Pringles Can Binoculars Craft for Preschoolers

by happyhooligans @ Happy Hooligans

Here's a really fun and easy craft for your preschoolers to make this week.

We took a couple of Pringles cans, and turned them into binoculars!

These are so much better than your regular toilet paper roll binoculars.

For starters, they're very sturdy, so they're easy for little hands to hold, and they'll stand up to lots and lots of play.

Secondly, they're nice and big, so you get a nice, big view of everything.

And thirdly, because we left the lids on, when you look through these binoculars, you get the sense that you're looking through actual lenses.

Oh, and they were a whole lot of fun to decorate too!

Great for scavenger hunts, pretend play, I Spy etc...

Classic Vietnamese Spring Rolls

Classic Vietnamese Spring Rolls

Cookstr.com

In Vietnam, deep-fried spring rolls are mostly market and restaurant food. They can be made small or long, but either way, they’re eaten in the hand, wrapped in a lettuce leaf with some fresh herbs, served occasionally with vinegared carrots and cold cooked rice noodles. You can assemble the rolls several hours ahead and refrigerate until you are ready to deep-fry. Once fried and drained on paper towels, they can be reheated in the oven or in hot oil. Use either small round rice paper wrappers or wedge-shaped wrappers if you can. We like Red Rose brand best. If you can only find large wrappers, you will be making longer rolls, and fewer of them.

We Could Watch These Italian Nonnas Make Pasta All Day

We Could Watch These Italian Nonnas Make Pasta All Day

by Valerio Farris @ Food52

Every Thursday afternoon, Vicky Bennison gifts the internet when she uploads a video to her Youtube account Pasta Grannies. Each installment documents an Italian nonna, or grandma, rolling and kneading, pressing dough into familiar, and sometimes unfamiliar, shapes. They stretch out serpents of semolina for cutting into cavatelli or pleat squares into tortelloni, an edible origami plump with filling. Bennison has dubbed these women the Pasta Grannies.

Her videos are, in essence, an archival project. They capture a practice on its way out, declining due to an increasing, almost total, reliance on industrial means of production. These are skills that, for centuries, have been the stuff of generational inheritance. Until now, that is: In many cases, the women she records are the last living possessors of a certain pasta finesse.

Bennison was researching a book on Italian food when the idea struck her. “I felt there was space in the food firmament to celebrate old ladies who cook out of love for their family. Everyone says their grandmother’s cooking is the best, but we never see them,” she said over email. She splits her time between Le Marche (on the Adriatic side of Italy’s boot) and London.

She finds most of the pasta grannies by word of mouth, a glutinous whisper network that, for her, is all about who you know. “I work with a woman called Livia de Giovanni who I call my Granny Finder; it really takes an Italian to persuade very shy, elderly women to cook for us. It’s a case of 'Oh well, if you’re a friend of my daughter, I guess it’s okay’ kind of thing.'”

Because of the project’s historical bent, Bennison is often working with an agenda. She identifies a specific type of pasta—Sardinian filindeu or scarpinocc from Lombardy—and sets her sight on a woman who can bring it to life. The videos are simple, but informative. They often take place in a homekitchen; the women toggle between concentration and levity, they dip fingers into bubbling sauces and smile as they present their final dishes. In one video, Mariella, from Rome, prepares gnocchi with a Roman pork short rib sauce. She grasps the bowl, her finished dish, and beams into the camera: “Your gnocchi are ready. I hope you will enjoy them.” I don’t see why not.

Do you have a pasta making nonna in your life? Tell us about her specialty in the comments section.

Homemade Soft Pretzels Recipe – Easy and Delicious

Soft homemade pretzels are one of those things that everybody loves but no-one ever makes, right?

Well, I have a little secret to share with you.

They're SUPER-easy to make at home!

Seriously!

They're really fun too - especially if you have little kids in the house because, hey, the kneading and rolling and shaping is kind of like playing with play dough!

Use your dough to make traditional pretzel shapes or pretzel numbers or letters.

Top with your favourite pretzel toppings, and boom, you've got yourself a delicious, soft, chewy homemade snack for after school or whenever.

And... they're so easy, your kids can pretty much make them themselves.

Check out the link below to how see "Miss Mess" (9 years old) whipped up this batch for us last week.

Bread Machine Cinnamon Rolls – Easy, To-Die-For Recipe

by happyhooligans @ Happy Hooligans

So, I have this amazing cinnamon roll recipe.

You make the dough in your bread machine which makes the process so easy.

The part you do by hand is actually really fun and cool, AND...

They are the BEST cinnamon buns ever.

Here's the funny part though - when I made these the last time, I didn't use a big enough baking dish, and my cinnamon rolls rose UP as well as OUT.

They tasted delicious, as usual, but the results were quite comical.

I shared a photo on my facebook page, and people went nuts for it, saying they looked like Dr. Seuss cinnamon rolls, and suggesting that I make them this way for Christmas, dusting them with icing sugar, so they look like Christmas trees, OR colouring the frosting orange to make them look like candy-corn for Halloween.

Anyway, I thought you'd like to know that I wrote a post about them, and included the wacky pictures.

Check them out, and MAKE THEM! They are SO crazy-good. You'll never buy store-bought cinnamon rolls again.

Just use the right size of baking dish if you don't want the Suessical version. HA!
