Statement of purpose

by noreply@blogger.com (Karthik Reddy Katla) @ us universites list gre high score toefl high score universities list

Statement of purpose

Your previous academic background and scores in the standardised tests ( GRE / SAT) show what you are capable of delivering. The admissions committee also wants to know what are the motivations that are driving your life at this point in time. Why do you want to pursue the course you are applying for?

How relevant is the course to your long term goals?

Since you will not go through an interview, the admissions committee gets to know about you as a person through your SOP. SOP is very important. Spend time to get it right.

How can you get it right? - by being honest about yourself and projecting your true self in the SOP.

What should you do to write a good SOP?

Think about yourself and do the following exercise:
Write down all your past accomplishments - academic, extra curricular, social contributions, sports - whatever you've done well in life. Also write down all the things that you feel or care for strongly.
What is it that you want to do in life? What is the career you want to choose for yourself in the future and why?
Write down the area that you want to study further in. How will taking up this course of study help you achieve your long term career goals that you described above?
Now, write down why should you have the life that you want? Why should you get all the things you listed above? What qualifies you to have all the success you desire?

There's another thing you got to do, use the internet or the university prospectus to study about the university you are applying to and the course you want to study. Then, You MUST mention in your SOP as to why you chose the university you are applying to.

Now, you've got the contents of your SOP in place.
The next step is to write it in the form of an essay.

Make sure your SOP is grammatically correct, is written in a good flow and does not exceed the prescribed word limit. The SOP should be enthusiastic, friendly and confident in tone. If writing is not your strength, don't hesitate to take the help of a friend or colleague who can write well.

Tip:
If you are not comfortable with editing your own essays. Use a Professional Essay Editing Service. There are many Essay Editing Services available on the Web. Do compare and make an analysis before you take up a service.

US Interviews

by noreply@blogger.com (Karthik Reddy Katla) @ us universites list gre high score toefl high score universities list

Interviews

Interviews by Institutes abroad is very rare and is usually limited to some business schools. You most probably will not have to go through one. But, just to let you know, Wharton visits Delhi, Bombay and some other cities every year to interview applicants. Some schools conduct interviews telephonically and some others through their alumni who are based in the city you live in.

If you happen to be applying to an institute that wants to interview, you ought to be prepared.

Preparing for the Interview - have the right attitude and do your homework.

Consider the interview as your final opportunity to market yourself. Establish your objectives for the interview. Think about ways of reinforcing your strengths and addressing your weaknesses. Be prepared to support your claims in the application essays. Good preparation will also help you relax somewhat during the interview.

Know all that you can about the school and the program - the school brochures and the website can be useful sources. Carry out a search in Google or Yahoo by the name of the school and read the relevant results. This could make you aware of some specific details about the school or the program, which would reflect in your answers during the interview. It could pay to project yourself as a person who pays attention to detail. It also conveys your interest in the school.

Prepare for the typical interview questions. Most of the interview questions come from two categories
(1) Standard questions for all students like Why MBA, Why Yale etc.
(2) Questions tailor-made for you based on your essays and your resume.
The interviewer may wish to probe into some of your claims to fame in your essays. Be sure to review your application, essays and resume prior to the interview. The worst thing you can do is contradicting yourself at the interview.

List of standard questions
Why do you wish to pursue the program that you have applied to?
Why do you want to attend this school?
Name some other schools that you have applied to?
Tell me about yourself.
What are your career goals?
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
What value can you add to the program?
What are your greatest achievements?
What do you consider your three top strengths/weaknesses?
Why should we accept you?
Do you have any questions?

Most of the above questions would have been covered in your essays in one form or the other. Review the exercise that you did in the essays section to get your life in perspective. The interview is your big chance to elaborate on things that you could not cover in your essays. You should also be ready with 3-5 good questions that reflect your concerns about the school and your success in the program.

Other typical interview questions would most likely be from one of these categories:

a) Undergraduate Education

Tips:

Remember your interviewers are from the academia, so give adequate importance to learning and education. Show your commitment to learning and growing. Talk about your extracurricular activities and how these activities helped build your well-rounded personality. Detail your contribution as well as what you learnt. Describe how your schooling will help you in achieving your career goals. Describe any leadership experiences and what you learnt from those experiences.

b) Work Experience

Tips:

Be enthusiastic about your job experience. Portray yourself as one who tries to exceed expectations. Stress on teamwork, motivation, continuous learning and ownership. Be positive when talking about your boss or your firm. If you changed jobs, it should have been motivated by a desire for more challenges, more responsibilities, opportunity to grow and so on. Avoid negative comments like unappreciated, underpaid etc. Don’t be afraid to talk about a failure. Stress on what you learnt from your failure. Describe your leadership experiences at work. Leadership potential is a very important quality desired by all MBA programs.

c) Goals

Tips:

Show that you are committed to your career objectives. Your goals should be consistent with your experience and your desire to pursue further education. Be practical where you see yourself in five years ( refrain from making a statement like "I will be the CEO of Hewlett-Packard") and be prepared to demonstrate how advanced training and education will help you achieve your goals. Highlight some of the strengths of the program to further justify your choice. Make sure that all your answers connect and reflect the thought you have put in planning for your future.

d) Personal

Tips:

Be sure to prepare a brief outline of your upbringing. Take every opportunity to show that you are achievement oriented and strive to develop both personally and professionally. At the same time, show yourself to be a well-balanced and sensible person with varied interests. In your choice of books, it does not matter whether it is science fiction or biographies: the idea is to show yourself as knowledgeable in whatever interests you pursue.

US Application procedure for Undergraduate program

by noreply@blogger.com (Karthik Reddy Katla) @ us universites list gre high score toefl high score universities list

Application FormsSend enquiries at least 15 to 18 months before the proposed date of admission. There are two ways to get application forms.

Requesting Application Forms via email : You can request application forms from the universities website. Most universities have a form on their website which can be completed online to request application material.

Requesting Application Forms via Air Mail : The other way is to send a request by airmail for application material. The request should contain a brief description of your educational background, academic objectives, source of financial support, English proficiency and standardized test scores.

Downloading from the university website : Many universities have a downloadable and ready to print versions of their application forms on the net. These can be used for applying just as regular forms.

Eligibility

Admission to a College or University in US requires a completion of twelve years of elementary and secondary education. In the Indian context, this implies qualifying in class 12th examination or junior college as applicable. The acceptable degrees include : Indian School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Higher School Certificate, Higher Secondary Certificate, All India Senior School Certificate.

You can either pursue a two-year Associate degree like Associate of Science (A.S.) or a four-year degree like Bachelor of Science (B.S.).

Application Requirements
Click the below links for more information
:: Academic Records :: Tests :: Recommendation letters :: Sop :: Financial Support :: Interviews

Academic Records
Students who are applying for a Bachelor program or another undergraduate course would be required to submit a secondary school report and transcripts (report cards) of the final exams. The report form should be filled out by a school official like the principal, counselor or headmaster. This form should introduce you in the context of your whole school experience in relation to the other students in your class. Admission committees will be interested in learning how you have performed in your own educational system. The school report should talk about your accomplishments and provide a prediction of your chances for success in university-level studies.

Since there is a variation between the styles of scoring used abroad and the ones used in India, ask your school to include a guide to the grading standards used in your educational system and your school. If your school ranks students by their level of academic achievement, make certain that the ranking is included with the other details. Also send the school / junior college leaving certificate as and when it is available.

If the transcripts are in a language other than English, then it must be translated into English only by the issuing authority or university otherwise it may not be acceptable.

Visa Interview questions (CS)

by noreply@blogger.com (Karthik Reddy Katla) @ us universites list gre high score toefl high score universities list

  1. 1. Fist of all don't forget to wish visa officer.

    2.Why US?
To pursue Masters in Computer Science.
    Why only US?
It is the center of excellence in the field of computer science. That?s why it?s most sought after International learning center. The US Universities have gr8 facilities for research. Moreover, an MS degree from a Univ in US has high recognition back here in INDIA, and would help me to establish myself in a good position after my MS.
How can u say it is the center of excellence?
The Global Giants are from US, to name a few.

    1. In the field of Hardware ? IBM, INTEL, DELL, HP.

    2. In the field of Software ? MICROSOFT, ORACLE, SUN-MICROSYSTEMS, LINUX.

    3. In the field of network ? CISCO.

    4. In the field of OFC (Optical Fiber Cable) ? AT&T AMERICAN TELEPHONES & TELEGRAPH, BELL-LABS.

    5. In the field of Application Software ? MOTOROLA, GE.
How can u say it?s most sought after International learning center?
Some of the best students and faculty from across the globe converge to US for their enrichment. For example in my school the number of International students are from more then 35 countries.

    Then?
US universities are Primarily Research Centers. Every professor has an identified field of Research.
How can u say US universities are Primarily Research Centers?
As the curriculum is more practical in application oriented. I wish to be the best and be the best.
    Why MS?
Firstly for in-depth knowledge, Secondly as a mark of Academic Excellence, Finally for a long term career prospects.
    Why not in INDIA?
I have an option to go for the best.
Who said that US is the best?
As per U.S.E.F.I. United States Education Foundation in India, US Education is 6 years ahead of the rest of the world.
I am from US, u can see me only, but I don?t find sth like that in US?
Sir, u r in the best of the places, deciding the future of young Indians like me. Given a chance I wish to be your deputy.
IIT is also the best option u have here, then?
Even the IITians are moving to US. Ultimately, it is the quality of education and right kind of Exposure.
    Exposure?
The curriculum is the most updated and keeps abreast with the latest across the globe.
More number of vacancies are there in IIT, because they are moving to US.
IIT and NIT?s are considered the best but admissions are influenced by several external factors such as Reservations, Performance in the option of other applicants on that particular day. My opportunities are reduced more to chances. That?s why I chose US schools which have a transparent and clear admission process.
Why only US and not any other countries?
Above all US is undisputed in Computers.
    Why this School?
This school is the best out of my admits.
How can u say that this is the best among u r admits?

    i. Carriage Foundation Ranking has ranked it X%. Also the Reputation of the School, the Profile of the Department, and the course curriculum are the key factors.
What do u mean by the Reputation of the School?
This school is established in 1969 year. The total number of students in the campus are 4500 comprising of 2000 graduates. The faculty to full time equivalent student ratio is 12:1 and the university is located in the capital of Illinois, Springfield.
What do u mean by Profile of the Department?
There are six professors who hold an ultimate degree.
Dr. Ted Mims?PhD. In University of North Texas, Denton teaches CO, Introduction to OS, Network Administration, & Computer Architecture.
Dr. Kamyar Dezhgosha -- PhD. In University of Toledo teach Java and Object Oriented design.
Prof. Dr. Ted Mims and Prof. Dr. Kamyar Dezhgosha teach my field of interest and I wish to do my master?s under their guidance. They have careers par excellence.
What do u mean by Course curriculum? Course-curriculum is everywhere.
The curriculum is updated and matches to the demand of the university.
How many schools did u apply? List them.
List the number of schools u have applied, I have applied to 5 schools.
    UIS, UTA, EMU, SDSU, FDU.
Why did u choose this Univ?
This is the best out of my admits.
But I think the third Univ is better than the one u applied, why don?t u go for it?
I appreciate Ur concern but Univ of Illinois, UIS is my first choice.
U got 4 admits out of 5, u applied, how?
I picked up the schools which suit my profile.
How did you come to know about these schools?
Few of my seniors, my frenz have guided me and net.
    Have u contacted any professor?
No. If yes u can show email proofs.
    Why?
I thought their time is too precious and it is too premature to disturb them.
I will take the benefit of their expertising skills when I land there.
Is it worth spending this much of money on ur Master?s?
Looking on Future aspects and Income levels, it?s definitely worth.
My parents do appreciate the importance of Quality education.
    Tell me about ur parents?
    Tell about ur parents here.
How they are going to fund you?
I have liquid cash sources of XX lakhs of which X lakhs are FD?s and X lakhs are NSC.
Basically I am from a rich family, money is never a constraint.
How did ur parents accumulate this much money?
We have been into business from 45 years.
Our income levels are always greater than the expenses.
    Do u have any Brother?s or Sister?s?
Just give him the details if any.
If u have a bro\sis, what about their Finance?
In two years from now, I will return back and guide him\her appropriately.
What is the guarantee that u will return back?
The sole aim for me is to go to US, do my MS there, but not to work there.
More over I have many obligations towards my family and I must return as I need to take care of them.
As I have enough property, there is no need for me to work in US.
There is untapped market potential in INDIA.
Where can I expect u in five years from now, Ur future plans?
Working for a multinational company like Satyam, Cognizant technologies, Polaris, Iflex, Visual Soft, InfoTech Enterprises.
As per NASCOM (National Association of Software services COMpanies), the future demand for IT Professionals is estimated 33 lakhs by 2015 and now it is 4 lakhs.
Give me 3 reasons for giving u a valid visa to u?

? Basically, I have been a performer passing my engg. In first class.

? I have flair for higher education with an application angle.

? Above all, very supportive school and parents
    What if I don?t give u a visa?
Iam sure performers and genuine students are never let down at the consulate.
    Ur the ultimate judge.
Ok, fine if I give u a visa?
    Thanq, Profusely.
Why ur Gre score is low?
The verbal section is too tough.
    It had its impact.
Why did not u write it again?
I thought I will make amends with my toefl and academic scores.
    How many backlog? Why?
    X number of backlogs.
(For less no of backlogs)I felt ill quite a sudden in the middle of my exams.
(For more no)Until my engg. I was a good student but during engg. I was unable to balance between my studies and sports so little damage was done but now I made strong amends that I will work hard and achieve what I want.
    Will u work while studying?
Yes, if it is related to my studies like graduate assistantship.
U seem to be have well prepared?
It?s a lifetime interview for me, and so I did my home-work.
    Why it?s a lifetime interview?
It gives a clear direction to my career.
Why did u come for Delhi instead of Chennai?
I did try for good number of days.
When u return back, how much do u expect salary pay?
    5-6 lakhs.
Thanx to globalization the pay packets are good enough in INDIA and this is the pay they are offering now.

Collection of Old F1 Visa experiences

by noreply@blogger.com (Karthik Reddy Katla) @ us universites list gre high score toefl high score universities list

Guys,

I got visa on June 5th 2006 for Oklahoma State University at Chennai Consulate. My major is MS in Mechanical Engg. My Interviewer looks like an American born Indian, infact he is an American. My interview is just only for 2 or 3 minutes. VO looks very busy.

Me: Good morning Sir, How are you doing today?

Visa Officer: he wished me back and asked me to give him the folder which has all important documents set in order by embassy people.

Me: Yes sir. and i gave that folder to him.

Visa Officer: What are your Admits?

Me: Univ of Utah- Salt lake city, Oklahoma State University- Stillwater, University of South Florida-Tampa, Univ of South alabama-Mobile.

Visa Officer: Show me your Score cards and transcripts.

i gave him all those. Her looked at my scores and transcripts and typed something on his PC and scanned my transcript.

Later he released golden words - "U will receive ur Passport with visa with in 2 or 3 days". I am not able to understand clearly what he said. I said 'I m sorry'..He told me same sentence again. In that shocking and joyous moment :), i came out of the embassy. Thatz how i achieved my dream of MS in US ........

Comments: VO didn't asked about my sponsors or my financial status. Same thing happened in many cases. They just look at the confidence and the way you are answering. Always remember that a decent smile on your face can elevate your confidence. After visiting the visa consulate, i came to know that all visa officers always want to give visas. They never want to reject you.

EXPERIENCE 2

Amit's profile: GRE-2030 TOEFL-617 [Old pattern GRE/TOEFL] University: Virginia Tech Stream-IE

Interviewer: please show me your I20.

(amit produces his I20)

Interviewer : what's your GRE score.

Amit: 2030

Inter..: Can I have look at your score sheet please.

(amit submits his GRE score sheet)

Interwiever: You seem to have a good GRE score.

Amit: Thankyou Sir

(Comments- actually amit was quite puzzled as to how the interviewer mentioned as his score to be high. But the matter of fact is that these people usually look at the verbal scores and amit had a high verbal score of 680.)

Interviewer : Which univ are you going to ?

Amit: Virginia tech .

interviewer: that's a very tough school. Why did you choose such a tough school?

Amit: Sir , the specialization which I want to pursue in IE is facilities design. and Virginia Tech is supposed to be one of the best schools for this specialization. That's the reason I chose this school.

(comments-One should never just say that the school is high ranked rather you should try and reply the way amit did ie talk more about the course specialization and don't forget to talk some techie stuff so that the interviewer gets the message that you know what you are going to do.)

Inter..:Do you have any financial support from the university?

Amit: No sir.

(Comment: always be straight forward about your aid status. Don't sat that I will get once I go to the university....etc etc.. remember this will always work against you.)

Inter..: Who's your sponsor?

Amit: my parents

Inter..: Do you have any supporting financial documents?

Amit: Yes Sir.

(amit now forwards his CA statement.)

Inter..: Do have anything more concrete than this?

Amit now forwards his bank statement

the interviewer has a look at it and gives it back to him

Interviewer: All the best son. Study well!

Amit was asked to pay his visa fee. which meant that he had got his visa.

Experience 3

VO: How do you plan to finance ur education.. 17K $ is a lot of money

ME: Yes Sir, My parents are sponsoring

VO: UR parents annual income is only 5L .. how can they sponsor u

(this is the trick question.. u get flustered here.. ur done )

ME: Yes Sir, its 5L.. they have saving of ...L and I am taking a bank loan of 12L ( this was more then required.. my total savings and bank.loan was about 1.5 times that required for 2 yrs ))

VO: So what will be ur repayment per month

ME: around 20thousand per month

VO: ( sounds very surprised and says ).. thats a lot of money... how can you repay ( he stares at me.. like i am some criminal ))

ME: ( with the same tone that he used.. ) 20 thousand is not at all a lot of money.. i am very sure of repaying it back. .it shouldnt be a problem at all

VO: Gives me a proper stare...looks right into my eyes

ME: Give him a smile

VO: Go pay ur fees.. i am on seventh heaven

Experience 4

Me: Good morning sir.

VO: Good morning.

VO: Why r u going to US?

Me: Sir I have been working for the past 3 years now. I always wanted to do research and I think this is the best time to pursue my goals as I have the valuable industry experience and good academic background to support me as well.

VO: Hmmm.. but why only this university.

Me: Infact sir I have got admits to other universities as well and....

VO: Which are the other universities.

ME: (I told him the list)

VO: Ok. So whats special about this university U R going to?

Me: Sir, I have interacted with quite a few graduate students at all the universities and I realize that this university I am going to has state of the art research facilities.

VO: Ok. So who is going to sponser ur education.

Me: My parents sir.

VO: Whats ur dad's annual income.

I thot he said family....

Me: Sir X Lakhs.

VO: Thats ur dad's income?

Me: Oh No sir. Thats my parents income. My dad's

income is YLakhs/PA.

He gives me a stare. Looks at me in disbelief.

Looks thru my papers....

Me: I point out the various documents in proof of Y lakhs/PA.

VO: Where is ur bank transaction statement.

Me: I show him the printout which has the transactions.

Finds a letter which states that I work for Tata Infotech Limited.

VO: Oh. U work for Tata's?

Me: Yes sir. For the past 3 years.

VO: So Tatas is sponsoring ur education?

Me: No sir. Tata's dont sponser higher education.

VO: But Tata's are very very rich.

Me: (just laughed).

Just passes all the documents below the window and says go and pay the visa fees at the counter

1] He [counsellor] asked me about my dad's annual income i told him he is earning about X lakhs per annum ... then he asked me that how much he will be providing you in that X lakhs.. i told him that he will be providing me X-1 lakhs for my education.

2] counsellor after seeing my I20 where it is mentioned my course duration as 3years including 1 year as grace . he kept hanging to it saying that my course duration is 3 years and u dont have sufficient funds to pay for it . i told him that only 2 years is the course duration and 1 year is grace he not even tried to listen my words. so any one going for counselling keep that in mind what to answer if this question is being posed to you.
