastro-challenged folk.

Meat-Free Meat

If you hadn’t noticed, heaps of your mates have probably turned vegan in 2017 that that’ll only increase in popularity through 2018. Instead of a sad grilled mushroom or a chickpea patty on your burger, we think 2018 might be the year for lab meat (LOL what?). Scientists all over the world are working on meat that’s made in a lab and totally vegan—even Leonardo DiCaprio has invested in companies working on plant-based meat substitutes. And y’all know that if it’s good enough for Leo, it’s good enough for you.

Table Tech

We reckon that 2018 will see a huge number of technological advancements in all things food. At the moment, apps like UberEats are our daily life-savers (literally) but we predict 2018 will be all about technology at restaurants and in delivery—basically, we’re just waiting for drones. TBH though, Melbourne already has a cafe where a robot named Rocky makes a mean coffee #thefutureishere.

My Favorite Meals of 2017

by Christina Mitchell @ east bay dish

My favorite meals this year were also the most memorable because they all taught me something new. In 2017, I learned that while unique dishes can surprise and delight, comfort food satisfies the soul – and both are enjoyable. I’ve had so many delicious experiences this year, but six meals definitely stand out. Here they are, in […]
